Okay, I have not been using Poser on a regular basis because as beautiful as it can make models and charaters, it drives me to the brink of pulling my hair out.

1.) Getting hair properly FITTED - being able to SEE that it is in Poser before rendering is maddening! Help?

2.) When I do have it on, it renders looking NOTHING like is should. It's thin, wispy, and see thru. Help?

3.) Character skin - or rather th brows - makeup looks patchy instead of smooth. The brows don't like as they should nor the make up.

4.) The character looks blurred instead of sharp, with clarity and clearness.

Part of the above has to do with render settings. I have tried different ones but I always end up regretting wasting time because I can't use what I render. Please help me STOP from closing Poser and running back to Daz Studio. I LOVE both programs - but there are vendor items that I wish to use that DOES NOT work in Daz Studio.

Therefore, in order to use them, I MUST use Poser. I'm tired of leaving it in frustration - please help?

others will say this as well....it's your gamma settings. If you use gamma correction in your render, and you should, you need to set transparency maps to a gamma of 1.0. If you don't they will look whispy like that is affects bump maps as well so they ned to be set to 1.0 too.

you click on the image scource like you are changing the image map, that is where you get the pop-up for changing gamma.

What version of Poser are you using?

Try changing your element display style. Select the hair object and then go to your Document Display Style pallet. Click the arrow beside it and select Element Display Style. Then select a display style that lets you see the object better. Hair usually has transparency maps and they don't always show very well in full textured preview. So going to smooth shaded or wire frame can help.

If there hair is made for the figure you're using, then it should adjust on its own with the head shapes that you use.

There is a series of tutorials here:

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/tutorial_premium/index.php?page=info&tutorial=10

but they are for Poser 10/2014. Most of the same techniques will still apply for rendering if you're using P7 or higher. There are also dozens of tutorials on lighting and rendering here in the tutorials section.

ETA: Gave the wrong link before. Sorry about that. The link above now goes to the Materials tutorial.

The pointblank question is which Poser version are you using?  Before dispensing the correct advice we need to address which application.  Any version not labeled as Pro or Poser 10 will not have gamma correction as a render option, therefore you will not find any features to set in the image map node.

If the hair piece is found under figures then it is a conforming wig which should be used for the character it was created for.  Unfortunately, if there is no cross fit available, you will need to manually manipulate the hair to the head and parent it so it follow the head when posing.

Now it the texture appears blurry, you either set the filtering to crisp if you are using the most current Poser version or none for older.

I'm sorry I thought I stated that,  Poser 10.

For all this to work

Ya need a realtime NVidia 3D Card.
with http://render.otoy.com/
a realtime render engine.

oh it's for DAZ & Poser so ya have the same render engine in both apps :)

OH - I see now why no one knows what version of Poser I was using, THEY a mod TOOK IT out of my subject title - which I don't get - least they could have done is if they were going to shorten it, to KEEP the revelant information.

sigh There is like 3 OTHER Help subjects - Reason I PUT my need IN the subject. Good grief!

Will this one due? nVidia Geforce GTX760 2GB GDDR-5 ACX? And simply put, I'm not at all sure what you mean?

Yeah, it always pays to be specific about your questions.

And ghostship2's answer is perfectly valid.  P10 is the first non-pro version to have gamma correction in it's render settings.

Interesting discussion!  Howdy, M.  Long time no "see."  Thanks for asking the question.

Sorry, no, I didn't take it out of your thread title. There's no reason for me to do so and no other mod would have either. I just edited your title to add in Poser 10 tho.

That would be a great card. Better than what I have.

Can't find exactly how to get to that. I've tried but I don't think it was the right place, well I know it wasn't because the hair is still see thru. sigh

That's the card I have, but I cannot afford that render plugin - doesn't Poser have installed all that I need?

You don't need octane to get good renders out of Poser. You just have to learn the materials and lighting, and that can be a challenge so it just takes practice to achieve the look you want. Become friends with the material room. I linked to a video tutorial about the material room in P10/2014 up above in my first post.

To change gamma on the transparency maps, click on the eye in the top right corner of the transparency map node (in the materials room, with the hair selected), to expand the node and see all the info in it. Then click the word in white to the right of where it says 'image source:' .  A dialogue will pop up with the option to browse for a different image and gamma is at the bottom of that dialogue. Don't change the image, just check custom gamma and set it to 1.00

ETA: Sorry - correction, click the min/max button just to the left of the eye icon in the top right of the trans node. The eye will show the trans map (if there is one), the min/max button will expand or collapse all the values in the node.

Site Admin Online Now!

If you're rendering using gamma correction at 2.2 (the default) save your scene first and then go to the drop down menu Scripts - Material Mods - Change Gamma.  Enter a value of 1, Select "all props and figures" hit OK, select "all of the above" and OK once again.   Be careful not to select all materials because you only want a gamma of 1 on transparencies, bumps, and displacements and this scripts does it all much more quickly than doing it manually in the material room.

Bring your figure onto the stage, then go into the Material room. Grab the Eyedropper tool and click on a body part/hair/etc/material you wish to alter...

To change the map you will click on image source (see attached)

Once that is done you have the option to change the Gamma value for that image map and/or change out that map too (see attached)

In your Render settings you will see a box for Gamma Value, set that to 2.2

For all of your image maps the default value is already set to 2.2, for all of your bump, displace, transparency/etc maps you want to set those to 1. Why? Because you are telling Poser in your renders settings to make everything gamma 2.2 but you don't want grey/black/white value maps being adjusted to 2.2, you want those to stay at 1.

Hope this helps. 😄

when you put <!--  in an html line, it will comment out (invisibile in most browsers).  it don't comment out in these text boxes, as they're preformatted.
