THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Does anyone know how to make a Bryce made .obj file 3d printable

karl.garnham1 ( ) posted Sun, 22 September 2013 at 5:48 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 2:20 AM

Hi Bryce Forum

I am trying to make a 3d model for a printing company but when I send the .obj they say it isn't printable because it needs to be a unified mesh with no holes and no internal polys. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Karl

Attached Link: PoseRay Free DL

From what I've read an .obj with a .mtl file is all that's needed so try running it through a free app called PoseRay which I use to convert objects for Terragen as it out puts the .myl Bryce doesn't seem to.

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Thanks Bobby

Does Poseray work on Mac? I am trying to make stuff for a client and I have given the .obj files but he says they need to be water tight and I am not sure what he means by that. if I can't install poseray would Pov Ray work?

Thanks

Karl

Hi Karl,

Watertight means the object is a completely enclosed volume (sometimes called a shell) without any holes or cracks. There cannot be any intersecting triangles, which would happen if you had intersecting volumes, however, nested volumes (one object is completely enclosed by the other) or separated volumes can be used. Intersecting triangles can also be caused by modeling operations.

There are specific tools that are used to correct objects for printing. Netfabb Basic is free and does a very good job with many common issues. However, it can't fix intersecting volumes or intersecting triangles.

If you are able to share your object, I would be happy to take a look and give you some suggestions.

Thank you cjd that would be great

I would like you to see it because 3d printing is quite new to me and I have never done it before. I have attached a picture of one the models. Thank you for your help.

The objects would have to be unioned (boolean) together for it to print. Can you do this with replicated objects? (I am not familiar with using replicated objects, maybe they can be converted to a regular object?)

Hi cjd

Thats a good question it could be because they have been multireplicated I will remake an object and then ask him if that works thank you for you help.

It would need to be brought into a 3D app that can export .stl, .STL files for 3D printing, I ran into this problem before and I put it into Maya and it still had issues after cleaning up the .obj file, so if you could re-make that object in something like blender or Hexagon or any 3D "modeling" app, you will be a lot better off.

Do atleast one thing a day that scares the hell outta ya!!

Thanks Clay

Sadly Bryce is the only program in terms of 3d I know how to use. and I haven't back from the guy yet so maybe he isn't interested? Thanks for your help though.
