Subject: Static clothes to dynamiic clothes

jamminwolf ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2014 at 6:19 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:40 PM

Ok guys, was in discussion with folks about static vs. dynamic clothes, and I remembered that I exported some static clothing as obj and there were rules of thumb to follow to do it correctly, in order to use as dynamic.

Can someone refresh my mind on exactly what to do, step by step, exporting and importing?  Or is there a site where this lesson is given?  I'm gonna book mark that in case I forget again, this is a great tool to use for Poser, and one of the reason I quit using DS.

I know it's a bit of hit and miss for the most part, depending how the clothes are made, but I'm desparately searching for bikini top and bottom dynamic clothes but failed... so I'm wanting to export/import some to use.

Also, does anyone know where we can get dynamic swimwears?

It make clothes dynamic you can export and import an object. Use the default check boxes for the export and the import only check make polygon normals consistant. That should get you the correct size prop. You can also try this script here. Works great.

in my understanding, there is no need to turn a figure into a prop. But I like to be educated...

Cloth Room only expects a "single sided well welded" mesh to work on, and in some cases re-importing just makes that little difference. But when it's a good piece for start, the same thing can be dynamic and conforming. In the sim animation, the dynamics results will just overwrite the results from the conforming.

One thing though: dynamic clothes needs some space between the clothing and the figure (collision offset etc) while in a lot of cases, the conforming clothes are just too tight for that and has to be widened a little bit.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though

Mostly, no; but it does depend on how the clothes were modelled. Some don't have their groups welded, and in that case, exporting with 'Weld body part seams' checked will fix it.

Often, vendors don't make details such as pockets, buttons etc. part of the mesh, in which case they will slide off when simulated. You can usually add them to the soft- or hard- decorated groups which will make them 'stick' to the underlying mesh.

However I have seen some clothes modelled in separate pieces (cough well-known Japanese vendor cough) and while these work fine as conforming clothes, they'll fall apart in the cloth room unless you join the bits back together in a modeller. When it gets to that stage I usually think I might as well make my own damn clothing. ;) Then again, some older clothing was modelled with closed end caps which intersect the figure and won't simulate at all. The only solution here is to remove the caps; PhilC has a tutorial on that at his site.

In other words, there is no single method. You have to take each item on its own merits.

To import or export an item into Poser, simply look under Poser's "File" menu. You will see two selections there. One for "Import" and one for "Export".  I don't really feel like rewriting the whole thing so if you really need more info on Poser's Import and Export functions the chapter is in Poser's Reference manual (which thankfully, does come with Poser) and it's in Chapter 34: Using Poser with Other Applications.

lol... I hit "ignore" on you by mistake eclark (but click to unignore you), they really should move that button somewhere else far away from the "quote" button haha.

I know where Poser's "export/import" menu is, I just needed the step by step instructions to export and import things to properly use for dynamic clothes.  I believe you meant chapter 32, not 34. I'll have to look into that, but I want specific directions as to how to export things and import them for using as dynamic.

But anyways, the script link was given above, thanks RedPhantom!  It works.  But so far I'm noticing 3DAge's clothes & some others just doesn't work right as far as trying to dynamic them, or Poser just closes down on me, I'm thinking maybe 'cause there are movement morphs in it?  I'm not sure what I should click when I load this script... use original geometry or not?  Use modified geometry?  scratches head

I'll have to study this a bit more, but I would like to still have a step by step drecting me to properly export/import clothes specifically for dynamic use.

I use the default settings. Use modified geometry and ignore parented props are the 2 that are checkked. Also any body parts that are hidden, like body handles that you won't want in your prop won't transfer.

Well, I did copy that title directly from my reference book for PP2014.

"I know where Poser's "export/import" menu is, I just needed the step by step instructions to export and import things to properly use for dynamic clothes."

Not sure this answers your question, but when i do it, and its a "true" dynamic cloth object, i turn off all settings in the export and import menu.

And always as OBJ format, and makes sure that the cloth fit the default pose of the character im using. So im sure that i always have a clean piece of cloth as a backup.

If i need to make changes to the character like increasing size, i simply do that in another frame, calculate the cloth and export it in the frame i like.

Then ill delete the object and move all the changes that i made to the character to frame 1, and import the cloth that i just exported. So it will fit the modified character in frame one.

A good idea is to save your material settings for the cloth item first to the library, even though it should apply them when you import it again. Some of the settings might not be correct, so you simply apply the material again from the library and then you can use the item as normal with all the changes saved into it as default.
