Hey Brycers, my name is Jim. I've been a long-time Rendo haunter now and belivie this is my first thread.

Some of you will have come across the Artist Features I've been doing at DigiSprawl from the forums at D3D, or the groups on FB, or maybe if you happened upon my DeviantART page. I don't use Bryce myself but time and again I've found myself drawn over to the Bryce works. For this reason 7 of the 9 features I've posted on my blog are about artists that use Bryce.

You can find the index of features here

The current Featured Artist needs no introduction here. You all know Orbital, right?

Anyway, hope to see you guys over there, and that you all enjoy the interview and image selection.

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum formally...you really should give Bryce a whirl...it's really cheep at DAZ...free I think though in all honesty I haven't checked for ages...We tried it and we all liked it...you try it, maybe you'll like it to, heh heh heh..off to check out your features....

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Hi Bobby,

Glad you enjoyed the interview. I've actually got a copy of Bryce - grabbed it while it was free. I've also got me David Brinnen/Horo's Bryce Basics DVD series. I got all inspired to learn Bryce after the initial wave of Bryce features. Just too busy with ofther software, and the website. Got Poser too but never touch that either.

Thanks for the welcome.

Yeah, I hardly touch Poser either although I got version 5 when that was free.

When you do try Bryce, and want to move on to even more interesting stuff after David and Horo's DVD - they've posted a lot more stuff around, David is currently adding videos to his YouTube - either on how to make fascinating twisted cube thingie objects in Wings3d or on lighting those in Bryce with really indepth lighting procedures - I'm following a few of those right now - the latest render is taking forever!!

I'm using an 'Obscure Lighting' method.  It's weird!  But I must admit it is making my "Twisted Mobius Cube Thingie" look really good.

Here's the normal render, I'll post the 'Obscure Light' one if it ever finishes rendering.

There are many more excellent tutorials by Paul P. aka pinhead here:http://pappathan.net/_tut/Pinheads3DCTutorials.htm and I think you will find Hobbit and some of the oldtimers on the Delphiforums under Bryce.

@Fran: even though I haven't used Bryce I check in on what David and Horo are up to from time to time. Their YouTube channel is great. I watch this stuff just for fun - yep I'm a render geek like that. What's your obsucre lighting method? Looks like you're using high ambience and some sort of global illumination - true ambience in Bryce? I'm a big fan of experimentation in all the software I use.

@ArtByMivan: thanks for the link. I hadn't seen pinhead's tutorials.

 Obscure Lighting?

Oh it's not my method, it's one of David's tuts.  It gives nice results I think, depending on the HDR you use, but I can't get the same results as he got (but then he is using an hdr image from a package you have to buy, and I can't afford that at the moment) I did try creating an hdr from an image of the same place (I think so: 'treppenhalle' does mean 'Hall of Stairs' doesn't it?) which at a lower res Horo gives away free, but I just can't get the same effect at all.  My render looks completely different to David's... and of course mine took 22 hours plus to finish rendering, so... well I can't justify tying up the PC, or even just Bryce, for so long.

So I usually just do your bog standard renders.  Sometimes I use a half light dome I made; this can make a product look better. Great for promo images either for freestuff or now I'm doing it for stuff I want to sell.

Here's the link to the particular tut I watched and followed for that render:

However David has quite a few tutorials on this subject, and not just Obscure Light, there's also Obscure Glows, Obscure Gel's and SS and... loads more. I did a search under just 'Obscure' and tons of stuff came up on David's channel.

However, I see he's just uploaded 3 new tuts on Wings3d.. Hooray! More weird cubes! Gotta go!
