I justy purchased the upgrade offer to Poser Pro 2014.  I got the link to the download wizard and downloaded and installed everything, and then I got to thinking........

Usually I have downloaded zips for all the other poser versions I have, and when I went looking for all the sections I downloaded and installed I can't seem to find them. I always like keeping them on my external harddrive so if my main computer goes I have everything backed up elsewhere.

Does anyone in the store know where these files go after I download them or do they just download right from the net somewhere and I don't get a backup to save if there are problems?

Any help would be appreciated in knowing either where they are stored or where to access them again if needed?

I'd be very interested in the answer to this too. The Poser Pro 2014 Upgrade is really tempting, but I have several concerns, of which PAnn's point is one I hadn't even thought of!)

With SM's 'download only valid for 30 days', having your own backup of a 'digital download only' product is absolutely essential!

Edit: Just noticed on the SM Poser Upgrades page it says...

"...You will be able to select from the full set of Poser installers for the version you've purchased, monitor download progress, pause and resume your download, designate where you'd like the installers saved on your computer..."

...so I guess PAnn's installers should be in the default location,wherever that is? Confirmation required from somebody who knows for sure though!

On the link I got in my order. it leads to an installer which when downloaded gives you a clickable link of the numerous items to download. When you click install on the first one  it lets you choose where to install it.  Then when all the rest are downloaded, the button changes from download to install as well. Then it installs with where do you want it as well.  . My problem is where does it rest between download and install and does it disappear afterwards or is it hiding somewhere.

Maybe the store personnel can tell me how to download and not install?

Or maybe there is a way to download zip files instead so I have at least some assurance my money may not be wasted if problems unsue.

I just like having the files in case of computer problems or incase of programme problems where you might have to start over and re-install Poser itself because of inner glitches.

The download manager save the .exe files that are downloaded to install poser into a folder on your computer. If you would go to C: drive then Users then your name, then SmithMicroDLM, then Downloads/Content/Win (windows on mine as I downloaded the windows version. If you downloaded the Mac version look for Mac folder. ;) The .exe files in this folder can be saved in a backup. Also, if you have already installed the program you can find all files that have been installed in that same file path Downloads/Installed.

I found a content file with the 8 content files in an .exe version  that were all 1KB each

Then I looked in the installed and found the Poser Pro2014 and the 8 content files in an application format all totalling up to 5.29 GB.

So if God forbid I had to reinstall, do these two files work together and everything I need would be on my computer in this folder?   And if I wanted to copy over to my external hard drive, would I copy this whole folder with all the items.

I will admit I love using my computer but not too swift with all the intricate workings as to how it lets me do what I want to do .

ok I'm dyslexic and have been trying to understand all this downloading stuff...while asking WHY I should get 2014 pro... I JUST found out it is the ONLY TRUE 64 bit version of Poser!! (and as I upgrade my computer FOR graphics I want the best Poser!!)  but I normally buy from Smith Micro direct... where I understood my (then) Poser 9 download only was AlWAYS there to download (in HUGE files) directly from them, in my account...

I want to use a sale...but the page says ONE file of 17 mb ....

AND NO EXPIRATION DATE ON THAT PAGE???? How long do I have to sort out what I feel is best for me to do??

I've asked a couple of related questions on the "June POSER Sale Continues - Upgrades now added" thread in the Community Centre forum. In response TinaK has said that it's digital download only, downloads will be from the SM site, and they should be available indefinitely - provided you have your registration key.

The new 'download manager' seems to be a change at SM (check their 'upgrades' page here http://poser.smithmicro.com/poser10-poserpro2014/#upgrade where it says...

"*Serial Number Required. After purchase, you will receive a link to download the Smith Micro Download Manager. Once this small utility is installed on your computer, the Download Manager will let you manage the download of your Poser application installer as well as all support and content installer files. You will be able to select from the full set of Poser installers for the version you've purchased, monitor download progress, pause and resume your download, designate where you'd like the installers saved on your computer, and launch your Poser installation. "

...so I guess that even if you bought digital download direct from SM you'd still have the same issue PAnn's talking about.

(P.S. I'd guess that the17.46MB download is the Smith Micro Download Manager?)

I recently purchased full copy of Poser 2014 Pro from SM and the process seems to be the same or at least similar,

 - Download and install the download manager.

 - Start the download manager and input the serial you rec'd when you purchased the program. The install manager connects to SM website and downloads list of all installers available for your serial - For full version of PP 2014 Pro, this gives the main proggie, the qeue manager (do NOT confuse with the download manager - this is to help in doing parallel rendering) and the various content packs.

 - For Pro version, you are also provided PowerFusion plugins which help in using Poser data with 3D creation apps (3ds max, maya, lw, c4d). To download plugins, start the install manager and input the serial (I had input 3ds max serial and got the list containing plugins for the remaining 3 apps)

 - Install the apps directly or by choosing install from the download manager and enjoy!

NOTE: For backup, you have to do the following additional steps,

 - Determine the path where the installers are downloaded (the path is shown at the bottom of the download manager). Hovering you mouse over individual download entries in the manager also shows path to the individual file. This is same as the path jennblake has mentioned in their earlier post and NOT some new info :-)

 - Once you have located the download path as above, you may want to backup the SmithMicroDLMDownloads folder and its sub-folders, as additional files here are used by the download manager in case you wish to install/reinstall through the download manager interface.

Hello everyone. :) Yes, the download manager is what is downloaded from your account here, and you are given your serial number. The actual files are hosted on the Smith Micro website and the process is the same whether the program is purchased here or directly from Smith Micro. So please feel secure in being able to access those files as normal. :)

The eight small 1K files are placed there to allow the downloader to know what version of file you have.  That way it can check to see if your files are up to date or if a newer version is available to download.

The eight larger files are the actual program and content.  They are the same files you would have received if you purchased a boxed set (actually the box set would probably be out of date and need to be updated).  You can run each of the files whenever you like and it will take you through a setup wizard.  The best one to start with would be the program file since that will set your default install location.

You can and probably should backup those files so just in case you need to reinstall you do not have to get them off the web.  Which can be slow depending on where you are.
