Subject: Time has come today...for new models

Hi, everyone.  Today began Daylight Savings Time (DST) in the US.  The practice of advancing our clocks ahead one hour means most of us lost an hour sleep today, but we gained an extra hour of daylight!  I love this time of year.  It means Spring is around the corner, and longer days are upon us.  Anyway, in the spirit of this idea, I spent the better part of today modeling some clocks.  I had some modern styles and designs in my head for some time that I wanted to get out, and well, they turned into these models, which I've also UV unwrapped, and will package as freebies in the next day or so.  Here's some **wireframe** previews of the models so far.

Hope you guys like them.  All three models were modeled and unwrapped, and took about an hour each to complete.  The UV process took about the same.  So total was roughly 6 hours this afternoon on these.  I'm debating on what kind of texturing I might do here, if any.  I might just offer them for use with procedural materials in whatever application you decide to render them with.  Although it might be fun also to paint some textures on them too.  What do you guys think?  I was considering that since they are of a modern design, their surfaces would mostly consist of metal, and white or black plastic, so I'm not sure what improvements texture maps would add.

Those look gorgeous! Just out of curiosity what do you model in?

great Lux, I really like the centre one.

I'm sure it was fun to unwrap those.  I also like the one in the middle, but the one on the right end is striking.  One thing I don't care for is the one on the left.  You are using quads to cap the ends of that cylinder, which is wasting polygons.  What the poly count on these?

Thanks, I really appreciate that.  I do all modeling, and most of my unwrapping, in 3dsmax; although sometimes I will do unwrapping with 3DCoat, if I need to save time.  The auto-unwrap feature in 3DCoat is just a massive timesaver on complex models.

Thanks, Mark.

Polycount for all 3 together is under 30k; they are relatively light meshes.  I always use quad cylinders where I can, unless I really need to worry about polycounts.  Yes, it may add unused polys to the model, and in flat areas might seem like a waste, but I believe it results in more predictable topology when you are redistributing the models, and you can't forsee what applications they will be used in.  Most apps deal with triangulation and ngons in different ways, with different algorythms, but quads are dealt with by most packages exactly the same.  No worry about how the software might triangulate the surface at render time, and no problems if the end user decides to add a level of subdivision for closeup rendering.  These models are all 100% quads, so if your package supports subD, you can hit these with a level of smoothing, and they should look perfect under even the most extreme closeup angles.  If I used tris, or worse, ngons, for the flat surfaces, then further subdivision wouldn't be possible without some edge issues and artifacts.

@**infinity10**, thank you!  I was looking for some inspiration at Zazzle and Allmodern, and found some incredibly unique wall clocks, so it was challenging to try and come up with something unique.

@aandbrendering, thankyou.  Yes, they were all modeled in 3dsmax.

The image above is a resized version of one of the production renders I made for the clocks (click image to enlarge).

Bloody ace render, mate!  I like the PVC look you gave the materials. Simple and realistic.  I see you added a red second hand to two of them.

Thanks!  I just submitted these to the freestuff area, and they should be available soon.

In the meantime, here are a few more production preview renders.

The models are now available for download in OBJ format from Freestuff, and other resource locations, like Turbosquid and Sharecg.  Thanks for all your input, guys.  I really appreciate the feedback.
