It really is a shame that people steal your work, and I sympathize. I'm sure you go through the rationalization process, "most of the people who download the warez wouldn't have paid for it regardless so it isn't really money out of my pocket" etc. Still, in the end it feels like you've been robbed, in broad daylight, by a rabid pack of spoiled children.
Sharen - "warez" is the general slang for pirated/unlicensed/unpaid-for copies of software, 3d models etc. which you can download on the net. Any code or content creator lose sales to warez, from the big firms who create Maya and 3DS, to the one-man-shows like PhilC, who make Poser stuff. It's an open question how MUCH sales they lose, but Phil's making a living making great stuff for the rest of us. That's plenty of enlightened-selfishness reason to support the fight against warez.
How do you know if warez is taking stuff and making money off of it, accidentally finding it or is there a particular person or corp doing it? And yes, I definately would fight against them, but how do you find them or go about it? What a shame for PhilC, you do really have lovely stuff and are great to share it with us. I will fight with you, what do I do? Sharen
sigh A long time ago I stopped trying to figure people out, it just makes my head hurt to think how people can justify it... even if you use the "Well they wouldn't have paid for it anyway if it weren't free", it doesn't make sense... if they weren't going to pay for it, then they shouldn't get to HAVE it! I haven't personally bought any of PhilC's stuff, but I look at everything he does put out, and I think I've downloaded every freebie he's ever put out, and I think it's a shame that someone would do something like this... I guess what I don't get more than anything though, is wouldn't SOMEONE have to have paid for it at some point to get the original files? And if so, WHY would that person just give it away... (shaking head). I actually just posted a question in the store forum to make sure that I wouldn't accidently be doing something illegal in regards to someone making a purchase for me, and my question was answered, and I know that it'll be okay the way that it will end up being done, but I'm very careful about stuff like that, you never know when you're going to be crossing the line, but to do it deliberatly kind of bugs me... oh well... yet more proof that I'm better of not liking most people until they give me a reason to. K- PS - I know I ranted a bit, but I do feel bad for all of you hard working people who get your stuff ripped off... that's part of the reason I try to always credit the model/texture makers in all of my images, unless it's late, and I forget, then it's not my fault! ;)
OK, I am apalled- I read these posts, and did a quick search, and found multiple sites where I could download expensive software like Photoshop 6! Here I am being a sucker, using my legal copy of Photoshop LE instead. Seriously though, does anyone shut these places down? I am sure that it would be a full time job for the companies. But if it was this easy to find, they need to employ people just to search the web for these infractions. I emailed Adobe the link that I found. It will be interesting to see how long it remains. Well, Phil, at least you made some money from me. Your stuff is first rate! If we were to steal it, you might not make any more, and that would be a shame. So let's all keep paying for stuff- the prices aren't that bad, and the authors deserve compensation for their hard work.
i doubt that companies really go after these people. its like the whole mp3 thing, people think that since it costs money, theyre entitled to it for free if they can find it. i cant imagine someone having balls enough to actually have a page and be responsible for dishin out thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stuff
The problem with going after sofware pirates in Canada, is you or the company can only sue for the value of the product. So if some one had a priated copy of my Jiu-Jitsue Set 2, since I only charge $10. I can only bring it to a civil court for $10. An hour of my time is worth more than that. I believe if you want to stop pirating the way to do it is to attack the distributor. Then you may beable to sue based on sales projections because they are distributing and not just in posesion. (Still not much.) So if you want to hurt a softwre pirate, you would have to start a class action suite on every one's behalf that he is pirating software from. Then you might be able to sue for some good money, Enough to hurt the software pirate. Even then the person hiring the lawyer and doing all the admin work would probably have to invest to much time. One thing to consider though, often a letter warning you will take legal action, is enough to straigten most people out. I am sorry to see that your works are being pirated. Best of luck. Deimos.
Gee, I've bought half that stuff! Those pirates must have good taste. ::sad grin:: They didn't even change the names, even the misspelled ones. They seem to be going for the best: Thorne's fairies, Anton's clothes, your Arabian and Knight sets. Nothing from DAZ? They mght be nervous about stealing from a company with lawyers on hand. There was an update to Anton's 18th century clothes? Anyway, those of us who respect ourselves as well as our colleagues won't buy from pirates. Period. Carolly
On some level it is flattering. But what most of these Warezers don't realize is that some of us have networks of people who look for our stuff across the web. These people know that they are doing wrong. What is sad is when you get a copy of their email contacts and see names of people you know. These sites do die quickly these days since most warez boards are staying clear of Poser files. We are too vigilant for them. Everyone is subject to warez. And they can appear quickly. Someone told me last night that they shut down a site with Willow's Olympian Map Set just released at Daz a few days ago. It's crazy, but not fruitless. There is justice for this type of crime. For example I know of 5 people who have been fired from their jobs for hosting my stuff on company servers. And Bbay is like a pitbull when it comes to that stuff. We do our best to protect ourselves and our customers. Any info can always be emailed to me or to Daz. I offer rewards for proof of Warez activity. -Anton When Merrilyn remapped the 18th century couple we include the new unfolded mapping. This person renamed alot of thos zips.

Hi, I'm probably going to get shouted at for this, but... Personally, (and I've been using computers for 20+ years) I've never encountered anyone (within the "scene") that made money from warez. I've seen some people selling what were obviously pirate games over the years, but they were obviously not you're average computer "nerds" and got more than a little threatening if you asked too many questions... But "warez" sites? Nah! nobody makes a profit, it's not done to make a profit, it's done for the kudos of having the best "selection" of stuff to download, as well as the prestige of "zero day warez" (having a cracked version of a game/app to download on, or before, the day it hits the shops) I can appreciate that you'd be pissed off about losing potential sales, etc. but "warez" is never done "for profit" what you are talking about is simply theft, not warez, because paying for it is anathema to most "warez doodz" Just my 2 cents... later jb

You will be "pleased" to know that Renderosity Store items are again appearing in the warez channels. Something of a shame since I and many others also give away so much for free. It wont stop me from continuing to do so. Just kinda sad.
It's my understanding that muuru has been banned from this and a few other sites. I expect they have logged in again with another name.
Its up to you if you search out the locations and download.
