Subject: Import Poser characters into Blender so that the characters and materials render

Michaelab ( ) posted Sun, 10 November 2013 at 8:57 AM · edited Sun, 10 November 2024 at 1:07 AM

I'm attempting to use the script from teleblender:

https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts3/teleblendforposer
where it says to go here for the poser version:
http://3doutlaw.com/home/?page_id=631&did=17

so then I install the script, import a obj file (character) then run the script but I get an error:

python script fail look in the console for now and highlights this: import mcjMakeCylcesNodes in the code. That script is in the same folder.

I'm not a coder. What needs to be done to make this script work?

Hello Michaelab

I went thru the steps descriped on https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts3/teleblendforposer and I see mention of the outlaw script but no mention in where in the steps to use it so I disregarded that the mentioning of it for the moment. I follow the steps created a basic scene nothing elaborate and created a folder on my desk top saved the exported scene as an obj and then immediatedly export collada file same folder all with defualt changed no setting again following the instructions on the page ran the script and got no errors. If you can maybe post a screen shot of your console window might be able to help further

Ok, Lobo3433, I will do as you did and see how it works. Thanks for your trying it out. There is hope if it works for you!

It worked but as I said it was a very simple scene one charater ground plane and clothing prop did not pose the charater and lol think I forgot some lighting just wanted to see if the script themselves did what they were suppose to. I had questions about the outlaw script but found no documentation or info if it was run that script from within Poser or from Blender so that being the case left that part out. I have seen the fantastic renders using the the scripts in conjunction with Daz and have high hopes that they will work with Poser but as the auther of the scripts does mention in that set of instruction that there is possiblities you may have to further tweak the mtl file in a text editor or with in Blender itself. Good Luck and let me know how it comes out 👍

Thanks. Here's what I did step by step and maybe you can see what I'm doing wrong as I'm still getting an error.
  1. Poser 9: exported character as Wavefront OBJ - then exported as Collada/RWY to the same folder

  2. In Blender (2.69): set to Cycles Render

  • imported Wavefront obj file of character
  • opened text editor in Blender
  • "Open Text Block" menu and load mcjBlendBotForCarrara.py
  • click "Run Script"

And get error that I showed in the original post. Attached is a screenshot. Guess I can't upload the blend file.

OK this might sound like a silly question but when you copied all the scripts over to your Blender location did you copy them over to if using Windows 7

C:Program FilesBlender FoundationBlender2.6pscriptsmodules

Or to

C:UsersAppDataRoamingBlender FoundationBlender2.69scripts

reason I ask these go into the main Blender Program folder now I have had diffculty in the past with both Poser and Blender when it comes to Program Floder is write protected to get past this issue and this is just my personal set up not saying you need to copy it but I Installed both Poser and Blender to the C: drive outside of program files and I have had less diffculty with scripts that try to write back to the program files Folder. i am sure others here will say they have no issue but this has worked most often for me. But the that said the scripts do have to be in the main Blender folder where it is installed to.

OK went back thru all your screen shots you posted and the only thing I just spotted that is not in sync is the name of your obj and dae file I have both my obj and dae named exactly the same yours have two different names one is jason_thinking.obj and the corresponding mtl is fine the dae is jase_thinking.dae and that might be the issue it is the only one I see that might be throwing things off

Hello Michaelab

I have tried to repeat and recreate your error and not succeeding ran the script from with in your Blend file also ran it from my own location where I have mine defualt and can not recreate the error you are getting. I have tried several times on my laptop on my PC and a spare that I use for testing other things in VM and can not for the life of me recreate the error. It worked and found the script each time. Question is this version you are running of Blender from a zip file or actually installed? is this an official build from Blender.org or from http://www.graphicall.org? Do you have a Nvida graphic card to be abel to take advantage of cycles? At this point I am really stumped and hope that someone else might jump in with some possible answers or help

I thank you for your effort, Lobo3433.

To address your concerns I uninstalled the version of blender I had and installed 2.69 from blender.org. My video card is a generic Intel HD Graphics in a Dell Inspiron Laptop. I can run Cycles and it does work but sometimes a little glitchy.

I'm now going to start with a fresh download of blender 2.69 and reload the scripts and try again. I'll post back here with results.

Thanks again.

Michaelab ( ) posted Sun, 10 November 2013 at 4:56 PM

Success!!! I think. I ran the script and no errors but how do I know it worked? What am I supposed to see?

OK just know that yes Cycles will be abit glitchy not sure if or how it works on non Nvidia cards for use of GPU rendering in cycles. mine also falls short and I have a Nvidia card but my card is only a capability 1.x card but saving up for a GTX now that the holidays are coming and gotta love Newegg 👍 Now I will tell you I did notice like mentioned in the earlier steps that the scene would need some fine tuning like mentioned https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts3/teleblendforposer and I know he is still working on the scripts to fine tune them for poser but I hope that our exchange today has been helpful Good luck

Yes, thank you very much. Didn't know I had a glitchy version of Blender. That would explain issues I've had with rigging and rigify. Thanks for having me check this.

Now the Cycles works great! I appreciate your time and effort. Many problems are now solved.

Til later....

