Subject: Head models

So quick question for you guys and gals. If you could have just a head model (let's say head to shoulder area) would you use that? Like if it were very detailed and also had the same amount of polys you'd find in a full figure, would that be something you'd be into? I've been wondering about this for about a year now. I think it's safe to say the bulk of Poser renders are head shots anyway, right? Or am I misjudging things?  I did a render in Poser of a head scan I bought (with a spec map I made myself) and a co-worker wondered if it was rigged, which reminded me to ask this. So what do you think? Interesting idea or just stick to full bodies?

I see there's some reluctance to reply. So, here's the Poser render I was talking about. So something like this -  though lower res (this model is 3million polys, we're talking 50K-100K). Hopefully this will illustrate what I was thinking.

Me, personally, I like full bodies. But based on alot of what I see in the gallery, I maybe an oddball. Of course most renders there seem to be 1 maybe 2 people while I no problem putting  a half dozen or more into the scene, well no propblem until render time.

I could see a use for those though too. Pose some clothes, add a head. Much lower memory. May need hands too.

That's kind of what I was thinking too. Like the head and hands can be loadable figures, having bones and morphs of their own. Seems plausible. Was thinking maybe this weekend I could test the theory but wanted to see if it was even worth it.

I don't mind doing the occasional headshot but just like my photography, I prefer the body to be included in the expression of my renders.

I don't want to sound rude but I think that there are so many face framed shots around because it's much harder to pose the complete package yet at the same time facial only renders can be a very tough sell that either look astonishing or very bleh. I would however, be interested in using high poly shoulder up models as long as they're fully rigged and the expressions are thoroughly realistic.

Not rude at all. I am not under the delusion that Poser is perfect. Personally, given a large budget and a bigger team of programmers and artists, I'd start over from scratch, kill backwards compatability before the new version and move forward with new code. That's me and my personal opinion though (always been of the mind backwards compatability holds us back). I can understand where you're coming from. Easier posing and better expressions are definitely important. So far it sounds like it'd be a neat idea but not something folks are clamoring for. So maybe I'll just try it out on my own instead of pitching the idea. Just couldn't make up my mind. Thanks gang.

If the new gaming version of Poser Pro is going to be able to weld together cloths and figures and remove hidden polygons then having a high resolution head would be a good thing.  It may not fit the " normal style of poser renders " but it would be welcolmed in  areas where you would only see heads and hands of people such as when wearing business suits, uniforms, etc.

Ideally it would be based on a sub divided head of a figure such as Rex and Roxie, so that you would be able to attach it to the proper body subdivide the body to match the head and be able to use it as a nude.  Or if there is a way to blend in the head to a body and remove the seam.

Another nice to have feature would be to have a full body rig so that you could conform cloths to the "body" so that you would not have to go to two or more locations to move the body parts of the cloths to pose them.

instead of just a highly detailed head mesh think I would go with some
killer displacement maps from head to toe for Rox & Rex highly detailed face ,body everything.

I think I would have little use for just a head and shoulders type figure unless there was a lower resolution version with full body.  I do a lot of portrait renders in an attempt to portray some emotions but I use the same figure in wider setting where I want full body but for the character to be recognisable as the same character in the portrait.

 

 

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -  Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB  storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .   The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.

     Teyon, I can see those being useful for resource-efficient "hero prop" portraiture, and also to use with an armored body (medieval knight, HALO Spartan) to give variety of characters.

I would want a head product to add to a body I already like, but would use the whole character after that.  Such a product would be like a partial pose to change the face and not a new character/figure of its own.

Example:  I have no interest in a lot of the Victoria character products because I don't want to pay for body morphs and textures I don't like/would probably never use just to get a face I would use otherwise - sell me the face and let me put it on a body I already like and plan to use a lot.

Yes, I know I can change faces (and everything else) with dials and w/e, but a) my morph dials locked up on the figure I use most (random bug and known issue) and b) most charater pakages for sale here are full figure with a new face.  Pthb

The Marketplace does not allow anything to be listed for less than $5.00 US, but I would pay that for a new face if I liked it enough.  The "sisters" (older and younger) products with slight changes in the face and body morphs are a middle ground for me.  Again, if I don't like the base body, I won't buy the faces.  If they were just the head/neck, though, . . .

Possibly. I have used some of the Smith Micro figures (Kelvin and such) as head donors in illustrations I have done. They had good expressions and head but the bending normally left a lot to be desired so I would take parts and use them since I couldn't really use the whole figure.

Yes, but I would be paying $10.00 + dollars for the whole product and only using part of it.  I would rather pay $10.00 for just a couple of faces.

I am not a merchant and cannot model anything, so I have no idea how someone decides what their effort is worth when it comes to profit-over-time, I just remember reading a while back that the Marketplace requires a minimum figure of $5.00 US, so I am using that as the minimum in my example.  If someone wanted to make faces only at $5.00 a pop, I think there would be a market, I just do not know how big of one, and I think that is what the OP was asking in his own way.

I do not use Victoria but her faces and figures make up at least half of my Wishlist so, if I ever do use her, I already know what I would use her for instead of "having" to switch and then searching the Marketplace to see what I would be limited to do.

Would I pay more than $5.00 for just a face?  Maybe, if it were a celebrity (near)clone, but I doubt I would ever pay more than $10.00 even for one of those.  :)

I think Renderosity prices are very fair and affordable.

for each $5.00.
Renderosity gets half so the Vender only gets $2.50
and the bank gets around $2.00 dollars for each transaction from Renderosity part.
depends on what deal renderosity has with the bank.

and then there's all the sells and discount's.

and we can't forget Venders & Renderositys pays taxes.

I get ya don't want to buy a body morph just to get the head morph.
but thats the game ,it all up to you to play or not.

ya could make morphs with the morph brush or in Blender it's free.
