Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 29 7:57 am)
PP2012 was the first version I used where I found render DoF to be usable in terms of render time, before that I found it so slow as to be unusable in practice.
On my old machine with PP2010 I got problems on occasion with canceling renders (with separate process being used, but only 4Gb RAM) depending on the scene - I frequently reduced the bucket size to 16 or 8, which did help it respond better.
The difference between P8 and PP2014 is pretty big in terms of render speed and the quality that can be achieved.

Quote - Do ya have it set to render to a separate process? I haven't had any trouble cancelling a render, even one with DOF, when I render to a separate process (check the box in General Preferences).

That function isn't in P8, so no :P

To be honest, Firefly DoF takes a long time and don't look that good.
You are better off using a Z-depth render pass and doing the DoF in post (most use Photoshop but GIMP is free and does it just as well).
It will be loads faster, look better, and you can control the amount of depth blur easily...
ArtBee had some fabulous free tutorials on this.
I don't agree. Since PP2012, Firefly's DoF has been giving me very nice results. Not at all the grainy blur it was in earlier versions. If one have PP2012 or higher, I'd say it's absolutely up to it. It does take quite some time to render, but the result is worth it, IMO.

here's a few examples I've made with Poser's DoF. I think it looks nice...
HOWEVER since the OP has P8, a z-depth render may yield better results.. not sure. I know the render time decreased and made DoF more actually usable in P2012, I can't remember if the actual EFFECT looked as good in Poser 8. Still, if we're talking Poser's ABILITY (in the newer iterations) to do a proper DoF, I'd say it can :)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

It is tho. Been in since at least version 7 :) Check again.
General Preferences/Render tab, under number of threads, Separate Process checkbox.
FWIW, I did this render with DOF, and tho it took awhile, it rendered beautifully.

Quote - Just so happened that I used DOF today and cancelled a few times. :) It came out great but you have to fiddle with Focus Distance and FStop and decent render settings or yeah, it's gonna look bad.
Thank you! Exactly what I needed to hear :)
Yeah, I've done a fair bit of experimenting with DOF, and it actually renders really well and looks fantastic once you know what to do in Poser :)

Does anyone know if they fixed the bug where you CAN'T cancel a render when using depth of field? Because, after 24 hours of not being able to cancel this render, I want to smash Poser 8 against the wall. :P
