There was a recent renderosity survey where afterwards one could choose from a number of "prizes".  I naturally assumed there would be the usual renderosity liscence., like something one has bought but on sale for zero. AFterall if I wanted "free stuff" I could just download something from the free area here at renderosity.  And what they were giving us was a "prize".

Now I'm not saying there is anything wrong with having free stuff with restrictions on it. I'm sure lots of people find it useful.  Like some people love peanuts and for other people peanuts are fatal.

For me, free stuff with restrictions is like poison in my runtimes.  I don't want it there.  And I never download it knowingly. I have a massive collection of content and I don't want to have to check readmes. 

Well I didn't check the renderosity survey because I assumed it was like one of their bought items but for zero dollars.   However I did happen to eventually check the readme, more by luck than anything else, and it was there i found this:-

Use and, or modify it as much as you like, for personal or Non-Commercial work.
But DO NOT sell or resdistribute it in any way, part of it or all. DO NOT include it in any CD or other collection.

some blah blah about the file itself, and then this bit was also at the bottom of the readme "   And if you use it... Credit the creators... "

So I wrote to the email addy for commercial licenses a week ago with an email titled clarification please:-  

"Hi there,

I downloaded your cage from renderosity as survey_file_159 but when I checked the read me I found restrictions on usage.

Is it correct that I can't use it for commercial renders and if I use it for a render I have to credit you?

I must admit I was not expecting anything like that when I downloaded it.  I don't normally have any restricted products on my computer except accidentally.  And I wouldn't have expected renderosity to give me one of these types of products as a prize. I assumed they gave me a gift with their bought product EULA the same as the things I buy from renderosity.  It was just luck that I checked the read me.

Interesting.  I picked the 3D-Arena item, and it seems to have the normal Rosity license.

I, too, try not to download items that do not allow commercial use, just so I don't have to keep track.

Heh and I chose the hair fits... which turned out to be for hairdos I didn't have (wish they'd been listed, but oh well...)

Regarding free stuff, just a note about mine: they're all free to use in commercial renders except, for obvious rwasons, the Star Trek stuff. And although I love to get a note whenever something is used commercially, it's by no means mandatory :)

oh well I wouldn't have minded doing their survey for no prize at all.  It's just that I nearly had a bad accident and installed restricted stuff.

Yikes! I can't remember what I chose. I better check on that. I assume that must've slipped through somehow? They can't have actually intended the prize to be a restricted item, can they?

Maybe someone from renderosity will come and comment.

I would not have.  Not a chance.

Maybe you could ask for an exchange as there was no way to know about the restrictions before you made your choice?

Checked mine and I picked something else luckily!

Any and all of DM's free stuff I've ever downloaded have had those stipulations.  I just put them in a FREE folder within my DM folder so I know not to use them if I'm doing anything I'm getting paid for.

well you have a system that works for you.  My system is to have nothing on my comptuter that has restrictions.  That is the most reliable way.  I mean you could make a picture and forget that you put things with restrictions in that picture one day.  But hey, if it works for you that's good.

The point is though that as far as I remember there was nothing to tell anyone before choosing and downloading the item that it wasn't for commercial use. Not everyone will know that a particular vendor's items always have restrictions.

especially newbies.  I'm not a newbie and it was almost me too.

I chose that file not knowing about the restriction.  It was not a freebie, I gave my time and information to get it.  I spend plenty of money here and do not feel I deserve to be decieved and cheated.

Do DM's products sold here at RMP have restrictions, too?

I always assume that all bought renderosity products have the same EULA.  Everyone I've ever looked at has.

i find the store category filters backwards. 

I'd like to see the figure name first, then all the sub types.
example: Tyler, see everything for Tyler

especially nowadays with Dawn, V4, V5 looking similar, iz hard to tell from the promo pics

Yes I agree with you there, or at least an icon on the thumbnails for each character.

welL I only did the survey for the prize I have to honestly admit, and now I can't use the prize.

Also I'm disappointed that I did what it said in the readme of the file, to email the maker of the product for permission, and that was 2/52 ago, yet they never got back to me.  What sort of prize is that?

I think you should ask for an exchange for one of the other prizes. Seems reasonable to me if there was no way to know you couldn't use the prize before you downloaded it.

Yeah, it's not your fault you can't use your prize - and it might mean that the admins check the prizes more carefully next time to avoid more people running into problems!

Whew! So it isn't just me! I've been staring at this pose set called "Threesomes" with poses for Dawn, M4 and V4, and for the life of me I can't tell V4 from Dawn.

Besides, all ya'll white people look alike to me!
