Latest model/freebie, available soon.  This is a chair that was made by request, and I'm quite happy with the results so far.  I call it the **Sweet Heart Chair** (for obvious reasons), and was designed to compliment my bag chair, for the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday.  It's design was inspired by the Danish highback Lobster Chair by Lund & Paarmann, and classic Eames Lounge Chair by the Herman Miller furniture company.  I was originally going to create a footrest ottoman to accompany it (ala the Eames), but it's not likely now, as I'm pressed for time, and would like to release this object no later than tomorrow evening.  I'm moving forward to the unwrapping and texturing stage, unless I spot problems in the mesh, which I don't think will happen, or I decide to make last-minute topology changes; again unlikely, but something I almost always find myself doing.

Crits and comments welcome, as always.  The object is currently comprised of two sub-components; the cushion and the base, and weighs a modest 15,200 total polygons, all quads.  Both elements of the object started life as simple 8x8 grid planes originally (not boxes).  Done with polygonal subD modeling techniques, and a few modifier tricks, to get the "pouf" look to the cushion.  Roughly 3 hours modeling time, and probably about that long for the unwrapping and texturing, I would imagine.  Hope you like it.

Cool chair.  That's quad heaven right there.  Perfect topo.

Unfortunately, the weather and other factors have prevented me from meeting my self-imposed deadline for this chair, but I'm packaging it for redistribution today, and hopefully it will be available at various resource sites soon.  I wanted to have it ready for Valentine's Day, but I'm obviously a little late.  Here's a preview render of the chair and footstool (I decided to model one after the fact), showing the 3 different color textures that will come with it.

Here's a weapon called a "brass orchid" I made in Hexagon for a series of renders based on novel.  It wasn't used in a close up so I didn't get too detailed with it.

Another chair.  This one was requested by someone on DA; a comfy swivel chair concept.  The modeling is complete.  Unwrapping and creating textures now.

lunarium ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2014 at 4:39 PM

I'm a total noob here. I'm working on a lunar globe project and need help putting together a detailed 3D model of the moon.

Looking to put together a team or find some motivated 3D gurus to make this happen :)

here's the long version

I'm working on a project to create a cast aluminum globe of the moon, something on the order of 21-24 centimeters in size, that uses data from the LRO to create a highly accurate reproduction. This would be a kickstarter project similar to the 3D lunar map (http://www.wired.com/2012/02/3d-moon-map/).

I've had conversations with a number of metal fabrication companies and they've requested a 3D model (sldprt, igs or stp preferred) of the moon in order to send a price quote - this is a critical element for moving the project forward. I've had conversations with a number of people at JPL and NASA and they've been very supportive, but I need help getting the existing data (see links below) into a file type that the metal fab companies can work with.

I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount for someone or a team to help make this happen. Please let me know if you're interested in this job, how long you think it would take and what you think it would cost.

Thank you,
Chris

Wireframe view of a set of woodworking tools I just released as freebies. Had been modeling and texturing them for a personal project, and felt others may find them useful.

Nice looking set of tools LuxXeon. The geometry is clean and efficient. I always aprieciate it when the wires are shown. It's educational to see other modelers work. Good stuff. :) Nice texturing too.

Thank you very much.  Yes, I feel it's always important to show the topology of any free or commercial products, as certain topology may not be compatible with all render engine technologies, or allow for easy modification, if that need arises.  I appreciate the feedback, and I hope others find the models useful in some way.

Excellent materials.  Can you show the wires?  Are the folds and wrinkles modeled in, or created with displace/normal maps?  Great stuff.
