Heyas Brycers,

I'm gonna start a new bryce series with planets etc. I posted earlier about some tutorials on doing this fun stuff but here's another WIP for what I'm wanting to put together as maybe a package of goodies.

This looks interesting.

I once did a render with a ship moving into a miasma of roiling red clouds, but can't reproduce it.

I only have a thumbnail of the original image, and my terrible attempts to duplicate it.

This is the thumbnail:

very cool clay!

Is this an open invitation to post a planet here?   I don't want to impose if that is not the intent.

clay ( ) posted Tue, 04 March 2014 at 12:44 PM

sure! everyone can post planets here, and if you would like, explain how you created it maybe?

Here's another new one, I started playing in the DTE again, so fun, anyways here's a still shot and I do have a 10 sec animation of it. This was just made for like a backdrop matte type thing where I'll add in some ships and SFX later. Also if in terested I can either post the planet's mat file for reference or some screen shots of the DTE, kinda don't have time to do vid tuts right now.

So some new news on this planet thinggy, I have a quick animation showing how the clouds can be animated etc, its a rough and needs tweaking, but it shows what ya can do, the animation only took about 2 hrs to render which isn't to bad on my old machine heheh. Again this is all bryce , I'm using 7.1 pro, but this should work in any version of Bryce as far as I know from 3 up.

BTW, this is only 2 spheres, 1 for atomospheric haze(outer ring) and the planet itself is only one texture:-)

Nice volumetrics on that first one, Clay!
And BTW, now I know where you hang when there's no Base Camp to hang around in

Not nearly up to Clay's standards but here is my attempt. 3 spheres: sphere 1 is mapped with an Apophysis fractal with a tad of bump and displacement added and set at fuzzy material; sphere 2 is duplicate of sphere 1 enlarged ever so slightly, rotated a bit and mat has transparency turned up; sphere 3 is even larger with surface atmospheric. I set to cylindrical spots opposite each other, one positive light the other negative.

Working on it...

I added a ship leaving the planet, but the ship was casting a shadow onto the planet, now I'm working on removing that.

However, I think the planet moving so fast is... well, a bit out of kilter with the ship.  I'll have to think about that one, it looks like my trees are too tall and are waving in the wind. At the moment it's rendering as is, but hopefully without shadow.

just set the planet mat and atmosphere mat to not receive shadows, play around with that.

Um... I've got bigger problems than that.

I've had a little play with your planet mat - and this is creating animation problems.  I turned it into a more desert like planet - not completely just more desert than it had - however, during the animation it keeps trying to revert to the original mat.  Even though I've gone through the mat lab and set the start and end keyframes to the new mat - it's still not right.

Also, I set the ship not to cast shadows (rather than the planet) and the ship's textures vanished. Weeeheee! Ain't I got fun!

I'll try it your way, see if that helps.

Try going into the advanced motion lab and delete all the keyframes except for the main rotaion, then set your keyframes again for the texture. Also make sure your "autokey" is turned off on the mainscreen timeline, other wise any little change you make will automatically have a keyframe added.

Oh and also I'm gonna try, if time permits, to get some city block type greebles done up in a seperate thing so when you are putting together an animation/editing a video you can do a transition to the planet surface etc etc. Here's a base untexturd sample. ( and yes I know you can get some of this stuff already)
