Is it still possible to use on modern computers?  Can the computers be modified so it will work correctly?

SAMS3D ( ) posted Wed, 02 July 2014 at 8:35 PM

It has no issues as far as I know, cause I use it still today even though I have 9 and 10.

hborre ( ) posted Wed, 02 July 2014 at 10:05 PM

What do you mean by modern computers?  PC or MAC?  Desktop or laptop?  Or tablet? Which iteration of Windows OS?  Which iteration of MAC OS?  32- or 64-bit?

You were not very specific with your question, but, for the most part, I do not know of any serious issues between Poser 8 and "modern computers".

No, on the newer computers it doesn't work.  Even an email from Smith Technologies confirms this.  However, maybe some modifaction on newer computers would make it work.  Somehow, internet explorer updates or something like that makes Poser 8 unworkable.

IE 11 is the culprit

I use my poser 8 on my Windows 7 Pro, I installed it on my c drive, not in the programs files area, and yes it did not work with one of the updates, but it is working now after a fix from flash.  So I am using it quite well with Win 7, IE 10, and the newest flash as of today.

Nightwind ( ) posted Thu, 03 July 2014 at 5:27 AM

Poser 8 and PP2010 do not work with the OS Mavericks. I had to set up a separate drive so I could continue to use them under SnowLeopard.

Right, but Win 7 IE 10 is not modern.

Windows 8.1 requires IE 11 - can't run with IE 10. End of life for Poser 8.

Do versions of Poser prior to 8 run on Windows 8.1?  I still have a strange fondness for Poser 7, perhaps because I have some Python scripts that only work in Posers 7 and 8.  It would be nice to know just how much I should hate Microsoft, as some inevitable upgrade to Windows 8 looms in the future....   Will all Poser history be lost to us, or just older versions which use the Flash library?

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

Any time we want to - we can write a new library for Poser 8. The entire library runs by sending messages - any application could do it.

I think Poser 5, 6, and 7 would probably run on Win 8.1 - but I have no interest in trying it.

Poser 8 works great with Windows 7 if you don't install IE11.  It ran okay for me with IE10 and updating Flash.  It's supposed to work with Windows 8, but I know from experience it doesn't work in Windows 8.1 because the OS uses IE11.

If anyone is using Poser 8 and Poser 2014 is there a free character pak set from Poser 8 available to use in registered users of Poser 2014? I saw a very cool Chubacapra dog figure based on the Poser 8 dog over at 'Rotica I gotta have but If I can't get the P8 dog I am SOL!

WandW ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2014 at 7:23 AM

Is the Poser 8 dog different from the one in PP2014?

Taking a quick look, the P8 dog is different than the PP2014.

Windows 7 should be supported until 2020 so you have time to see what devils pop out of Microsoft's rectum.

I am not against 8.1 just strongly prefer 7.  I do like the Metro look but the OS can be skinned, so not a huge biggie for me.  I don't give a flying sh-- about Apps.

When I had 8.1 running, I was able to run Poser 7 (just to see if I could).  If anything doesn't seem to run, try Windows XP mode, Service Pack 2.

Yeah.

Though never used 8, having just gotten 2014 to take advantage of the special price, on my 15 inch macbook laptop the interface for P7 seems more streamlined to me. too many functions in 2014 not used to yet and on a smaller screen not very time eficient tool accessability-wise. But one thing I do like is it's quickly apparent power. At 64bit it uses all my RAM and proessor powers more effectively and that is great.

One other thing i have to ask here, is there supposed to be a copy of Teri Yukai and/or Miki in 2014. I did a search and it did find some info on these two figures but when i tried accessing them via the character tab within P2014 there was no indication of their presence in my runtime.

hborre ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2014 at 2:16 PM

No.  They are separate models from CP and are not for free.

shante ( ) posted Mon, 14 July 2014 at 3:06 PM

what about that poser 8 dog in P2014

bagginsbill ( ) posted Mon, 14 July 2014 at 3:23 PM

This page at SM has legacy content for some versions but not Poser 8.

http://poser.smithmicro.com/content_update.html

When they make new versions sometimes they don't include some old stuff. For those that want the old stuff, they go get one of those "legacy" content files.

I see legacy content for 5, 6, and 7. I do not see one for 8.

This can be for one of four reasons:

  1. no content was dropped from 8 to 9 or 10

or

  1. Smith Micro forgot to make a legacy Poser 8 content pack

or

  1. Smith Micro forgot to publish the legacy Poser 8 content pack

or

  1. Smith Micro does not want you to have the Poser 8 content if you got Poser 9 or 10

Whether or not your dog falls in to case 1, 2, 3, or 4, I have no idea.

thanks for clarification.

i guess the only smart thing to do is go right to the source with this and get the answer right from the "horse's mouth".  :)

I do have poser 9 still in the box just never installed. so the hope is poser 8 stuff was added to P9 so i can get it from there.

thanks BB.

I have three dogs in my PoserPro2014 installation.

Two are in Runtime:Character:Animals:Pets

One is in Runtime:Character:Animals:Poser Originals

This is the old Poser4 dog.

This is what I did to get Poser to run well in Linux. The problem was the poser library manager that uses flash. I ended up developing a library manager where you link promo images to the models so that you can search and explore fullscreen images and then load the models from there.

Feel free to try out the demo!
