Subject: Saved Poser 2014 images

I transferred some saved poser renders from my Win XP to my Win7 comp...

When I open the folder asked what program should open these files? When I try and add poser.exe nothing happens.... Tried several times.  What am I doing wrong?

Saved RENDERS are image files. In whatever format you chose to save them in. Like PNG (I think that's the default) - Poser can't open pictures, you'll need an image viewer for that.

If you mean PZ3s, Poser should be able to open those.

Right click the file icon in Windows Explorer.
A menu will open, options vary with different versions of Windows.
If available select "Open with".
You'll be presented with a dialog enabling you to select, or browse then select the desired application.
There will also be an option check box to "Always open with your chosen application" which you should select.

If you just get the option to "Open" then go with that. The dialog will vary slightly to that above. Again look for the check box option to always open with your selected application.

Thereon after you should be able to double click on the file and have it open.

Yes I saw the option "open with"...But when I do search for poser.exe and click on the icon, thinking it will open the pz3 with it, window goes back the way it was..For some reason It didn't like the program I wanted to use...Strange...

Yet if I open Poser 2014, option open, the pz3 opens with no problem...Turned the comp off and now on my stable, wonderful Win XP..

If you are referring to PoserPro 2014, the execution icon is PoserPro.exe, not Poser.exe.

Back again...

I have two internal drives..

Main drive has C + D

2nd drive has G + E

Poser 2014 is installed on my G drive...Wonderful Win7 insists on wanting to find

it in C...Infact when searching PoserPro.exe doesnt even show up..Yet*  can open the drive and its right there..*

Solution? If it wasnt for the 64 bit I would never have upgraded the one  comp..Both were WinXP

WIndows 7 wants programs to be in C:Program Files(x86).

Even if you move it there, I doubt that it will work properly.  I've got Poser 9 on C, and the PZ3 is associated with the correct Poser.exe, but clicking through Explorer doesn't make Poser load the file.  It just says "Poser executable has stopped working.  Windows is checking for a solution."

Of course Windows never finds a solution to any problem, so the checking is absurd.

I don't think Poser has ever worked nicely from the command line or from Explorer.  It didn't work for me in XP either.

open your registry and find the entry for PoserSceneAsciiFile
Under this there is entry shell--Open--Command

Put the location of wherever you put executable plus argument of 1 (In my case it is "I:/PP2014/PoserPro.exe" "%1")

The actual key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/PoserSceneAsciiFile/Shel/lOpen/Commmand

But the associate file command should have taken care of this in first place, if for some reason the original install did not.

But in the above image, that PoserPro is all you need to click on. That is the correct file, but the .exe extension is not showing. Your Windows installation has file extensions hidden by default

How to turn "Hide File Extensions" off.

Start >Computer.

Look for Organize on the menu and in the drop down (little down pointing arrow) click

  Folder and search options

In the box that appears click the View tab.

Here you will see a small window Advanced settings.

Look for Hide extensions for known file types and un-check, then click OK.

Not my win7... My PP2014 is installed in D:Program files

No problem with that whatsoever. I did select the "install it the oldfashioned way" (forgot the actual wording, I think the last of the options) so it won't put anything in the pesky Virtual Store. But you can install int anywhere you want, not just on c:

All my older Poser versions reside on my k: which is an external drive.

Your problem seems baffling but I've looked through the whole thread and need to ask you some questions. Going back to the top:

Quote - I transferred some saved poser renders from my Win XP to my Win7 comp...

When I open the folder asked what program should open these files? When I try and add poser.exe nothing happens.... Tried several times.  What am I doing wrong?

Did you actually mean 'poser renders' or did you mean 'poser scenes' ?

Are you 100% certain that the files you're trying to open with Poser are .pz3 files? Because you originally had file extension display turned off...

...now that you're displaying the file extension, do the files you're having trouble with have the .pz3 extension?

Have you ever, when saving a render as an image file, manually typed in the .pz3 extension?

Open one of the files you're having trouble with in a text editor, then cut and paste (into a reply here) the first few lines so that we can determine what kind of file it really is.

character rendered in poser 2014 and saved to my character (Frankie Baywatch) folder.

No never manually saved as pz3 file. Poser does that automatically

Yes all my saved poser2014 pz3 files are giving me a problem..

Note...trouble started when I transferred my Poser saved from my Win XP comp to my Win7 comp...Is that the problem?  Everything was ok until I did that.

cspear ( ) posted Wed, 11 September 2013 at 11:23 AM

OK, that's definitely a Poser scene file (PZ3).

I think you're using some of the terminology inaccurately, which is incredibly confusing.

"character rendered in poser 2014 and saved to my character (Frankie Baywatch) folder"

Explain what you mean by "rendered" - if you render something in Poser you end up with an image which you export as a TIFF, JPEG, PNG or PSD file. You can't save a render as a PZ3.

Did you add whatever it was to a folder in your library (by clicking on the + at the bottom of the library window)? Or did you save the scene (PZ3) to a folder on your system?

What happens when you launch Poser by double-clicking PoserPro.exe? Does it launch OK and run normally? If it works as it should, can you open a PZ3 file using the File > Open... menu dropdown?

If anything goes wrong, make a note of any error messages or warnings and advise us.

I rendered in Poser 2014 then saved in my example Frankie folder. Only time I export as .png is if I want to be able to view the item . Sometimes you forget what the image iare by name only.

Have a shortcut to Poser.exe on my desktop..under graphics..Yes it opens np.. And yes if I click on open and go to 'Frankie' folder of saved ..it opens np...Only thing I cannot do is click on the icon in the folder and have it open in Poser. None of the items I save show a Poser icon...As stated now they all show notepad..

Right.

You're still using the term 'render' in a context that makes no sense, but we have established that Poser is working as it should.

The problem seems to be file type association. You need to associate the .pz3 extension with Poser.

Choose any file with a .pz3 extension. Right-click on it. *Open with > choose default program, *navigate to where Poser Pro is installed and click on PoserPro.exe as described a few posts ago.

All .pz3 files should now have the Poser icon and automatically open with PoserPro.
