I can't myself comment which is better. I understand hex has a few additional whistles. Kixum our forum coordinator models things in Carrara http://www.renderosity.com/homepage.php?page=3&userid=41015 for his gallery. I have both and am going to be focusing mainly in Carrara. I also have 3d-coat (sculpting like zbrush but more affordable, has a home version).
That being said, Silo also hasn't had any updates but a number of people like it. Its on sale directly or through STEAM (steam is cheaper ).
I have done extensive modeling in Carrara. The spline modeler is a nurbs modeler but it has limits. It's not a full blown 3d spatial nurbs modeler.
For vertex modeling, hex is probably a better bet. It's a little more of a learning curve than C but it will do a nice job. There are a few extra very nice tools in Hex over C.
While C can do a lot of modeling with some patience and knowledge, as just a straight up modeler, I would opt for Hex first.
Vue can render some things better than C and C can render some things better than Vue. In their respective specialties, they both can bash out great results. However, if you've already laid out the coin for Vue, it will probably serve a lot of your needs.
While I am a hardcore C enthusiast, I would not recommend C unless you are rendering something that Vue struggles with.

HEx is light years ahead of Carrara as a modeler... Light years and its hasnt been upgrade for half a decade I think.
Plus if you have used Carrara you will feel right at home with Hexagons Bugs Crashes Freezes and idotic BS!
Goos luck.
But real HEX is a terrific modeler BUT you will have to learn to side step its crazy BUGGY landmines.
ONE NEVER LEAVE ANY OBJECT in DYNAMIC MODE! Are you will loose everything next time you go to open it.

I am considering on purchasing Carrara 8.5 Pro while it is on sale. However since I already own Vue 2014 Complate, I'll be using Carrara for modeling.
How does Carrara Pro 8.5 compare with Hexagon 2.5 for modeling. I think the nurbs tools and texturing in Carrara are better. At least based on what I read on the web...
Cheers
