Subject: Quicker way to delete faces?

Is there any way to get Blender to delete faces more quickly?  Pressing X or Delete always brings up the Delete menu, which provides some options.  Is there any way to make Blender know that when I select a face, and then X or Delete, I want just that face gone, without always having to deal with the delete menu to confirm that?

I know when I ALT-X to delete an edge, I can choose to also dissolve verts, which is what I want 90 percent of the time, so I keep that option ticked, and it won't bother me again.  Doesn't seem to be an option to get that quicker way of deleting faces.

Yes you can give it a shortcut. Hit x.... brings up the delete menu.... right click vertices.... this brings up a menu that will let you set up a shortcut... like shift+X. Make sure you don't assign it a shortcut already in use. Unless it's something you don't use much.

That's fantastic!  Thank you very much, Cybermonk.  That saves me a lot of time.

Also, while I have your ear, is there a way to change the behavior of the way we DEselect objects?  Instead of always reaching for the keyboard, I sometimes think it would be convenient just to mouseclick somewhere on an empty space in the scene to deselect an object, as is common in so many other modeling software applications.

When I first began learning how to model, I found it very useful to use the hotkey A, or Shift click to deselect the object I was working on at the moment in Blender, because it reduced the frequency of selection errors when you had more then a few objects in the scene.  But as time went on, I found myself wishing for a way to deselect my current object with a simple mouse gesture instead.  After all, we use our mouse to select objects in the scene, so why not also deselect the object in the same manner, and reassign the Grab Move tool, or just disable it?  I barely use the grab move to make object translations, even to this day.

I'm sure now, after customizing Blender so much lately, that there is a way to do that in the User Preferences panel, but I can't seem to locate it.  I see where we can change the behavior of our right-click object selection (I have mine set to Left-Click), but nothing for deselecting an object, except to change hotkeys.

In addition to, or instead of deselcting whole objects, what about in Edit Mode?  Can I somehow tell Blender I wish to DEselect faces simply by clicking on the empty grid, or empty scene space?  Instead of always a hotkey?

Thanks for all the help.  Even if non of this is possible, I would still be amazed every day at the wonders of Blender.  How can it be that a FREE software can do all of this?  It's awesome.  :thumbupboth:

Personaly I like most of the shortcuts in Blender but each to there own. Including a link to a thread at Blender Artist about this subject.

Indeed!  I like most of Blenders shortcuts too.  Like I said, when I was learning to model, the hotkey to deselect was a blessing.  It still can be very good in object mode, so I will not complain.  At least I can have it in Edit mode with a mouseclick, which I feel really saves some time!  That's awesome.  Thanks!

Hey everyone!  I have yet another question about improving my modeling speed.  Does  anyone know how we can go about setting up edge cut connections like are being done at this point in the linked video:

I know it's not Blender, but I've been following this tutorial as it was posted in the 3d modeling forum.  When I reached this point, I wondered if we had a tool that could make edge cuts through unorthodox edge selections like this, in an equally simple way.  It seems to be done by selecting edges, then pressing some command to automatically connect them all with a very straight and symmetric way.

I know we have the subdivide, which I use all the time to make nice connections through edge rings, but it doesn't seem to work right for dong this kind of cut.  Instead, the only solution I can think of is the K key, then hold down alt to get the edges straight, but sometimes that doesn't seem to work perfectly, and I have to adjust things by hand even more.  I don't mind using the knife tool mind you.  The knife tool in Blender seems to be lightyears better than cutting tools I've seen in any other modeling software.  I was just wondering if there was any automatic way to do this which I'm missing in my workflow.

UPDATE!!   I found the solution!  I forgot to enable the Quad/Tri mode in the Subdivide options.  Wow, that was silly of me.  If you subdivide without that option ticked, it won't work, but if you tick the Quad/Tri option box in the Subdivide menu while the tool is active, it will make the same kind of edge cut connection.  The automatic quad creation isn't quite as perfect as the way it's done with 3dsmax, but it works, and works very well!

lol had to try that to see what you meant ;-)

yeah I would have subD'd edges one at a time then joined

few more clicks but then I never had the prob you had

I did not know it was possible to connect the edge as was done there.  Thank you to announce it in Blender.
