Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 10 10:00 pm)
mmm I made some photoshop actions long ago, a few of them gave a sort of line draw effect. But that's as postwork, not in Poser.
The closest you can get to line drawn in Poser (in my expirience) is to use the Cartoon With Lines preview, very few, flat colours, simple ligting.. And then, instead of rendering, just antialias the preview.
Result will be something like this:

Am familiar with the process. Not what I was hoping to find. Check out DAZ new release for something similar for their D/S app. Though it looks just what I want do not want to get the app just to do the end product.....yet.
Hehe.. I'm afraid I tend tobreak out in hives with that proggie.
But there are ways, I just don't know them, but check here a few days back a link to an amazing animation was posted, made with pp2014. So the possibility is there if one knows how :)

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Hi Wanda!
These look ok but still not there. Why do the sample renders look so darn fuzzy?
I need crisp high res renders for reproduction or to get printed.
I have seen the effects around but could never figure out how they were done. RDNA also has some stuff that will do this really nice but not for P7.
But this is the effect I am looking for:

Well I have the full Adobe CS5 Suite and Photoshop is no new app for me, I use it for photo retouching and enhancing and stuff. I know how to paint with it fairly well though no longer have the patience to do so prefering to do as much as I can within Poser. Which is why I was hoping to find some line art render funcrtions I can patch into Poser7 and let it do most of the bull work I can then clean up in PhotoShop. I guess I am either going to have to bite the bullit and get a newer version of Poser or just go back to PhotoShop, take a sedative and hope I can stay awake long enough to "giterdun!"
Thanks all for the helpful ideas.

I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!
Quote - If it helps you save wasting your time looking....I've spent years looking for a method to get Poser to do it and have never found anything suitable and long ago decided it was OK to combine Poser and Photoshop instead. I know you have Poser 7 but you might like to know that the latest version of Poser can produce a kind of line art which sometime looks OK. I've yet to really delve into it myself, but this is a quick test, a picture being worth a thousand words an' all. Direct render out of Poser Pro 2014.
Looks pretty good Paul. A lot of those Poser render functions have a lot to with lighting and prepping the figures in the stage to be rendered that way. Just picked P9 for under $50 bucks....having to always go on the cheap always leaves me behind the curve....maybe I'll install that and see what I can squeeze out of it.
Thanks.

Hi
Yeah, I've seen those scripts at DNA and they look brilliant but I didn't think they were for Poser7. Do you know off hand if they'll work? What version of Poser did you use them in?
I'm pretty sure I was using some version of shaderworks from the early days. Might have been a free version at least initially. But did you see the new deal from SM? I think I got an email newsletter from SM a couple of days ago advertising poser 9 for next to nothing, like about 30 bucks. I like the render engine in 9 much better than the old render engine. everything looks brighter and nicer.
Love esther

Yeah, like I said I did pick it up for a bit over $40 and just gotta figure out the best way to install it. I think I might back Poser7 up to keep the runtime folder and stuff and then migrate everything over to the Poser 9 install. Hope I don't lose all the damn DAZ preferences and initializers for their figures in the process. I am going to hate having to reinstall them all.
Regarding the DNA stuff I think these scripts are more recent. I am going over there to see what is up with them.
PS Don't call me Wanda...

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Here are some examples of Olivier's Art Materials 1 shaders used with Semideau's Python UI (you don't need the UI; it's just a convenience tool for quicker work-flow). I bought them the instant they were available. I've used these in P6,P7,P8,P9 and now PPro2014. And even though the UI screen shots says "Poser 7 only", it actually means Poser 7 and above and the actual UI is also nowadays quite different from that in the screenshots.
I use these line renders ONLY as composite layers in Photoshop so I haven't bothered to tweak the settings much; I've just loaded a "good enough" setting I'm familiar with and rendered, but I think you'll get the idea. With a little bit of tweaking you can achieve pretty much anything. The cost of the shaders (+Python UI) is a bit steep, but personally I consider these best money spent in poserdom since my main interest is to do illustrative work with a hand-drawn impression. And just to be clear, these are straight renders with no postwork. The first two are tritonal and the third is black and white only.
Oh Yah! Dems'Da Ones!!
Been rendering all morning testing some new stuff I want to use in a render and haven't had time to go to DNA yet.
Ok, please patiently explain to me the purpose of the Python Scripts besides just saying work flow? I don't know how to use them since I have never done so and what is their purpose.
Are the shaders easy to use? When it comes to stuff like this I am not as smart as a fifth grader! :(
How much were the art materials?
What do you mean: "....... the actual UI today is actually different than the screen shots". (UI being User Interface?)

I am soooo sorry...SIR!
I thought...well...your avatar...oh damn....I hate the damn internet!!!!!!!!!
OK now recomposed.
Some time ago I posted a thread here trying to get help on how to set up addidional RUntime Folders in Poser 7 when I first got it.
Never happened. I ran a few people ragged and poor folks I think must have begun to hate me for being such a cabbage head for my profound inability to wrap my...brain....cabbage leaves....around the to them, simple steps.
Still have not been able figure it out so I'll probably wind up with a behemouth Poser 9 Runtime folder! :(
Quote - Install Poser 9 and you can simply add your Poser 7 runtime to the P9 library as an external runtime. You will be able to use Poser 7, too....

