Subject: WIP: Knock! Knock! …Who's there?

I've been working on a bit of a fan art character morph of the Eleventh Doctor, or Matt Smith Doctor, for the last wee while.

It's sculpted in ZBrush, off the M4 Base...

Thought there might be some other fans of the show here who'd be interested?

I was planning to distribute the morph for free, in some way, once it's done.

Rear profile bald... need to sort out the texture seams a bit still.

But planning to do more there anyway...

Lips jut out a bit too much I think (or just appear to large) and the eyes are a little off but it's a really close likeness! Nice work! Could be the lighting too though (for the lips anyway).

I had originally thought I'd use Rex here... and make some companions with Roxie.

That's still kind of my plan, beyond this M4 version. But I'm waiting to see if there are further developments from SM on those figures.

Meantime, I decided I'd have a go with M4 (and V4 if I do some female companions).

Quite like the idea of making morphs for the new Poser 10 / PP2014 Toon figures though too!

;-)

Keep hope alive is all I can say. ;-)

Thanks Teyon - and good call on the lips! He does need a bit less pout... I agree.

It's all that kissing that's been going on of late... they've stuck like that ;-)

...and yeah eyes too. Was struggling to get in there, to the eyes, with ZBrush. Think I'll need to try another modelling app to refine the eyes...

I'm burning a candle ;-)

Gonna do a displacement map (either in ZBrush or painted in Photoshop CS5 Extended) for the M4 version next, as well as paint more on the diffuse texture... reckon he needs more fine detail too...

Far more realistic than my inadvertently "toonish" take on Tom Baker.

Personally, I'd be thrilled with the amount of accuracy you've obtained so far.

Sincerely,

Bill

Tempt the Hand of Fate and it'll give you the "finger"!

Thanks Bill :-)

Yes... I tend to get a bit obsessive. It was your Tom Baker morph for M3 that inspired me to start this project. Once I've got a bit more practice in, I might feel ready to try making a Tom morph for M4.

I've found it tricky to get this one right, in terms of not making it too much of a caricature... as Smith's facial bone structure is somewhat pronounced :-)

But I think the Fourth Doctor's face will be harder still to get right...

Yeah, nitpick all you like, but he has that spark of recognition for me already. The hair helps, of course; a commercial offering, I assume?

The hair is one of Ali's, Hr-094, available here :-)

I'd like to have a go at my own version of the Matt Smith hair though. I'd like to get more of the quiff style that he is "rocking" in the latter episodes... plus this seems like a good excuse to learn this aspect of content creation too.

It is somewhere between Hr-095, Hr-085 and Hr-072 (in terms of Ali's styles) that I think is required ;-)

May be possible (and much easier than trying to model my own hair piece) to make a morph INJ for one of these products though, I suppose.

My own morph will be distributed freely in some way, shortly.

The texture and bump / displacement that I'm working on further, I'm not sure about.

The terms of the MR that I'm using as a base for that dictates "no freebies". So, unless I can get special permission from the MR creator, I might have to think up a way of distributing that for a token payment...perhaps with an alternate morph that is not a direct likeness?

EnglishBob ( ) posted Wed, 08 January 2014 at 4:16 AM

You could ask the MR creator for permission to distribute a low resolution texture for free. Most full-body fan art images would work fine with a head texture of 500 pixels or even less. Then you could offer a higher resolution version in return for a PayPal donation, or something.

Vendors are often willing to negotiate on these matters, in my experience.

Thanks EnglishBob

Good point about the low res.

Also I am ultimately overpainting the MR base quite substantially... and the license I'd distribute the character under, if it was all part of one freebie package, would likely have to specify non-commercial / fan-art only, or something along those lines... so these factors might help mitigate the concerns that the MR creator would have had in allowing freebies. I can only ask... and I'll do so once I can show them my finished product.

I'll share the morph, in any case, as soon as I get the last little niggly details around eyes and lips done... oh, and the forehead.

I'm pretty happy with the forehead shape. But there is a bit of warping of the texture / UVs crept in there, that I'd ideally like to sort.

That's a really good likeness there, Monkeycloud. If you do a companion and I hope you do use Roxie or Anastasia, I'd like to see Amy Pond or Rose Tyler.

Thanks :-)

My plan is to do some with V4 / Stephanie 4 Petite, first...

...but yeah... going forward I'd like to do some DW character morphs for, probably, Rex and Roxie, since those two are the most advanced in terms of Poser's latest tech.

I thought I'd break myself in on M4 / V4 though...
