Subject: When did they get a spell checker here?

MikeMoss ( ) posted Tue, 27 January 2015 at 8:10 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 1:06 PM

Hi

I just noticed that I now have a working spell checker on the forum.

That's something that always bugged me, I'm glad to see that it finally works. LOL

I hear it's been there for a while, but we've been keeping quiet about it because whenever RorrKonn tries to use it, we smell something burning!
The machines simply can't handle it :-P

Ever since the new format went into effect.

Compared to some of RorrKonn's, that was a piss in the park to decypher :-D

Irony. Did you mean "glad"? And spell checker rejects LOL

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Of course spell checkers only pick up incorrect spelling, not incorrect words. Last week a pizza store in the UK got done for offering 'roasted aborigines' as a pizza topping (a vegetarian option no less!)... it was supposed to be 'aubergines'.

I used to be a supervisor in a department which sent out letters on behalf of the company's directors and chairmen.  Some of the spelling errors I picked up on were truly frightening; more so because the people responsible had supposedly spell checked 'em before passing them to me for final approval.  What was even worse were the ones which showed a cheerful disregard for grammar and punctuation, particularly the use of the "greengrocer's apostrophe".

In all honesty, most of the people in the department shouldn't have been let anywhere near a keyboard, let alone be allowed to write on behalf of the board.

I, of course, don't need - and have never needed - a spell chekcer. :)

I used to have a human spell checker called PJF, my highly educated posh friend.
In fact he was better than a spell checker cause he used to drop hints about misplaced punctuation, and, stuff, like, that aswell!

I'm happy to help people out with their spelling but I admit it bugs me sometimes, usually when Claire asks me several times in a day to spell the same words over and over.

The only times incorrect spelling and wayward grammar gets my goat is when it's in advertising, packaging or any corporate material.  It makes me think they must be an unprofessional bunch if they can't be bothered to get the basics right.

Individual people, however, shouldn't be ridiculed; some may be dyslexic, others may not be well educated, some don't have english as their first language, some may be lazy and - I guess - some may just be plain dim.  Not for me to judge, though.

Grammarly is very useful, it has saved me from several embarrassments.