hot when it first came out and still is. :)
Well ... I'll try.
There exists a bunch of shaders by Olivier called Art Materials 1. These are just a collection of Poser material files to be applied to any surface. Then there are Python based graphical user interfaces to make that process easier. If you only have Poser 7, you should be looking at the Semideau's Python UI for Art Materials I linked earlier on. If you are on Poser 9 or above, you will need this, this and this. They essentially do the same thing, but look different. And in both cases Olivier's Art Materials 1 shader pack is needed.
Let's assume you purchase only the Art Materials 1 package. It containts about fifty shaders such as shaders for smooth, gradient, quadritonal, tritonal, duotonal and monotone for many different colors. You would then need to apply the selected shader manually to every material you have in your scene ... this is not only tedious, but also rather slow and controlling all the possible parameters of the shaders is hard.
If you also have the graphical user interface for either Poser 7 or Poser 9 and above, the interface allows you to select which shader to apply and to which figures/props in your scene with a few clicks and select lists. The Python packages also include a very good PDF document in which each and every button and input field is not only explained but also is provided a full setup to achieve some example effects. The shaders can be applied in many ways: you can rip out transparencies, bump channels or displacement channels via checkbuttons (all the above images of mine have displacement maps included in the shader - if I would have wanted, I could have just checked out the displacement and the rendered outcome would be "smoother" where displacement is in effect.
All the shaders have a vast number of options with which to control many aspects of the rendering process. But luckily the presets for each shader are adequate ... quite good even so they are a good starting point. The interface allows easily to create interesting combinations as well: you could make your background props to be rendered as monotonal black&white and a center figure with quadtritonal colors derived from the figure's textures for example. Or perhaps even to let a figure render normally and make an item he/she is holding to be rendered as a tritonal toon shader with a bright yellow color.
All those above images are rendered with only a single infinite white light positioned near the camera. This makes rendering very fast since not a lot of calculation is needed. As said two of the above example images are tritonal, but without colors: it means the shaders use black and white and calculate grey values to where light shadows would fall. And the third one is rendered with only a black&white shader.
The shaders are easy to use, but the easiness comes only when using the Python UI sets. The Art Materials 1 package is still rather expensive at $50 USD and while it certainly can be used alone, it does have it's drawbacks - particularly when one wants to change the settings of the applied shaders after a test render has gone in an unwanted direction.
There are also some caveats and tricks to know to get the best mileage out of them. For example the eyelashes of V4 can be real tricky - I usually just don't apply the shaders to eyelashes (you can just click the material zones you want the shaders to apply). Also the effects are really good on organic models only. For example getting a good black&white line render with an architectural prop will require you to get deeper into the settings. Luckily the included PDF gives good tips on how to circumvent oddities such as vast black areas, block-like artifacts on renders and such.

It's really easy to use Poser 7 stuff in Poser 9. I still add all the geometries and textures to my Poser 7 library so I can still use Poser 7 when I want. I have Poser 8, 9, Poser Pro 2010 and Poser Pro 2014. In all the later versions, including Poser 9, go to the library tab. Look for a picture of a folder with a running man and a + on it. This is your add runtime button. You can add your existing Poser 7 runtime to your newly installed Poser 9 libraries without having to move anything. It's really easy and very convenient. I can try to do screen grabs if you need picture instructions (some learn better with words, others with pictures).

Yeah I am one of thos dunderheads. I look at the library tab and the only image of a running man is the Poses library. I have been through this so many times It drives me crazy. Now keep in mind I am working with Poser 7 at this moment. Maybe in newer versions of Poser it is different?
Oh great thnks so much. I finally got it and to think several well meaning folks spent days trying to get this through my head verbally and using Poser 9 instead of Poser 7. I kept trying to tell them there was no such running man folder with a "+" sign on it. Made me feel really stupid and no matter how many times i mentioned I was working in Poser 7 they just......well, I don't want to dis them, they were well meaning and tried being helpful.
But as you so plainly put t, some do good with verbal directions others need pictures.
I am going to do a screen capture of this guide and save it for when i finally install Poser 7.
Thank You Veeeeery much!
Quote - You are very welcome. I have done some computer training at work over the years and learned to make the handouts with both words and screen prints. Feel free to IM me if you need any additional help when you do the install.
I wanted to ask though not related to this particular subject if you have any good tutorials on using the morph/deforming tool in P7 or if you know of a good simple tut around I can use to figure it out. Also need a good simple retard level tut to learn the cloth room and the advanced material room and.......... :(

I'm hopeless at the morph tool. Poserfashion.net has some tutorials and free dynamic clothes. They're based on Poser 5 but at least it will give you a good start. If you're a member, PoserWorld has a beginning tutorial on Dynamic clothing, too. It's also based on Poser 5 but the basics are the same.Have you checked out PoserWorld? You have to pay to join, but you can choose the time for your membership. You are allowed to download tons of stuff for your membership fee. I became a lifetime member at least 10 years ago and have definitely gotten my money's worth.
I'm currently trying to figure out dynamic hair. I have carpal tunnel disease and neuropathy in both hands so I can only spend a few minutes at a time on the computer unless I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
Try doing a search here in the forum for tutorials. Most of the folks here are really friendly and helpful.
Poser 9 has a build in Postwork manager.
Look under scripts. => Postwork manager.
It can do any color variation, including Gray scale and B&W, or tone art, or line art.
Just play with the settings.
It is all build in.

but that doesn't handle transparency properly so it is not a great solution. PP 2014 has it solved though
I aim to update it about once a month. Oh, and it's free!

Hi
Does anyone know of any good scripts, or utilities or render settings that I can set up in Poser 7 to get good clean line art without tones or cluttering noise etc?
I used to do Pine & Ink drawing and love the clean lines you get with that tool set but not having drawn any line since I found P4 what seems like a life time ago I want to try and get that look from my Poser 7 work.
