Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
There are poseable ropes out there. With EasyPose tecxhnology. Your best bet would be to look over at Renderotica, but look here in free stuff too, there might be one still (I know I got some from here)
A rope is something that is very easy to model and rig but really needs EasyPose to work best. But basically it's just a lot of bits in a long thin cylinder all children of each other (look at how the snake is rigged and it'll give you an idea)
You can download one of my free chains and see how they're rigged, too :) The principle is the same, only a chain is more rigid of course.

There are some freebie ropes and chains out there, some of them very long indeed. Check ShareCG if you don't find what you're looking for in Free Stuff here.
The problem I've run into is that it's not easy to pose ropes, even with EasyPose. Also, a long rope is a memory hog like you would not believe.
Thank you very much for the assistance. I suspect Easypose may be best for my purposes. Sadly, even the 20ft rope only has around 100 segments. I shall contact the author ask if he has one with more.
I appreciate TrekkieGrrrl's reminder that rope is "very easy to model and rig". Sadly, I lack the skill and knowledge. Even the 'setup room' fills me with horror and confusion.
Phil's 'AllTiedUp' looks alot of fun to use, but rather more powerful than I currently need.
randym77's referred to the general difficulty of posing rope. I agree; and made harder if the rope is to be tightened and tied - in an animation.
Thank you all, again.
You can place a second 100 segment rope at the end of the first one and parent it to the last segment, and so on. 4 of those ropes will give you 400 segments.
Make sure you parent the 2nd rope FIGURE to the last segment BODY PART of the 1st rope!
The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
Hehe I've never managed to rig ANYTHING in the Setup Room. I just don't get the idea of those bone things. But the hierachy editor (or PHI Builder actually) makes it easy.. just list all the groups in the hierachy and voila.. a Poser figure. Then of course comes the joint parameters (there's a REASON why I made chains and not rope ;)) but.. the basic riggin is dead easy :) Just stay away from the setup room L

I wanted to emulate the movement of a string (or rope), and to use a Poser Figure which simply contains a long line of body parts which contain params for Twist/side-side/up-down.
The nearest I have is the 'Snake' from PoserPro2014's library. But that only has around 40 segments (body parts) and the parts are all different sizes.
I was hoping to use a Figure with at least 200 parts.
I am not experienced with modelling, so would be keen to learn of any suitable 'free' Figure. Or suggestions how I might create one myself (with the least pain, given my current lack of skils in this area).
Note. I shall be scripting the Poses, given the complexity of manually posing such a Figure.
Many thanks.
