Subject: More distinct separate light rays possible? Point source

putrdude ( ) posted Thu, 20 November 2014 at 5:48 PM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 8:42 AM

Hi!

Poser 2012 pro.

I have a point light inside a cage with slats instead of bars.

Point light emanates from within cage, casting shadows on the walls, the slats blocking the light as it should be.

If I increase atmosphere I get better rays, but increased atmosphere tends to wash out the rest of the image.

Is there a way to get nice distinct rays without increasing the atmosphere?

Thanks

You can play with the falloff settings of the light. Inverse linear or inverse square mode should make the effect close to the light source much stronger.

I was looking for "God Rays" somewhat like that a little more dispersion, but I'm hoping to get them to be created by the slats blocking the light.

I've changed the lights from point to spot and gotten better results, and the falloff did separate them more, now I'm trying to get them to NOT wash out the rest of the image.

Getting there, but pointing them in the right directions is helping, it gives the rays more in the background without washing out the foreground.

Thanks!

in addition:

idea 1: lights have an Atmosphere Strength parameter, when you increase it (massively, 0.1 at least) you get more effect from the light, or: for the same effect you can do with less fog

idea 2: the Scripts menu holds an procedure to render per light. The you can combine the results in post, using layers in Screen (or Bleach) mode in your Photoshop or alike. That gives full control without re-rendering.

Usually I'm wrong. But to be effective and efficient, I don't need to be correct or accurate.

visit www.aRtBeeWeb.nl (works) or Missing Manuals (tutorials & reviews) - both need an update though

Thank you.  I thought about doing it in post in PS. Just seemed like a pain to line up the light rays through the slats and thought it might look less real.

May have to go that route, but still playing with it.

Thank you.
