Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)

Subject: Are we likely to get a new version of Poser in the next year or so?

strongbear ( ) posted Sat, 20 April 2013 at 8:26 AM · edited Sun, 10 November 2024 at 6:27 PM

Not sure if this has been asked before, so excuse me if it has. It seems that a new version of Poser is released every 2 years, sometimes less. Poser Pro 2012 came out in September 2011.

Is there any news or rumours about a new version of Poser (maybe Poser Pro 2014 perhaps)? I was just looking into the SR3 of Poser Pro 2012 but wondered whether I should bother with that. Wouldn't a new version of Poser incorporate everything in that service release and have fixed any issues with it?

Also, I'm guessing that Reality 3 would naturally be compatible with a new version of Poser too?

So should I wait for a new version rather than bothering with SR3, since it's already nearly mid 2013?

Alternatively, if someone (not me obviously) were to invest in a Poser program for the first time, but wasn't in a hurry, would you advise them to wait for a new release since it might be just around the corner?

I'm not on the beta team but I think it's already in testing....has to be, as a new version is likely to be released in the fall, if one is to go by previous release schedules.

ALWAYS install the service packs. Many of the latest products do not work without them.

As to the next release,  I personally expect it this fall. As you say... Smith Micro seems to update it about every other year.

Never be in a hurry, but always wait for a sale. There are some (US) holidays coming up and you'll often get Poser for a great price, but perhaps the best sales have already been, who knows. As a new buyer I would always wait for a sale. Next version or this one? All I know is that we have 9 and Pro2012 and what happens next none of us, except those who can't tell us, don't know. Will it be even worth waiting for, who knows?

At the risk of sounding like a shill for Smith Micro...

I have yet to see a version of Poser that was not worth the upgrade price (and I started with Poser 6.) Each release raises the bar, speeds the process and improves productivity. The only reason I can possibly see for people staying with older versions is financial. If you can't afford it, hey. We've all been there. But if you can, the advancing technology has always seemed like a good investment to me.

But then, I use Poser on a daily basis.

My $.02

Well definitely Poser 2010 to Poser 2012 has many improvements. Even just the layout of 2012 is far better, especially with the ability to have a floating or non-floating window. Too many other things to list off the top of my head.

I started with Poser 4 then eventually went to Poser 5 (which I think was the first one to have these different rooms). That seemed like a jump at the time, but both of those now seem really primitive. Well, even Poser 8 seems rather primitive but acceptable.

Indeed.  And no cryptic hints from Bagginsbill yet...

lol yeah that sounds familiar

I didn't upgrade from 7 to 8 and jumped from 7 to pp12 and when i did it was mind blowing. However I have to realise that this is just a play thing to me and i dont make any money from this hobby so have to keep it into perspective.  :( so probably wont upgrade as i said unless something super dooper that i cant live without or cant function comes along. or maybe down the line i can get a cheap deal somewhere rather than wait for the first day of release like most of us do.

Generally, I think it's safe to say that by the time a release gets to SR3 it actually works as expected. The next new version, on the other hand, might be buggy as hell for a while after it first comes out, particularly if it introduces a lot of new features. Beta testing just doesn't catch everything.

I'd say you tend to have a smoother ride using a mature release, rather than hoping the new release will work properly from day one.

I wouldn't assume that. If the new version of Poser introduces many new features, the developers of any add-ons may have to update their software to match, and that could take a while before everything works properly together.

I hear ya. I'm delaying a $500 upgrade to Modo701 because I also need a whole new machine to run it on. PTWANG indeed!

No next poser here..... I'm not rendering in Poser anymore, all I do is pose my figures, select my props and import the scene into Vue to compose it further and render it. For that purpose, Poser 9/2012 is more then adequate. Unless Poser X changes posing as we know it dramatically.

Well one thing they really need to change is the way dynamic cloth behaves. I saw on another thread how some other program allowed dynamic cloth to adjust itself (don't want to use the word "conform" for obvious reasons) to the figure so that if you changed the pose slightly, you didn't have to go and simulate the cloth all over again which can be a real pain.

My 2 cents, is get the update. Sinces there has't been any rumors, it'll probably be several months, at least before they have anything. Why wait and deal with the problems that were fixes iwhen the update is free? And who knows maybe Poser'll get get bought out by Daz, or Corel, or some other company we don't want to own it and you won't want the next version. Isn't Poser also due to change hands again? Seems like every couple of versions that happens too.

As far as getting poser for the first time, wait until the end of May. Memorial day is coming and most places usually have sales. And then there will be a discount on the upgrade to the next version, when ever that will be.

I'm pretty happy with PP12 right now. I will probably have to wait anyway because of funds. Oh well. I guess I will see what others do with the new version for awhile.

Get SR3.1 if you do not have it already.

Poser 9 or Poser Pro 2012 with SR3.1 are rock steady and solved a LOT of little things.

As for a next release?
