Subject: Texture turns into a black nightmare

I am having a little trouble. I have been working on getting the texture onto the rails of my staircase but it seems it breaks up and turns into a burnt looking thing. What I want is for the red wood texture to continue all the way to the top. I am using the material that came with poser 8 to do this. Here is a screen shot. Why is it having this problem? The rail is one solid object so it isn't supposed to break up like this.

Could you click the advanced tab of the material room, and post a screenshot of that?

Is that a preview, rather than a Firefly render?

If the staircase is a model you've created might also be useful to know what program was used to create it incase this is a problem with the mesh or uv

A long time ago I experienced the same problem with the wood shader.
I discovered one of the nodes had an unfortunate value in one of its inputs which caused this. Replacing the offending value with a more sensible solved the problem.

When I get home (tomorrow) I'll see if I can remember what I had to change.

It is a firefly render. Here is the advanced tab. I have poser 8 and what I used was found under real shaders > woods > Stained Red Wood.

The mesh was made in wings3d, but I know it is fine since I tried to apply a different material to it and it works fine. It seems to be just this one. I have tried it on other models too and the same thing happens.

I hope you can remember what it was. Thanks.

Jay, to be a useful screenshot, you need to expand every node (open its picture and open its data panel), and arrange them so that they are not overlapping.  For *math function* nodes, just expand the data panel.

Ah, thought it was a 2d image.

uncheck refl lite mult and refl KD mult.  may help with rail reflection issue.

I'm not sure if I'm going to be a lot of help :(

I had as similar problem once, but I cannot reproduce it now. This might be because of the version of Poser that I'm using now, which is several versions further on.

Anyway, at the time my solution was this:

Find the node labelled 'fBm', and expand it

Change the Octaves setting from 20 to 8

This worked for me. Perhaps it will work for you too.

Thanks for trying. I gave it a shot but it is still doing the same thing. Here is all the tabs open. I hope you guys can figure it all out. There is too much math for my mind.

I've seen a couple of posts in the past year with problems with 3d textures where moving the mesh caused the effect to change (ie effect down to x,y,z values). Unfortunately the only post I could find for this was with granite and didn't have a solution. From a diagnostic point of view it might be useful to find out if this 3d material has the same problem (i.e. is this a scaling issue or a positional or bug issue).

whats your uv map like??

Just curious, since other materials work on it, why would it be a problem with the mesh? I will have to take a look again at the map, but I am just wondering why some would work while others don't?

just wondering lol , only time I had anything like that was on importing a 3ds with whacky uvs (some verts where on a dif planet lol ) but that wouldn't take any procedual without [the same] bits going black
