I'm dying of curiosity.

Who is the "person who created the original Victoria and Michael models? Not to mention all the subsequent versions and spin-offs, as well as countless head and body morphs, both realistic and fantastical, and more?"

Was it one person?  Are they still working for DAZ?  (Does Genesis 2 count as a "spin-off"?)

LaurieA ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 7:18 AM

Something tells me they do NOT work for Daz anymore ;). But I really have no idea. LOL

E-on got the same spam from the Marketing guy from DAZ3D.  Steve something.  Forgot his name already.  At first I thought DAZ was announcing Studio 5 today.

So this is a new DAZ product?

Not Victoria 6, I assume, or Genesis 2, since those do not work natively in Poser.

Kondris?

If it's a V6 clone it sure doesn't look like it from what I can see of the face.

From the wording of the original thread I'm not gonna say it sounds anti-Daz, but maybe anti-Daz corporate entity. LOL Maybe I'm just reading into it ;).

I suppose anything's possible, but I have my doubts ;) I don't think this is like a Daz-3D/Zygote split thing.

Well, I checked the domain names using a WhoIs search.  The owner of Hivewire3d.com is Eric Merritt of Lehi, UT.

DAZ3d.com is owned by DAZ, of Draper, UT.  Judging from this, I'm guessing Shawn is mistaken, and this did not come from DAZ marketing.

Or maybe he thought this was a V6/Genesis 2 thread?

Yep.  e-on deleted the thread as spam.  His post was kind of creepy malware looking though.  :)  He couldn't just say "Vicky 6 is out"?  Hell's Facebook is being all secret about what he already announced about V6 on DAZ3D.  Their marketing of V6 is all out of whack at the starting gate.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 8:40 AM

This thread is not about V6.  Did you click the link?  It goes to a post in the Rosity Freestuff section.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 8:48 AM

The link is the mysterious free thing that is being spammed everywhere.  Did Steve quit DAZ3D and start another site?  Is this spam to get us to look at DAZ3D's site for new announcements?  It got me to look.  I haven't been over there in a year.  I'll be surpised if this mysterious figure, with the same features as V6, is actually free.

randym77 ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 8:55 AM

So Steve Kondris is the one who sent this out?

Interesting.  It obviously is one or more people who used to work for DAZ, or still do, since they claim to be the ones who created Mike and Vicky.

The question is...do they still work for DAZ (this is some kind of guerilla marketing technique), or have they created their own company to compete with their former employers?

I have not heard Steve Kondris' name in ages, and I had assumed that he left DAZ.  His linked in profile suggests that is true.

http://www.linkedin.com/pub/steve-kondris/0/b09/6a5

DAZ is listed as a past employer.

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2013 at 9:00 AM

Someone tell Steve Kondris about Kickstarter so he isn't spamming his mystery messages on every CG forum.  That is so 2000 marketing.

And obviously not very effective, if what it did was prompt you to go to DAZ to see what's up.  :-)

FWIW, Steve (or whoever it is) has posted some replies in the Freestuff thread.  He says the new free figure will have separate DS and Poser versions, and compatibility with previous generations will be through some kind of conversion utility.

If it works natively in both Studio and Poser, it's likely not weightmapped...

It says it IS weight-mapped.  There will be separate DS and Poser versions.

A lot of DAZ people left around the time they rolled out Genesis and the new store, so maybe there's several of 'em in on this new venture.

Lots more info has been posted in the Freestuff thread.

The new figure's name is Dawn.  (I was just going to guess that - since the thread was called "the Dawn of a new day.")

"HiveWire3D" (the user name) is indeed Steve Kondris.

Quote - HiveWire 3D was founded by Chris Creek, who many of you already know of. Chris first began in the 3D industry at Viewpoint Data Labs in 1991 as the lead anatomy modeler. While there he modeled the Toddler which later became the ridiculously-popular "Dancing Baby" seen in media spots throughout 1996-1998. Chris eventually left Viewpoint to become the President/Co-Founder of Zygote Media Group where he modeled the revolutionary Poser figures: The Dork and Posette. These two figures created a new market and new business opportunity. Upon this realization, Chris and Dan Farr decided to part ways from Zygote and created DAZ 3D where Chris was the Executive Vice President/Co-Founder for nearly a decade. It was there Chris modeled the ground-breaking 3D figures: Victoria and Michael. Prior to devoting his life to 3D and digital content, Chris worked as a freelance artist and painter which at the time allowed him to be home with his wife and three young boys. Now Chris has brought his decades of art and business experience to HiveWire 3D, modeling (among other things) our core female figure, Dawn. Chris finds happiness in being able to create art across a variety of mediums, and 3D is something he's never been able to let go of. But, I've found that for Chris, it's not just about creating great art, it's every bit as much about the joy that his artwork can bring to another. Chris creates out of love and what he creates he loves to share. After Chris left DAZ for the second time in late 2012, he found himself wanting and needing to create again. In the solitude of his home, Chris began a new project, and as it grew from a mere primitive cube into a beautiful new figure, he decided to share it with the 3D community that he still felt very much a part of.

Along side Chris are several others who also have a love and passion for 3D. One key individual is Eric Merritt. A graphic designer since 1988, Eric got his first taste of 3D when he was hired by Viewpoint Datalabs in 1991 to layout their 3D model catalog. It was there that Eric met Chris Creek, and together with another individual they founded Zygote Media Group. Eric eventually made his way over to DAZ 3D where he help design and manage the development for a majority of the user interface that makes up the core software program: DAZ Studio. In addition to this, Eric spearheaded the streamlining of the content download process, the development of tutorials, and more. Eric is also a co-founder of the unique, user-friendly AniMate and AniBlock system, designed and sold by GoFigure. When Eric was approached by Chris to co-found a new company, he jumped at the opportunity.

We have several other artists from within the community that are working together with us to help make this all a reality, and they shall reveal themselves at their own discretion. But we are very excited about the interest that Dawn has been receiving and we hope that we can deliver to everyone's expectations at least somewhat. We do not pretend to think that Dawn will be everything to everyone, but we hope that she can be something enjoyable to many.

And then, last and probably least, is me, Steve Kondris, (the primary author of this "HiveWire3D" user account, btw). I first got into the world of 3D back in 2000 when I joined Zygote Media Group's tech support staff shortly after the release of Michael 1.0. I then followed Chris and Dan to DAZ 3D where I had the opportunity to help in multiple roles over my 11+ years there. I left DAZ and the world of 3D in 2012 for a period as I explored other opportunities with various companies across the country, but when Chris called me up in late May, I found myself very excited at the chance to get back into the world of 3D and am happy to be back.

Together, we are focused on one thing: Doing what we love.

We have no agenda, nor other motive, other than to have the freedom to do what we love without the handicaps of big business mentalities or red-tape. We are a down-to-earth group that is sincere in our desire to do what's right and have fun while doing it.

We hope that we will have something of value to add to this great community, that is full of so many talented artists, and by doing so help provide even more potential for great art to be made by anyone.

KenG, the bird guy, has also joined Hivewire3D.  That's why all his birds are gone from the DAZ store.

I am sure that the impending release of Dawn has nothing to do with the sudden unleashing of genesis 2/Victoria 6.
