Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
Quote - Not all Genesis stuff works in Poser out of the box. Only if the creator has included Poser content files. If they haven't, no workie ;). You'll have to fire up DS to make Poser compatible files then.

Hello Laurie and thanks for the reply.
So, are you saying that even if the items say the include the DSON it doesn't always work in Poser?
I have one by RawArt - RoboGen II - that is EVEN supposed to work with V4 and the textures will not work.
I don't use DS so if this is going to require fiddling around and converting things I will simply return the items. That's just plain rediculous.
D3D's DSON Loader will allow you to search for and load DUF files. So...I don't think you need the poser companion files? Don't quote me. I'm still new at this Genesis stuff.
You can find it here for free.

...It's a pun.
Quote - How are you installing - with the Install Manager or by manually unzipping? Where are your Data folders in relation to your Runtime folders - they should be sitting alongside the folder called Runtime (for example, Public DocumentsSmith MicroPoser Pro 2014 ContentData).
Hello RHaseltine.
I think you were the one person who responded to my DAZ forum request for help.
I have found that when what things I have for Genesis that DO work they were the things I did both with - unzipped and placed both manually AND automatically. So, after unzipping in automatic mode, I have follow the path and drop the files directly into the correct locations.
Sadly this does not work for everything. V6 and her Pro Bundled item still do not all work.
I am hoping someone other can tell me why.

The biggest misconception people have with genesis is thinking DSON automatically means Poser compatible.
It doesn't. DSON is the file format specification within DS to specify how materials, poses, morphs, are translated into the scene; not whether it works in Poser. The poser DSON format importer also reads the specification through the Poser Companion files, which are basically dummy poser files with python calls in them back to the DSON specification.
Things that are tested to work in Poser are notated right in the "What's included" part of every product page, with the words "Poser Companion Files"... that tells you that it was tested for Poser. I'm not sure how people are missing that section when it tells you what's included in the product. How exactly do you know what you're getting and complaining afterwards if you're not bothering to read what the product includes?

Hello Hana-Hanabi.
Thanks for your help.
I just went to the download page for that and I noticed it says there "This simple Python script allows you to load DSON files for DAZ Studio 4 and up in Poser without requiring Poser companion files."
I don't use DAZ Studio. Can this still be used by someone like me?
Which item specifically won't work? I can look at the product page and tell you directly if there are Poser companion files or not.
One of the pitfalls of using DS tech in Poser is that not everything is compatible and if the creator of the item you're trying to use has not created Poser companion files you will have to make them yourself or pass over that item.

Quote - Well Male_M3dia these things I am complaining about DO INDEED have CF zip files included. Doesn't THAT mean they should work in Poser?
Yes. When you install the product, you need to install BOTH sets of files. The Poser companion files goes in a runtime structure that can be read by Poser, and the DSON files go to whereever you installed Genesis. The companion files contain the material settings for Poser and makes the call back via DSON to load the Genesis character.
The Dimension3D script may work for some instances, but in this one I wouldn't use it as you are skipping over the material settings for the Robogenii when you don't need to. Also I would not depend on that script for any clothing as DS-only clothing that wasn't tested for Poser may not have the grouping Poser needs to load it, so it may just come in as garbage.
Laurie.
The list is long but, one small example is the String Bikini that comes with V6 Pro Bundle. It DOES come with a CF zip file but it will NOT conform to V6 but WILL conform to The Girl 6.
Fashion Hair is another one. It too has CF files.
The list goes on. I am sure something isn't installed or not installed correctly, that's why I really could use some sort of tutorial if there is one.
Some things work. Some things don't even if they DO have the CF files.
I was wrong about the RoboGen II product. That one does NOT include a CF zip. I was thinking of another product.
However, as stated above there are plenty of Genesis II things that DO have the CF files that will not work.
I just tried the DSON Loader to try to get the V6 String Bikini Bottom to fit and it had no effect at all. It still will not conform. Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, yes, I have tried the "Transfer Active Morphs" thing numerous times.

