Subject: How to increase the number of layers shown in cs6

iborg64 ( ) posted Mon, 20 January 2014 at 2:04 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 6:45 PM

I am using photoshop cs 6 and i am working on an image with mutiple layers. after I get to 15 layers when i add more the floating toolbar stops at 15 my layer is on my image and i can move it about but if I get to say layer 17 I am unable to select layer 16 to adjust.I dont want to put them in to layer groups (tried that and got in a right old mess!!!) just want to be able to see a list of all my layers maybe up to about 30 (for anyone curious about why so many they are elaborate letters to make greatings with so moving letters about to resize or repostion is important)

thanks in advance for any help

I seem to remember that PS has a 100 layer limit. If you aren't getting anywhere near that then more than likely it's a hardware issue such as limited memory. There are other programs that allow more than that but they don't have the animation capabilities of PS. One option would be to use Adobe's Premier Pro to create your animations. You can import your .psd files and still use the separate layers.

not sure what is causing your issue but i made a quick 30+ layers (see screengrab) - i'm thinking it may be a file size issue. How big is the working file? Down by the lower scroll bar there is a drop-down arrow that you can select to see a bunch of different stuff. I usually have mine set to view document size (this tellls me how big the working file is getting)

also do you have the AUTO-SELECT option (in the top tool bar) selected for Layer?  that helps me to quickly select the layer i want to work on regardless where it is in the palette.

hope this helps, let me know

I would be surprised if its a memory limit as I have 32 GB system Ram and my graphics card has 6Gb of  Ram maybe theres a setting to adjust how many layers are shown , a bit like setting the undo levels , but I cant find it and googling the question tells you all about using layers what they do etc but not the bit I want to know

working document was only 934 M so not really that big having got plenty of RAM that should be fine sorry cant see wher to find the auto select for layers , just trying a new image now , ill see how this one goes
