Subject: Guns for Poser?

Gator762 ( ) posted Mon, 15 April 2013 at 6:56 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 5:11 PM

I haven't found much here or elsewhere, except for a thread a few years old.  Is there a place for good, modern tactical semi auto pistols and military rifles?

I did find a great 1911 at sharecg.com, and found FoRender.com that has pretty good modern rifles.  I bought one and like it, but they run $7-10 a pop.  Panko has some weapon packs, but older mostly Vietnam war era weapons.

Not knowing exactly what you want, I suggest searching the Freestuff here.  Just be sure to use more than two varitions for the search (not just "gun" and "weapon," but also things like "tactical" for example).

Sarch for Porsimo, he has some nice free guns.  Also, Forender has a real nice pistol thats free, not sure if you saw that?  OnTarget3d has some old guns in the freebie section

Motokamishishii's guns are fully articulated replica's, from what I gather one of the best you can find for realism and detail for Poser, looks like mostly pistol replica's though.

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?vendor=342356

For larger caliber weaponry and auto rifles, FoRender is the bomb... The gun models are just magnificent ( I have one of FoRenders Ak-74's and for a gun it's a thing of beauty). Highly recommended. $7-12 for quality models is a bargain, How many different types of guns do you need?

I looked at Motokamishi's stuff, and it does look very good.  I may pick up a pistol or two from him.

Lots of the stuff at FoRender is what I'm looking for - SCAR-16 & SCAR-17, M4 plain & tacticool, MP5, Steyr AUG, Vector, G36, P90, etc...  I picked up FoRender's Magpul Masada (ACR) which is very good.  Possibly pick up an AK-47 & 74 too.  Modern & not so modern.

I wish there was some kinda package deal like Panko does...  Does he ever do sales?

Another good source is

http://www.ontarget3d.com/site/

They have lots of weapons, military vehicles, military barracks and a variety of non-military scenes and settings.  Some free, some fairly cheap.

He does a 35% off sale end of every month, if you get his newsletter.

Nice!  I'll have to log in to see if I signed up for it.  I did register and buy one of his guns (the Masada).

Good to know...  I saw his stuff at ontarget3d.  It looks like he does mostly up to 80's era weapons, including lots of US Vietnam War era stuff.  Does he do more modern rifles like I posted above?

estherau ( ) posted Tue, 16 April 2013 at 9:09 AM

I think many of his guns are still in use today. I love the poses too, and then if you do have a weapon from somewhere else you can still kind of modify the poses.  But I love the detail in his weapons.  the real bullets and gun sights etc.

Love esther

Don't get me wrong, I like old-school stuff like AK-47's, M-16 A1's, Colt Commandos, HK G3 and stuff, but for the moment, I'm looking for modern tacticool rifles and to a lesser extent pistols.

philebus ( ) posted Tue, 16 April 2013 at 4:11 PM

I've bought stuff from here before...

They have a fairly good range of old, new, and sci-fi weapons

Yeah, Panko, FoRender (formerly WarTech), and Motokamishi really do make the best weapon models, but they can be pricey -- and Panko's stuff hardly ever seems to go on sale.

Good contemporary pistols and rifles can be difficult to find for free, and by far, most of the ones I have I had to pay for.

Try this:

There are a few modern pistols and rifles (and a bunch of other stuff) here. They're older models, but they still look pretty good, and hey -- they're free.

Like that Baphomet avatar Sarsifus...

Here's a preview and wireframe of that FoRender Kalashnikov I was mentioning earlier. Actually not the more detailed side of the model.

If you stop to think about it this is actually a kind of creepy thread, like the Poser Militia or somethin'.

Thanks -- it's by an erotic sci-fi/fantasy artist named Azpiri.

There's nothing wrong with wanting the best quality anything you can get, and 3D content is no different. I want my weapons props to LOOK like real weapons; I want my cars to LOOK like real cars; and so on, and so forth. The problem here is that there really aren't that many that are high-quality AND free. You get what you pay for, man -- quality costs.

primorge ( ) posted Wed, 17 April 2013 at 10:50 AM

Hmmm, yeah. Familiar with Azpiri from HM magazine.

Shrugs, I would have never known.

BTW, Sarsifus... you might want to consider creating your own avatar or utilizing a work that is in the public domain. Probably in bad form to appropriate an artist's copyrighted imagery for public use.

Yeah, I hear ya, quality costs.  I signed up for the newsletter, so hopefully I'll see the 35% discount at the end of the month - then I can buy a bunch of stuff on my wishlist.  I got the MP5, to have a subgun in addition to the rifle and pistols.  Plus, I've always liked MP5s.  😄

Wow, the images on his site don't really do them justice.  I guess his intent was to stylize it, but IMHO they looked better rendered.  After grabbing the Masada, and seeing this, I picked up the MP5A5.

I got the newsletter, with the 35% promotion code - and ordered quite a lot.  😄

So far, the quality for everything has been very good.  Not good enough for a hi-res weapon only closeup, but high enough quality for a closeup of someone holding them, which is what I'm looking for.  Pictured is the MP5A5 minus the grenade launcher and 2nd optic.

seem to remember that DAZ3d had some old gun sets in a 15-page freebie section. Once was mentioned here, in threads. Not sure what the web addy is, tho. There was all sorts; western pistols, sci-fi guns, even holsters...

I think DAZ finally dumped its old Freebies list, but there is still at least one nice gun in the new Freebies.

I think I got the same AK-74, but yours looks much better.  Did you buy it a long time ago?

For mine, the bump & displacement values are WAY too high, like maybe he used a script and ripped through all the objects with it.  The values were .03 for bump and .02 for displacement for everything.  It makes the stock look like someone forgot to shellac it and left it out in the rain for 50 years, and the gun makes old 1800's cast iron look smooth.

I've gone through and changed the bump & displacement values and it looks better.  Do you mind checking the values on your AK-74?

primorge ( ) posted Fri, 17 May 2013 at 10:14 PM

it's a preview render with no bump or displacement. Never underestimate the poor, neglected preview renderer (which is getting a welcome update in poser 10 btw) in combination with some very minor post-work in photoshop. I'm always mystified why people slog through IDL renders for simple little forum posts, unless the image needs all of the shaders and accoutrements of rendered lighting to demonstrate something. Anyway I'll take a look at the settings in the mat room on that AK, but if I remember correctly the settings were kind of out there.
