@heddhead - set things as you advised but the problem still persists, although there does seem to be some improvement. Scratching my old bald head over this one! It has to be in the settings somewhere. I am using an MS USB dual receiver wireless mouse if it makes any difference. I had to putz with it in initial setup because the middle mouse button was set to "flip" the pages when clicked. It doesn't do this any longer. I am going to try a PS2 mouse to see if it makes any difference. Outside of that, I am open to suggestion...

I can only suggest that you get a mouse with user definable buttons ( for example some of the Logitec ones) then ascribe the rotate view function to one button alone while moving the mouse. Zoom in and out uses the scroll wheel and panning is achieved with the mouse button and shift key. This reduces confusion and allows much more flexibility. I gave up on using the scroll wheel button long ago as it had a tendency to scroll rather than click or vice versa when not wanted. Of course, you may prefer something else, just trying to help.
Speaking of which, you might already have your mouse buttons assigned as some hotkeys. Might want to check your mouse settings under the control panel (or Logitech menu).
It's possible you setup hotkeys on the mouse for some other software, but put settings on a global menu rather than a per-software menu.
As for something that might cause behavior like this in Blender? The one I could think of is "Auto Perspective" in prefs, if it's on try unchecking it.

I've finall gotten my new computer. The original thought when I had iy built was to make it very compatible with Blender. It is running Win 7 64bit and has an NVIDIA Quadro K2000 vid card.
When I downloaded and run Blender, I did as I always do and set it up w/ the preset 2.4 theme. It is very hard for me to see what is going on in the native interface because of the dark grey background. I had to tinker with things a bit and it is finally working as I wish.
My issue is this - I use a 3 button mouse. The scroll wheel should by rights rotate the obj when pressed when I am wishing to work on the bottom or top of the obj. Instead, whenI try using the scrollwheel to rotate, I get this:
The obj jumps way to the background where I can barely see it, let alone manipulate it. When I press numpad 1, it moves way forward, with the obj almost completely off the screen. Setting it back by rolling the scroll wheel to zoom fixes that...
I am sure it is in some setting I am overlooking. I am still learning Win 7 after many years running Win XP. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I can help an old man out?
TIA
C~
