Subject: Useless Sitemail Notification Icons at top right of screen

obm890 ( ) posted Thu, 19 March 2015 at 5:00 AM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 1:11 PM

In the good old days, before the forum pages were 'improved', I could see at a glance on any page whether I had new sitemail or other notifications because the 2 little icons would blink in color to get my attention. It worked.

They have now been replaced by a row of grey icons which are merely inert links, not indicators. If I want to see whether I have new notifications I have to visit the notifications page where I can see the actual list of notifications, and guess what? There, at the top of the Notifications page, are the old blinky icons! That's like hiding your car's fuel gauge in the fuel tank, or the oil pressure warning light under the hood.

The old, useful icons are also still on the gallery pages. I guess they'll be replaced by the useless ones soon?

Yes you are correct and it drives me crazy because I am a little OCD about that kind of thing.  It has been reported and the programmer will work to get that corrected.  I can't provide you with a date but they are aware of the issue.

add to that, the issue where you get notified of a sitemail when there really isn't one, which is infuriating.

I'd just like to get site mails when someone replies to a forum post.  Even checking the box doesn't always work.

Why can't you get a date? Professional programmers produce dates, and then they deliver by those dates.  I have two people who think I did not respond to them in site mail when in fact they just don't know I did. One of them claimed, in public, that I was tired of his questions.

This is more than wrong, don't you think? It's serious when you have a vendor trying to provide support, and the customer doesn't even read his response, right?

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Since the feature is actually implemented on the notifications page, I conclude that this is a simple copy and paste. It should take about 15 minutes to move the code into the right place and unit-test it. But let's call it 8 hours, shall we?

Then give a day or two for QA. (I'm being extremely generous here.)

So - today is Monday. I figure this could be completed by people who are utterly devoid of energy in three days, while they watch TV and eat popcorn.

So here's your date - how about next Monday - April 20. Is there any plausible reason this 30-minute task cannot be completed in one entire week?

Honestly, I just don't think there's any incentive to fix some of the forum and sitemail issues on Rendo's part. Makes me feel very unwelcome as a customer.

Reading this thread made me check my site mail and I had six emails from Rendo and they were all for sales that I looked pretty good but if this thread didn't exist I would never have known they were there. That's a lot of lost sales from me.

Ok don't shoot the messenger please.  I asked again and it seems it will not be corrected until the next major release.  They know that it isn't working and they have it in their notes.  So it's coming this part I can promise but when I am not sure.

This one is reminiscent of indicators not working on a car.

Generally the function of the car is not majorly impaired though the likelihood for a major accident has been greatly increased due to the fault.

Where I am from a vehicle with a similar fault to this would be defected and taken of the road until the fault is fixed and the owner fined.

Just so we're clear that it's an issue, I want to inform you that

I did not get an email regarding responses to this thread (and hundreds of others).

I almost never learn that people are responding to me since the site update. I have to go back to threads manually and look for responses.

Yes the sitemail notifications on this page do not work I agree.  If you go the homepage on the site you will see they look different and those work.  (most of the time)  They do have this on their list but until a new release is pushed out unfortunately we have to wait.
