Subject: Reality 3 for Poser

is there any advantage with Reality 3 for Poser  with poser pro 2014?

Hello.

What is exactly that you are looking for?

The reason to use Reality is to achieve photo-realism with your Poser scenes. Reality exports your scene to LuxRender, which is a physics-based renderer. Firefly is a good renderer but is not physics-based. Because of this the light that it renders is not even close to physical light. LuxRender has exact simulation of light based on physics. The same is for the materials. For example, Glass is rendered by taking in account the thickness of the glass and its color. The result is that the light that come out of the glass is dimmer and of a different color than the light that enters that volume of glass. This effect produces high levels of realism.

Reality takes your Poset scene and it gives you access to all the physics-based materials of Lux. You can edit every parameter of those materials or simply accept the default conversion.

The result is to obtain images of high realism with minimum effort. Light also becomes predictable, because it works like light in the real world.

Hope this helps.

I think he was asking if there was an advantage to using Poser Pro 2014 with it, instead of, say Poser 9 or something.

Answer is no. PP2014 has content creation advantages of many sorts, but these are not additive to or alter your results from Reality 3, per se. You'll be just as happy with your Reality workflow and LuxRender images no matter which Poser you used to set up the scene.

In that case, actually there are advantages.

Poser 9 has a couple of bugs in the addons framework that cause issues with parenting/unparenting of objects when using plugins. Poser 10 with the SR3 fixes that issue.

Poser 10 also introduced subdivision via OpenSubdiv, Reality 3.1 supports it.

Cheers.

I appreciate the input but I am using poser pro 2014 for several weeks now. I am happy with it just as I was with poser pro 2012

I was considering Reality if there was any real advantage to it over poser renderer

for the price I will give it a try

Thank you. I just noticed your forum name. If you are a photographer then Reality will feel natural. Like with photo lights, if you make a light larger you get software shadows, while if you make it smaller it will produce sharper shadows.

If you have practice with photography Reality makes lighting predictable.

All the best.

:) Given your background, you might find the following interesting.

We know that an object is renamed, internal name, when it's parented to another object. The renaming is done by Poser but, in Poser 9/Pro 2012, was not communicated via the addons framework. As a result, any plugin that identified objects by their internal name, which is the only way, would end up loosing the connection. The same happens when you unparent the object.

The addons framework has an API version that your plugin can set. If it's set to the latest then Poser 10/Pro 2014 will send notifications of the object renaming and your plugin can do what it needs to do.

In Poser 10/Pro 2014 SM introduced OpenSubdiv. Unfortunately they didn't have the time to expose that to Python. With the addition of the SR3 there is access to the subdivided geometry which makes it possible to export subdivided geometry from plugins.

Hope this helps.

And yes, both things happened because Your Truly pestered SM until they said: "OK, OK, we will do it, now shut up, please!"

Fantastic. Yes that is the way.

Can I slide in here, I am sure Richard won't mind...

I have delayed and delayed getting reality only because I keep hearing that it is a very long proces, and keeps rendering until you are happy with the render. Also it is said to come up grainy, and I assume that is from not enough render time.

How long would a render normally run? Say 2 buildings and one figure with say a powerage costume (*since they are fairly complex)?

I am really not as patient as I should be. For me a 4-6 hour render makes me want to tear my hair out!

Thank you,
Ariana

Hi Ariana.

There is not way of giving you an estimate. The length of a render depends on the number of core that are in the machines, the size of the render, the amount of lights and the how the materials are configured.

LuxRender does not take longer than other high-end renderers. Times are similar to what Vue takes when configured in a similar way.

The point of using Reality and Lux is to achieve the maximum level of realism. It's about accuracy, not speed.

If you look for a fast rendering then I would suggest anothert solution but keep in mind that speed always, always, comes at the expenses of quality.

On the other hand LuxRender is free and Reality extremely low cost so there is no risk in trying it. This is not a one-way conversion. You retain your ability to render with Poser. You simply add another tool to your arsenal. A lot of people find it the optimal way of rendering.

Cheers.

Also, keep in mind that, while Lux renders, you are free to continue working on the next scene, something not available when using "naked" Poser :)

Cheers.

I have never seen a 'free' Lux render offered, if you go to the site it says to buy Reality for the plug-in. Now while I do appreciate all of your hard work Paolo, I am not rich, and $40.00 appx. is a lot for something I may or may not like. Sorry I am just being honest.

Plus I am not really good at calculating the program like others are... :(  I really wish that more people who use Reallity would say so, then I would be able to get a better idea of what can be acheived.

It's like Dean, who lists his renders as poser, but honestly he uses a high end expensive program to render. Not a poser render then. I think a Reallity gallery is called for so that we can see honestly what can be acheived and have them list the render settings and times as a requirement. Tha would be great!!! Maybe you can speak to Stacey about this ???

Thank you!
Ariana

Hi Ariana.

LuxRender is free, go to luxrender.net and you will be able to download it. No cost. Reality is sold here at 20% of which brings the price to $31.95.

The Reality gallery has been running for more than two years and you can find  alot of information there.

See http://reality-plug-in.deviantart.com

Hope this helps.
