Subject: I need help with Matmatic

A little exposition first. I'm terrible with textures. So much so that I usually just give my models a diffuse color and that's it. I feel fine with doing that with freebies, but it's really not a practice I want to continue , especially if I ever start selling as a vendor. Besides most of the time the color is just flat. Now, I think a shader would be better, so I'm trying to learn matmatic so I can do that.

So...

  1. I know I've see Baggnsbill do shaders that have stripes and sequins, so my question is, can Matmatic do plaid shaders as well? And just how would one go about doing it?

  2. Are nodes for the material room created through scripting or is there some button or submenu somewhere that I can't find that creates them?

  3. Is there a good and FREE text editor for the Mac that work's okay for scripting python?

(Edit)4. Also, I can't seem to download Bagginsbill's sequins shader. Anybody know if that is still available?

Yes, BB has done plaids through Matmatic and there does exist the mm1 file for producing them.  Not at my computer so I can't check properly. 

Creating those nodes is simply running the script separately, unfortunately no buttons.

IIRC, the sequins is still up at his site.  Haven't tried recently though.

Im the same, by the time i get to the texturing I want to move onto something else so do a quick material that will make do

This isnt plaid but a fairly quick simple gingham using procedules, just change the tile size and colour to suit and you can add an extra colour by adding a mortar fill

TextWrangler will do nicely. If you save the file with the ending .py it will display the code in different colours to help you see what is what. I've also edited all kinds of Poser files with it.

Hborre, I'm having a hard time understanding running the script.  Or rather which script to run. I know what a compiler is, but unless it has something to compile it's not much use.

I had to review the instructions for compiling the files associated with matmatic.  I am reviewing the older version at the moment because I believe I haven't installed the latest.  The script is run from the compile.py which creates all the different material files.  However, the mm1 files must be in a specific location, Libraries>materials>MatmaticDemos, for the script to work.  The location can be edited within the script.

Unless something has changed dramatically with the newer version, this is the instructions I have.

Here is an old page I put together long ago showing some more Loom results.

Notice the fuzz. That is very important for getting the look of cloth - it isn't just about the color pattern.

Here's a question for you BB. What are your restrictions on using the shaders, if any? I ask because I don't remember seeing a  read me file with any of the shaders you give out. I'm giving out freebies for now, some with Textures, some without, but frankly, I think I'd rather use shaders, like your Sequins shader. So what's your redistribution policy on using your shaders?

When I post an actual shader (either screen shot or material file) as an attachment in a forum, it means you can do anything you want with that so long as it is sold or given away as part of a prop or figure. In other words, don't collect postings in Rendo and sell them as material sets. You can make a dress and sell the dress, which happens to have shaders you learned or found in Rendo or RDNA forums. I like to see people include a link to where you got it in the product or freebie's ReadMe file.

When I link you to free shaders on my site, such as the sequins, you have to ask for permission. But in almost all cases, I apply the same rule. If you want to sell that dress, or give it away, and you want to include my sequins shaders or any derivatives you may create (such as making your own color choices), consider this permission to do so. Please include a link to the site where you got it (or the basis for what you made).

If you make shaders from matmatic scripts I've published over time (free ones in forums or those included in matmatic such as the Loom), those shaders belong to you, even though I gave you the code to make them. The resulting material files are yours to do with as you please and you don't have to talk to me or even credit me.
