Subject: Facial animation. Kinect to Poser characters

Facial animation. Kinect to Poser characters > I would like to capture facial mocap data to Poser 7 characters. I have Mac os x platform.

What kind of application do you suggest?

Kinect is now working on Mac. But I don't know if Motion builder is Mac compatible.

Berkel Kinect Pro is unfortunately made for Windows.

What is the way to go for it?

I'm not sure which Kinnect unit you wish to use. If it is the original one then forget it. Facial motion isn't captured. The unit does work for full body capture. I've worked with the original for a couple of years now. I do not have the new Kinnect on Xbox 1 so I cannot speak for that unit.

I do not know of a Mac version of any capture software using the Kinnect. The API and Dev Kits are out there so someone may make a port for Mac but as Kinnect works on a Win machine I wouldn't count on it.

I'll ask my Mac programer buddy if he has heard anything about this but I wouldn't hold my breath.

As an after thought could you use Poser's Talk Designer to get the animation you need if it is only facial?

Yes I could use the talk designer and that's what I'll do if there is no apps for

face mocap.  I've heard about Faceshift for MAC  but they take 800$ every year

The original Kinect with the USB plug on it is simply not hi-res enough for facial mocap. Sadly, even if it was; you need bones in the face to match the mocap data to. That's why I use the Talk Designer. It works with morph data. The new Kinect on the new Xbox One is supposed to capture facial data but again there is the matter of facial bones. I don't have a new Xbox so I cannot test with it.

As for my Mac buddy.... No help at all for those of us on real people wages. He suggested the same software as you found already.

I was thinking just to import a BVH file and assign the bones to the corresponding face morph for a special poser figure.   But it seems, life is not  so easy.   .....ok we keep the talk designer
