I've searched but I'm at my wits end.  Any ideas?  Screenshots of the material room even if you've had good results?

Try the above first and see if they suit you. If you have a piece of jewelry that has a backing and the gemstone turns black, try this:

If BB suggest something else, I would follow his suggestion :).

IIRC, search RDNA's forum for gemstone shaders.  BB contributed to a thread started there some time ago.  There was also a thread started here.  Unfortunately, I am not at my own home computer to dig through my saved links to help further.

If you're looking for crystal, these have lots of MT5 files  http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/?item_id=63880

This one has some gem MT5 files too  http://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/?item_id=67055 It says it's an add-on for a store product, but you don't actually need the product to use the gem mats.
