Subject: Newbie Poser Pro 2014 user question

I have used Poser 7 the most, and Poser 9 a little. I upgraded to Poser Pro 2014 with the offer here.

I am trying to experiment as much as possible but there is one thing I can't figure out.

I use the FK lights most of the time for my trials and when I use them in Poser 7 and 9 they look great as you prepare the figure, and look nice and bright even when you render.

Now I am doing the exact same thing in 2014 and then when I render, the image is about 5 times darker than what I started out with.

Should I be doing something different or is there something new that I should be doing that I am not.  I have adjusted the light strength but they still turn out dark and unusable.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I printed out the light chapter just before I wrote this so will read it and see if I get help, but I can't figure out what is going wrong...........

Can it be so simple that the gamma correction is ticked in the render settings?

Plus older light setups for earlier poser versions usually have to be fiddled with.

For starters, here's some links to some must-have props, both by Bagginsbill, our shader guru.

The first one is for his environment sphere. IDL works best if your scene is enclosed in an enviroment sphere (especially if you are wanting realistic looking glass, water, and metals).

Second link is for BB's handy dandy, don't-render-without-it, light meter prop. Its a disc shaped prop with the center shader set up to measure the level of diffuse light in your scene, and the outer rim detects specular light. If either or both are yellow or red, then your lights are blown out too bright.

Light meter is in his file cabinet and is the third item on the list. While you are there at his site, explore the whole thing to read and collect shaders he has created and given to the community.

I don't know what FK lights are but I suspect they have gray color chips, not white. These are affected by your chosen gamma setting.

This does not mean gamma is a bad thing - it's a good thing. It's those gray light color chips that are the problem. 

The intensity of a light source should generally not be determined by an sRGB value, but that is what was done quite often. Now that those are being converted to linear values they change meaning.

Lights should only have a color chip value if the light has a color. Otherwise, the color chips should be white and intensity should be determined by the intensity number dial, not the color chip brightness.

Fabi is how I know her - I didn't know her initials. And having identified the abbreviation, I still can't say what her lights are like. Or anybody but mine, for that matter. I stopped using other people's lights in 2006.

Thanks for the tips and links. I have downloaded what was suggested, I have saved some of your comments and in all reality, you people don't really understand when I said newbie, I meant it.  I did fine with just the basics in 7 and 9 but when I read suggestions in here, I do have to go find out later what some of the things you say actually mean.

The FK I stated was the Fabiana Mild Boreal and I used her metre high set for Mavka. With those I did fine and never really learned what all the other terms were.  I don't use Poser as much or as in such a complicated form as most of you do - I use beginner stuff but can see I will be learning a lot more now than I ever forced myself to learn before. I sit and read these forums and am in awe of all the stuff you know about the programme that I have never even heard off. I guess in my retirement I got comfortable with doing okay with my basic stuff but now will need to expand.

Please, as much as I love your advice and help, don't get more complicated than what you did here. I will go off now and see about the link offers and read up and learn about what help you already gave me. I watched the lighting tut here twice and will now go re-read the lighting chapter from the programme manual I printed out.

 

I did post a couple of simple portrait  images to my gallery that I did with Poser Pro 2o14 but then I had to take them into CS4 and lighten them up drastically to get them to where I wanted them to be.

First thing I am off to see what that gamma correction is and see what happens.

Thank you all again for giving me a starting point on this journey through 2014. I guess now I change from retired teacher to active student.   Have a great day to all of you.

I went and tried the gamma and no gamma check in the box.  That did make a big difference so maybe it was checked in the auto settings and I didn't know what it was and just left it.. I posted two quickie samples I just tried.

The first is with the gamma checked and the second without.  I still will be carrying on with all your hints but at least I can start with a better look than I was getting.

Exactly. It's fine to use content (shaders, lights) tuned for use in non-gamma capable Poser. Just turn it off in your copy as you did.

If/when you want to try out "linear workflow" (with gamma enabled) you have the option.

Hello people, Bruce, Bagginsbill and PAnn :)

YEP I was going to post here that the Gamma correction was what was turning your redner soo dark when I readed you solved the trouble. I find that IMHO the gamma correction in general for the whole scene is not my taste.

Please let me know if you need some other tip on rendering with these light.

And Bagginsbill, if you ever want to test my lights, I will be more than pleased to make them go to your folders :D
