Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 28 11:20 am)
I refused to go beyond the V3M3 line. They both used the same maps and I don't do NVITWAS anyway.
Plus I made my own 2600 polygon unimesh1 for background stuff.
mo·nop·o·ly [muh-nop-uh-lee]
noun, plural mo·nop·o·lies.
1. exclusive control of a commodity or service in a particular market,
or a control that makes possible the manipulation of prices
P4 Nude Woman (Posette) and NearMe. I have some animals, mostly dinosaurs, that I bought years ago but have not used much beyond seeing what they looked like and how they posed.
Since you are new, I will mention that some objects are classified as figures also, not just organics and robots. I have a wresling ring by Pandorian, classified as a figure, that I use.
These are not at all "required," but here are the links so you can just look if you want. :)

Whatever is to hand and suitable. I don't do human stuff often but when I do, I rarely use V4 or M4. A3, SP3, V3, M3, V2, M2 tend to be the ones I use most.
Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.
I use Alyson 2 with Blackhearted's Anastasia morph a lot now. She's one of my most used female figures. I'm mainly making dynamic clothes for her at the moment, but I'm intending to convert some of the other stuff in my runtime for her - when I get round to it!
Also planning to use Tyler for Ryan 2 more - when I get round to it! :)
Other than those, my most used figures are M3, A3 and V4. I've started using M4 more now than I used to, but I still prefer M3.
Have to also take into account what your computer will stand and still give you performance you can live with. Anastasia for Alyson 2, Antonia WM, Tyler, now Rex and Roxie, I can load more than two of them before the preview gets too jerky. M4/V4 and any of their morphs and clones, no. Two of them and the prview is just too erratic for me. YMMV. Kids, now Kate 2 and Ben 2, some limitations, but in all, for kid figures, satisfactory. I don't use any monster or fantasy morphs, so no need in me using a figure that supports those. It's a matter of personal taste, what pleases your eye more than what figure is the most used or most popular. Clothing is always a consideration, hard to find for anything non daz. with the daz figures, the problem is the reverse, as in ten thousand pieces of clothing 9999 that you would never use. Finding that last one can be a bit of a problem.
Doric.
The "I" in Doric is Silent.
Even with all the figures that have been created, i still keep coming back to the Mill 2 figures. I have to give a lot of credit to Handspan studio for that. The character morphs Handspan created for vicky2 were truly amazing. They were ahead of their time. Of course Mike 2's attached manhood and incredible versatility in his morphs are so good that I've found it hard to be satisfied with other male figures. And the other figures increased poly counts tended to work against building scenes to much for my liking.
My brain is just a toy box filled with weird things
I use Antonia WM, Alyson 2 ( and Anastasia often) Vicky 4 and am closely watching the new Dawn that is coming next month for women. For men I use Tyler, M4 David and Apollo.
Available on Amazon for the Kindle E-Reader Monster of the North and The Shimmering Mage
Today I break my own personal record for the number of days for being alive.

I use Poser 13 and win 10
Quote - Hi
I am new to poser and have been finding my feet working with Alyson 2. Done some retexturing played with some morfs and added some hair. I am almost ready to dress her however from some comments I have picked up on the forums I have the impression that you guys dont use the built in figures. So I was woundering which ones you use and why? what are the pros and cons of the avalible types (including the built in ones).
Thanks.
Most Poser content creater make stuff for DAZ unimesh 4 characters
,mostly DAZ's Vicky4 stuff .so DAZ's V4 is the most support mesh.
there's plugs to get cloths made for one mesh to fit on another.
If you have Pro 14 might not need the plugs.
Buy far V4 has the most stuff made for her.

Thanks for the replies guys (and gals). you've given me a lot to think about.
I had planed on using poser to make a multi media comic strip (images and animations). My setting is going to be a fantasy realm (trolls, dragons, orcs, elves (not the slutty sort) magic and monsters etc etc).
Primarily I'm going to need 3 male and 3 female human characters (+ horses) to start with. Over time (assuming I keep rolling) that will expand to 6 male and females with 4 dark trolls and 3 elves and an assortment of monsters; goat men, scorpion men, cave trolls, humans (Romans), basilisks demons, vampires, zombies etc etc
The backgrounds and sets I think will probably have to be rendered in a different app. I had thought Lightwave. I want good quality forests, city’s, caves and ruins and to be honest I haven’t seen anything in the shop along those lines that I like so I think I am probably going to have to make those.
Having trawled the store for medieval weapons I found the content on that front a little light on the ground. There isn't enough varity. I can see I'm going to have to make all that sort of stuff too.
I'm going to try and adapt existing clothing to fit my genera or make my own. The armours and clothing I want are fairly specific and need to be grounded in reality. I am thinking Greek, Roman and Persian as a base to work from.
I think I have worked out what NVITWAS stands for and I don’t plan on featuring any of them though there may be an occasional SCVITWAS! After all every female warrior needs at least 1 good quality chain mail bikini. ;)
Thanks
DAZ has the Millennium Horse: http://www.daz3d.com/animals/millennium-horse
You might also want to consider some African or Indian animals, depending on your settings: http://www.daz3d.com/animals/millennium-big-cat
There is also a Safari set: the animals cost 80.00 and the poses 10.00 - the bundle is 100.00.

I'm a die hard V4 and M4 user since most of my renders are fashion-centric and I can make like a billion different textures and morphs for these two figures, not to mention clothing shapes for V4, (one could go broke) and M4 to satisfy my needs I usually rival stuff made in Second Life much to their chargrin since the poly count is much higher and generally looks better over all
About the only figures I don't use at some point or another is Apollo, and Mayadoll. Otherwise I tend to us V4, V3 and M3 the most of all my figures. Of course, it also depends on what story I'm telling. In my web comic Android, i Imainly Used DAZ figures, as they were readily available and fully supported. But in Crickett McGuire, I have opted to use main the Poser figures. (I really got to get back to that story).
I am currently using a lot Roxie and Rex.

I've got a soft spot for Apollo (an older free figure who has aged very well), and if you're looking for Roman Uniforms Adh3d has some of the best that I've seen, and they're for Apollo.
Apollo is remarkably versatile, and even comes with a wealth of texture options.

You mentioned forest settings, these are two of my favorites. The second of the two options is a resource hog. If you go to the artists store, you can purchase individual portions of the forest outside of the bundle.

In terms of fantasy figures, you're really not going to do any better than Daz's Genesis, which comes free with Daz Studio, which is also free. You can use Genesis in newer versions of Poser, but it does work better natively in it's own application. You can see a selection of the fantasy characters available for genesis made by one particular artist here: http://www.daz3d.com/rawart
Valandar has a nice selection of weapons: http://www.daz3d.com/valandar?cat=1120
As does Merlin: http://www.daz3d.com/merlin-studios
Swidhelm also has a nice armory on clearance: http://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?vendor=Swidhelm if you check out his store there's some great armor, trees, dragons, etc.
xurge3d.com is also a perennial favorite amongst fantasy artists.
