Subject: Displacement Map problem

arrowhead42 ( ) posted Tue, 21 July 2015 at 10:58 PM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 9:00 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm working on texturing a superhero cowl, and using a displacement map to simulate a seam. But when I render the image, the line of the seam has something I'll call sparklies on it.... looks like scattered pixels that are the color of the flesh texture beneath the cowl. See the image attached here. You may have to look close to see them, but they're there. Can anyone explain what they are, or how to make them go away?

Thanks -

How is the map plugged in? Can you show us your material room settings? Maybe a screen shot.

Sure.... here it is. Note that the setting is .1, but it even did it at the default setting of .0833

My  guess is that your displacement is set too high.  Turn it down a little at a time and test until it is set to stop causing the distortion.

You can set it higher if you use bump instead of displacement.

You want a displacement of over an inch on what now?

also, uncheck refl lite mult.

maybe is unchecked by default (or channel deleted) in P11.

I may be off here, but challenging  a lower displacement with a higher bump might do the trick. Gurus, a techie expert reason would be a better answer.lol.

Min shading rate? Displacement bounds? Map too pixelated? Not running through subtract node? Could be any number of things. Bagginsbill is here so you're in capable hands.

Also, try changing the filtering on the displacement to "crisp" or "none".

OP should try low bump - may speed it up.  wouldn't use both bump and displ.

use tex filtering when tex have repetitive patterns, but with lines like that you would use "none", gamma=1 and make sure lines are anti-aliased, not jaggies.

My point is it's a thin line raised up from the surface over an inch. I can't imagine that's what you want. If it's a low ridge, then make it a low displacement and the holes will go away.