Interesting. If you start Poser and navigate to the DAZ People folder in the library you installed genesis you should see your genesis 2 characters. There will be, I assume, Genesis 2 Base, Victoria 6 and Girl 6.
For you: if you load Girl 6 the string bikini will conform, however if you load Victoria 6 the string bikini will not conform.
What happens if you:
Load Girl 6 and conform string bikini. Then select Girl 6 body. In the properites window parameters tab there will be an entry called Actor. If you expand this you will find two sub-entries. If you expand People you will another called Real World. If you expand this you will find all the genesis 2 female morphs you have. Girl 6 should have a setting of 1.
If you set the Girl 6 setting to 0 you will get the base g2 female. Does the bikini still conform? If you now set Victoria 6 to 1, does the bikini still conform?
Great idea VonCroy!
I just tried that now and here is the result:
Setting G6's morph to zero reurns the Genesis 2 to the base Gen 2 morph and the bikini DOES auto-conform to the shape. However, now setting the body shape to V6, the bikini will NOT conform either automatically nor using the "transfer active morphs" script.
It was a great suggest though and not without it's rewards as NOW I KNOW it has something to do specifically with V6. I just cannot figure out what.
It seems like V6 was not installed correctly but I did it the same as G6.
OK. A few questions for you and anyone else who might wish to chime in:
Since I do NOT use DAZ Studio, when installing the Starter Essentials where exactly should they be unzipped to?
Since I do NOT use DAZ Studio, when installing the Starter Essentials CF where exactly should they be unzipped to?
I noticed that when looking at the hierarchy of the zipped files, even the "CF" files start with "Content", THEN comes "Runtime". Since Poser does not use "Content", do these files get unzipped directly or do you unzip from the "Runtime" level down ONLY?
Well, I have one Poser library I install ALL my genesis stuff into. I called this, rather imaginatively, 'DSON'. The Starter Essentials are unzipped into this. The Starter Essentials CF is also installed here. This must be working for you based on the result of your experiment.
All the rest of my genesis 2 stuff is also installed in 'DSON', both the DS studio stuff and the companion files.
I only have genesis 2, V6 and V6 HD. All this works. I have a few items of DAZ stuff for V6. All works. I have converted some V4 stuff for V6, again this works.
I unzip from the folder below content. If you drop below content in the zip and look at the hierachy in your Poser library the folders should match.
One other experiment. When you change from Girl 6 to Victoria 6, does the figure actually change?
I do have problems with V6 shaders, but that is a different topic.
All my Genesis stuff goes into a single runtime called "Genesis".
But you can't simply unzip to that runtime, as the Genesis stuff is packed for STUDIO, which uses an axtra "layer" called "content".
So, select all the stuff INSIDE that "content" folder and copy/paste it up one level so the included folder "runtime" is then located directly inside the Genesis runtime you linked to Poser.
So..
Make a new RUNTIME to connect to Poser. Call it "Genesis".
Unzip everything into that Genesis RUNTIME.
Open it. You'll see a folder named "content"
Grab everything inside that "content" folder and move it up one level, so..
Your Gensis RUNTIME contains an actual folder called "runtime".
DO not install anything into you Poser directory except the DSON Importer scripts.
DO not install anything into the "Poser Pro 2014 Content" folder that is located in your documents directory. Or the "Poser 10 Content" folder, if you have Poser 10
(But the DSON Importer will use that directory by default to store stuff inside. As well as your AppData folder. But usually you don't have to mess with that stuff anyway)
MAKE A NEW, COMPLETELY SEPARATE RUNTIME for all things Genesis.
(I even made one for Genesis 1 and one for Genesis 2)
This is what I see when I open my Genesis RUNTIME.
Notice there is a folder actually called "Runtime".
Poser can only see what's inside that folder.
It contains the cr2's that start the DSON importer that will then search for Genesis and its stuff inside the "data" folder and import it into Poser.
This for example is the complete path for Vicky 6 on my machine:
C:Users:MyAccountName:Documents:GENESIS-2014:Runtime:libraries:Character:DAZ People:Victoria 6.cr2
The Content folder isn't needed for anything (unless you have a content directory named that, of course). It's there to organise the files for the Install Manager. The manifest file is also for Install Manager, if you don't use that you can delete the manifest files (and for Poser-only use you can also delete the RuntimeSupport folder, or at least the .dsx files and image files from inside it)

Hello.
I am wondering if anybody can direct me to a straight forward tutorial to installing Genesis 2 and related content into Poser (specifically Poser Pro 2014) and getting it to work.
The silly thing is that I have installed the Genesis 2 base female and The Girl 6 and THEY seem to work just fine. Also, SOME of the other content that came with V6 Pro Bundle works.
BUT, for some reason I cannot figure out, not ALL the Genesis 2 and V6 content will work.
I HAVE installed the Starter Essentials - in a number of places: In my primary Poser 2014 Runtime, in my external runtime I am trying to use.
In an attempt to get this stuff to work I have installed IT in the same places too. But still, some of it works and some of it doesn't.
I posted this issue on the forum at DAZ3D but that proved fruitless as I got ONE reply from ONE admin there and it was a suggestion for what I already have done.
This is driving me MAD! Why does SOME stuff work and NOT others?
I am missing something here.
I have tried asking for DAZ3D's help in a number of other instances and they are typically USELESS.
PLEASE, SOMEBODY help me.