Congrats what I noticed the first time i ran the script and it worked was that my 3D scene the camera focus changed which it did when I teste4d your file so if that has happened where you see that now you are looking from the prespective of the camera now I would go back to the fine tuning steps as mentioned in the link above and you might need to adjust your materials and textures again referring to the steps from the link I just reposted. Finally do a test render going to make you a blender artist yet :thumbupboth:

Someone else responded in the blenderartist.org forum:

"Maybe I am over simplifying, or maybe there is something I am missing here with how you are looking at cycles, but Blender 2.69 can import a DAZ or Poser scene as an obj and the materials and textures are now imported with it.
Granted it is still not perfect because there is tweaking that needs to be done to the materials diffuse levels, reflection maps set too strong, etc. However, at the top center of blender you can change the option from Blender Render to Cycles Render and it works just fine. "

Is that true? We don't really need that script at all?

As to importing the scene from Poser as obj I know Blender has always been able to import an obj yes has it rendered well from Poser by defualt not with out allot of tweaking and work usually textures would be flipped lighting from one to the other was not compatiable main issue usually due to Posers native scaling which often was so tiny that you have to usually increase the scaling from Blenders defualt to at least 50 times of Posers. Has that changed sinc3e the release of 2.69 be honest I don't know I have seen that Poser's scaling still comes in rather tiny in Blender but zooming in has made it easier to model on a Poser figure than before. I have only started to fully explore cycles renderer and from the forums that I follow that focus on the use of Poser, Daz in conjuntion with Blender these scripts have made things a tad simpler for those who are also just starting out with Blender especial those with in the DAZ communities. I have and do follow the forums at BlenderArtist since I am a member there as well but have noticed that the post related to Poser or Daz Studio are as not numerous as they are here or even Daz3D and much of the advice I have given you today came from my times doing searches and asking questions especially here at Renderosity not taking anything away from anywhere else but we have a strong and knowledgable community that I have grown to trust if they lead me down a path to help answer my questions. So can you Render a defualt scene export from Poser as obj perhaps will it hurt to make your job easier using some scripts that were contributed just for that reason to make life a little easier why not. The wonderful thing about learning is we can do it so many ways. Sorry for the long winded answer

Understood. Thanks.

So, attached is what I rendered with Cycles and NOT tweaking the materials. Not sure where to begin, but obviously there is a purplish hue to all the materials.

I saw that in my own test when rendering I think at the lower portion of the steps from the scripts instructions towards the bottom he mention something about that concerning the diffuse but that is still a pretty good render from the what I can see :thumbupboth:

Sorry, just saw this.  Let me know what version of poser you are running.  I did that script for Poser 9.  I assume it should still work, but in case I need to tweak it, it would be good to know.  I also have Blender 2.67 running

I just retried it, its all still working on my system.

I also kept some notes in this post for post-import cycles materials tweaking:  http://3doutlaw.com/home/?p=760

Hello 3Doutlaw

I am running poser pro 2012 and I knew of your script but be honest did not know if it was to be used in Blender or in poser itself so I went with giving the defualt guidelines from https://sites.google.com/site/mcasualsdazscripts3/teleblendforposer so wasnt sure how your script was incorparated into the workflow I did notice one issue with using like the Dawn character becuase of her being weightmap her lashes well didnt seem in no way nature looking but that could be dealt with another time I just tried to help with what i could explain

Its a Poser script.  You install mjcTeleblender per its guidelines, and then run my script from poser, enter a name in the save as dialog (like I just put in Andy, for the default scene) and that's it.  It will export from poser, then call mjcTeleBlender which calls blender.

EDIT: you dont need this script, I just made it to save time...one click and I was in Blender.

I've been having a play with Poser figures in Blender, to the point of creating some very basic hair and shaders for the skin: the latter is very much a WIP, with a lot of set-backs and learning-curve. I'm a bit anal about naming and organising, not to mention node-setup, so it will be a while before I get a working skin shader I'd be willing to share.

Just saw that JuanJose-Torres had replied to on another thread - now that's a man who knows his shaders! Wonder if he's got anything in the way of skin (not an orange, altho his oranges are perfect) 😄

Hi 3doutlaw,

How do you run your script in Poser? Do you run it from File>Run Poser Scripts and then find that code saved as a .py file?

And if so, what file am I supposed to select when it asks me to select one? The .pz3 file? The .dae or .obj file?

3doutlaw ( ) posted Fri, 15 November 2013 at 9:39 PM

Yes you can run it that way.  Or you can drop it in the script menu folder and then it would show up there.  Either way is fine.

When the file browser dialog appears, you just need to browse to a place/folder where you are OK with all of the maps and OBJ's getting created...then type a new name in the filename portion.  It does not need an extension.  It will then create a folder and an OBJ of that name, for import to Blender.

(it looks like a selection dialog, but its really a save dialog to save the OBJ and stuff in the place you want it)

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Thu, 26 December 2013 at 5:12 AM

Would your script do anything about all that myTexture.jpg, myTexture.jpg.001, myTexture.jpg.002, myTexture.jpg.003, myTexture.jpg.004, myTexture.jpg.005, myTexture.jpg.006, myTexture.jpg.007 nonsense that gets generated when you import an OBJ that reuses texture files, 3DOutlaw?

Cleaning up that mess is the most LABORIOUS job ever... trying to do this scene:

...a scene I did in Poser, in Blender has been an exercise in frustration. Putting a decent shader and all that on the mesh is trivial compared to dealing with all those unused texture files: that's driving me barmy!
