Subject: New Detonators 12.81 makes Vue (4.01, 4.02) Freeze in OpenGL views

I noticed that since I changed my GeForce2 drivers from 12.41 to 12.81 Vue makes win2k freeze when I go to any OpenGL views (flat or smooth shaded). This happens only in Vue and since I got the 12.81, and I checked if the new 4.02 update might fix it but no such luck...it freezes! :( Maybe someone else noticed the same problem, I run LightWave and also WorldBuilder 3 Pro among other 3d softwares and they all seem to work great with the new drivers. Let me know if someone has the same bug. Cheers!

I had terrible performance with my GeForce2 under winMe using Vue 4 and OpenGL, so I had to turn that option off. Just by curiosity, I turned it back on (I also have the latest version of the drivers) and for windows me too, Vue freezes. Incidentally, I also had to reboot my machine since Vue took the system with it :) So... back to the plain old wire frame display...

"OpenGL shows strange colors/artefacts; program crashes just after starting: This is caused by a faulty OpenGL driver. You can solve the problem by disabling OpenGL (select menu File | Options and uncheck Use OpenGL ). If you'd rather use OpenGL, check the website of your video board manufacturer for a driver upgrade. Please note that your video board may work fine with other applications but not in Vue, because these applications are not multi-threaded. If you cannot get hold of a driver that corrects the problem, follow the steps of the "Program Crashes Randomly" troubleshoot in the User Manual. Alternately, you can search for the OpenGL part of your video board driver (usually opengl something, or ogl something dll's) and get rid of it, so that Windows will use the default OpenGL32.dll dll instead. The only currently known issue is with the latest GeForce 3 based video boards. The driver doesn't support multithreaded drawing. You should uncheck the "Use background draw thread" option in the Options dialog to fix the problem." -------------------------------------------------- It's looks like the same type of problem, even though it's a Geforce 2, not a Geforce 3. -SMT

Ahem, this is the official nVidia driver and to date it is about the best one that we ever saw for the GeForce2/3. And about multithread, I use mostly apps that do support multithread such as LightWave. :) I don't think that it's a faulty OpenGL driver or even a faulty video card driver since I use highly intensive OpenGL apps on a daily basis and it only bugs in Vue. There is definately an incompatibility between Vue and the drivers and we should look at E-on and Nvidia to work things out. I have used Vue with the 12.41 on WinXP RC1, RC2 and now back to Win2k and it works flawlessly. Cheers!

I am having problems with the opengl also. I am using a proffesional opengl card the Quadro, and have no problems in other opengl programs. Griggs

Glad to see that most GeForce.x users experience the same...what drivers are you all using? I know that the 12.40 and 12.41 in both win2k and WinXP RC1 and RC2 were all working great but god were they slow! :) Cheers!

Oh no I have a sinking feeling. Just about to build a dual 1GHz PII W2K PC and I bought the latest Gainward Geforce3 board to really beef up Vue performance. Ho hum. We'll see how it goes. For those with problems: before installing the new driver, did you disable all those accursed background tasks like personal firewalls, virus checkers, whizzy taskbar programs? This has caused me problems in the past especially with graphics programs and drivers. Just a thought. Mark

Mark, I installed the drivers on a fresh install of win2k to give you an idea. :) As I said earlier all my other applications runs like a charm so this wouldn't happen if the drivers were corrupted...especially in LightWave. :) Cheers!

Actually I had the same problems with my ELSA Synergy II-OpenGL board. There seems to be a major fault in the OpenGL-implementation of Vue d'Esprit. (And I did update my drivers to the latest version, and, yes, it does work quite well with other programms like 3D Max and Nendo.) Joerg

I guess I will use wireframe mode for now because everything is awesome...I can now rotate a LWO model of 250 000 polys with the same speed as with a 150 000 one with the 12.40. :) I am looking into an ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce3 or even a FireGL card though...the GeForce2 doesn't cut it anymore. Hah, me too. For Vue I changed my old Matrox for a Elsa Gladiac-Ultra. Now Im running the latest nvidia reference driver. But I cant enable the backdraw function. All others apps worked fine, exept vue. Im glad to hear that a lot people have the same problem and maybe vue will fix it, cause the programm will run poorly slow without the backdraw feature. Niko
