Subject: Internal code of Bryce job and object etc files

Has anyone yet managed to decode the internal code format of Bryce job and object and material etc files?, to let outside people write utilities to work on Bryce objects etc.

Bryce would be awesome if it had an SDK.

Yup, If DAZ could ever be convinced of doing anymore work at all on "furthering" Bryce it should be an SDK, period.

I suspect that Bryce .OBP / .BR5 / etc files are encrypted. What we need is a way to decrypt and re-encrypt them so people can directly access and change the information stored in them, like people can easily do with Poser .CR2 etc files.

Oh yeah, encrypted.

Closest I saw to tweaking with Bryce was many years ago when I beta-tested a little piece of translation softyware for a Rendo user that he created that let me transate a Poser light rig for use into Bryce. It was a little rough but it worked. (he decided to not release it for some reason)

But, something that would allow users to create plugins and/or add-on software? Ah, man that would be the holy grail.

A large part of Bryce is written in Axiom, a sort of intermediate code that works for the Mac and the PC at the same time. This Axiom composite file management system was developed by Andrea Pessino at MetaTools in the 1990ies. The code is proprietary. Without it being opened, no plug-ins can be developed. This legacy is also the main hindrance to port Bryce to 64-bit.

Someone needs to have a serious 'talk' wit dis Andrea Pessino jerk den eh? Seems he's the blockage that needs exlaxing....64 bit would be very nice for starters.

I don't think he would be of any help. Corel got the code at the time, now DAZ has it but since it is proprietary, they must not make it public. 64-bit was attempted for Bryce 7.0 but abandoned because it would have grossly overrun the budget.

  • Must Not? Why? Are you saying Daz owns Bryce but not the code? (or, maybe I specifically mean the Axiom code structure?)

I mean, Andrea Pessino had moved on from Bryce a long time ago. YEARS ago, I had found his name in a codedump I made from Bryce 5.0 file, I tracked him down, emailed him and he had nothing really to say about Bryce other than it was (at that time) all up to Corel and he had nothing to do with Bryce at all anymore. So...?

BTW, he's now co-founder and CTO over at Ready At Dawn Studios, they're coming out with that game "The Order". Ya know, he's got a readily accessible Facebook page...;o)

@AgentSmith - thanks for that additional information. I think (though I don't know) that the deal was to not make Axiom public. Of course, each coder that has worked on Bryce since MetaCreations sold it has seen that code.

@The Bryster - Worthless? I have no idea, really, just didn't sound like he was holding on to it, from his email.  :o

@BryceHoro - Bummer if that IS the case, to never make the Axiom code public, even in part. I suppose only DAZ could state for sure one way or another.

What I and likely many others are after, is the internal format of Bryce .OBP etc files including what bit and byte means what like is readily available with many 2D graphic file formats such as .GIF, and with Poser .PZ3 file format.
