Subject: OctaneRender for Poser

I bet they'll come with a 2.5 version in due time which will have more features, will be more stable, and will be much faster again. And a free upgrade to it. So...

But anyway, it's good to have the issue flagged.

Hi,

the hair and displacement mapping is a big big plus of the 2.0 release. Of course additional features mean some slowdown. Anyone doing software development will know that. There are additional conditionals to evaluate.

I was always missing the displacement feature in Octane, so I'm really really happy now.

Thanks a lot to Paul for making the plugin upgrade available so fast! I'll play with it this weekend.

Best regards,

   Michael

Some detail of the tail. The hair is dense. In Poser, I could often see the skin.

Really nice Michael.  I am still trying to fine the optimum settings for strand hair, but if the hair is thick enough, setting the opacity to < 1 looks good (0.8?).  Also, I think a glossy material for a high specular color, and an idex around 1.5.

Above is a link to a video showing the OctaneRender for Poser integration with HDR Light Studio.

The initial implementation will be in the next release of the Poser plugin (for Octane 2.05.1). The HDR Light Studio options in the plugin will only be available if you have HDR Light Studio installed. Initially you will need a license for HDR Light Studio, however Lightmap may consider releasing a Poser plugin only version of HDR Light Studio, which may be at a lower price, but it will be a few weeks before any info on this will be available. The plugin will also work with the demo version of HDR Light Studio (however you cannot render high quality HDR images or save the HDR Light Studio project).

Wow, this is amazing! :o  .... now I just want that plug-in, hehe.

On their website is says: "HDR Light Studio 4 – Complete Edition runs as a standalone application ..." ... does that mean, I don't need any of the software listed (Lightwave, Maya, C4D .. etc .. ) to use it with Octane (resp. the Octane Poser plug-in)?

wimvdb ( ) posted Sat, 02 August 2014 at 12:11 PM

No need for additional software: octane, plugin, poser and HDR Light Studio is all you need

ErickL88 ( ) posted Sat, 02 August 2014 at 1:47 PM

Great! Thanks for the confirmation, wimvdb

There has been an important update to Octane just released.  The two exciting changes are:
  1. Render pass output for lighting layers – this feature allows users to produce images for each render pass that constitutes an image such as reflections, refractions, normal, direct and indirect lighting, normals, material id, object id, SSS, wireframe, emitters, etc.

  2. Speed increase - people are reporting an effective render speed increase of 30% and greater.   This is achieved through some changes to the renderer, together with additional kernel controls.

The Poser plugin has been updated and released to include the above changes.

Big update for Octane!

  1. Out-of-Core Textures - so you can now use your CPU RAM to store texturemaps when rendering with Octane.  So no more "out of VRAM" issues when rendering large Poser scenes with Octane.

  2. Light Passes - so you can now assign a "pass id" to individual emitters, and render out a separate pass for each of those light.  Works awesomely well!  See http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Poser/?page_id=369 for details.

The previous release introduced Render Layers, so you can assign different figures/props to different layers, and render the layers separately - and even render shadows from one layer onto another.

 hi Paul,

great !! Downloaded, and will test soon. The Out-of-Core option solves some of my problems with textures not fitting in my 4Gb VRam, turning Octane into disk-swapping and forcing me to bring in a RAM disk to get performance back.

One small request: can you add version id's and eventually links / page refs in these Rendo posts, to help me find what I'm looking for? It took me some time in the OTOY forums to find out you were referring to the 2.21.0.40 plugin (Poser plugin forum, top post) requiring the 2.21 Octane Standalone (Development Build Release forum, top post).

None of it is in the Download section of my accounts yet, this hosts stable versions only.

Maybe it's just me, most Octane users are smarter (less dumb) I guess.

For the foreseeable future - the TEST builds of the Poser plugin are all at http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=42585.  If you subscribe to that thread - you should get an email notification each time there is a post.  You don't need to update your Octane Standalone version unless you are exporting from the Poser plugin into Standalone.

Timberwolf!  Awesome!  The nice thing is that you have a fast card (580) but it has a lot less VRAM then the Titans.  So "Out of Core" textures makes cards like yours much more appealing.
