Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 21 1:30 pm)
Running PP2012 with the 10166 build (and previous builds) with ZERO problems.

As far as I know, since I've already searched in the Microsoft Community forum, for the same "problem", as was stated there all the programs for Windows 8 and 8.1 must work smoothly, for Windows 7 there may be some problems if they're old and are already running only using some "tricks".
For the hardware, if you're already running at least Windows 7, there's no problem.
Keep in mind that the free upgrade is related to the system you're upgrading and to the OS version you're using, once upgraded, the licence of the previous OS is locked with the upgrade and what version you will receive is related to the version you're using, Home, Pro, and so on.ย You can't install and use your "old" OS on another computer.
You can install it only in that system, if you change hardware ,not one or more hard disks, but processor or motherboard, there may be a request for a new validation, but you can't.
Only on the same system you can re-install the OS, also as a fresh installation, but at the moment nothing was said on how to obtain an ISO image of the OS and when it will be available, the only suggestion for now is to create an image of the system on an external drive and then use this to install everything again.
The Windows 10 upgrade downloads the ISO. Simple instructions on how to make an install disk are here.... (they are other places as well)

When I built my latest machine a few years ago I kept the old one intact so I have two machines that run Poser on Windows 7. ย It is the older one that I will move to Windows 10 and it will be well into the upgrade year before I move the newer machine, if at all. ย Nice having free software but I am cautious about the possible 'lock ins'ย

I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 -ย Ryzen 9ย 5900HX,ย with 64 gig ram and 3 TBย storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using anย AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU .ย ย The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
I have been using 8.1 on my main render machine, plus the Win10 review on another. There are definitely some better 64-bit multi-core memory management things in newer Windows, which helps large-memory tasks like Poser. As for trust ... I think you either need to "trust" Microsoft, or start using Ubuntu Linux and blender. If you don't trust Win10, then how would Win7 or XP be any better? Your either on the bus, or off it.
(I have an 8-core 4.0 Ghz AMD with 16MB and 256GB SSD for Windows, 3 TB for Poser content, PPro2014 and Win 8.1)
Hi
I'm running Windows 10 64bit, and Poser and all my other stuff runs fine. Most things seem to run better.
I've been running Windows 10 for almost a year now as my only OS and the final version is pretty good, but it will continue to improve. Since it's going to be the last version of Windows according to MS, it's just going to grow and evolve.
And yes they are going to really push in on people, they want every one in the world running a PC to use the same OS.

I have it on all my machines and poser 7 and pro14 work fine.......did have a couple of very old things that refuse to work(but I have newer tools for same job so no worries) even psp7 works ok and that's well old I hate the look of it .....reminds me of old dos programs but apart from that it all works well......better then win7

Hmm...still not sure whether or not to trust it.
Be sure to read the EULA... all of it.

Hi
I just came back to confirm that it is necessary to install the updates to get Poser to run in Windows 10. When I first answered this question, it had been so long since I had installed it that I had forgotten that I couldn't get it to start until I installed the service releases.
If anyone hasn't installed Smith Micro Download Manager, you should do so, it takes all the hassles out of installing updates and reinstalling Poser it you need to. It remembers your registration number so all you have to do is click on a button.

Yes it is safe to update IE after Win10, however, the browser is not longer called IE.
Thanks, but what I mean is it definately safe to upgrade from IE10 to IE11 on Windows 7. Explorer 11 used to hang the Poser library although I think it was fixed in SR3 (?)
Just wanted to confirm here before I update from IE10 to 11.

Strangely my Win10 Updatye notification completely disappeared after a few days, no idea why. Googling suggest maybe because I blocked the Internet Explorer update which previously conflicted with Poser. I have Pro 2014 SR5.2 is it safe now to update IE to see if it fixes my Win10 Upgrade app?
You can upgrade to Windows 10 whenever you want to without the app. Just go to this page and follow the instructions.
Just be sure to select the Upgrade Option.

You are right, its now Edge but the IE is still available, you have to search All Apps and there under Windows Accessories you'll find IE 11.

I have received a notification from Microsoft that a free Windows 10 upgrade will be available from July 29th for each of my computers and tablets. Does anyone know if there is likely to be any issues running Poser etc with Windows 10? Cheersย
