It looks far too modern for 1954.  As I only buy contemporary stuff I thought I'd ask.

It is indeed from 1954:

The 1950's styling was far more "modern" than most people give them credit for.  :-)

It's because the overall shape of the passenger bus hasn't as changed as much as cars and pickups. You see the same with the school bus and other utility vehicles. Hardly anyone would confuse a car manufactured in the 2000s with one from the 1960s, but if you look at a flat-front Blue Bird bus, you have to look a lot closer to see differences.

Aircraft have the same thing. The Boeing 707 first flew in 1957 but doesn't look a whole lot different overall from an Airbus 318 that first flew in 2002.

Yes, I naturally assumed buses back then would have looked entirely different.

Long-haul trucks are another good example. A Peterbilt 359 from 1967 looks a lot like a Peterbilt 379 (aka live-action Optimus Prime) which was last produced in 2007.
Generally speaking, vehicles in which function is more important than form tend to be very conservative in changing their appearance. Farm tractors, dump trucks, train engines...it's often difficult to identify, without detailed knowledge, when a particular vehicle's design comes from.

I've road over 3000 miles on them damn busses over the decades and I hate them beyond words. there a living horror movie .

Don't know if it's cause I'm as old as dirt ,or I've been around them so much.

but I can tell you at a glance about what decade a bus is.

but they say ignorance is bliss wish I was ignorant about busses.

you can see in the little detail that tells you the decade it's from.

but the big difference is .does it even have a toilet or a toilet that works.

the toilets where always stopped up and stank terrible.

so we would stop at a gas station where a gas attendant would pump your gas.

and give you a key to the bathrooms.

the bathrooms where on the side and no air conditioner ,heat or ventilation. they stank beyond words also.and gave a new meaning to filthy.

oh back to the bus,the bus would spit out a lot of stinking smoke. if it didn't have air-conditioning got hot people stank.

and guaranteed every time you road a bus you would get sick from the bus fumes.

That ribbed aluminium siding, small square windows, extruding signage, it all looks very 50's to me.

Do modern US coaches really still look like that?
They must have huge expanses of curved glass by now!

On my last trip to New York I noticed lots of archaic trucks and vans, when I looked closer I found out they were brand new.
Deliberately styled that way?

It was a weird mix of old and new. Like the way our airport/hotel minibus had 1950s styling but also had free WiFi!

flat-front Blue Bird bus

Literally the only historical inaccuracy in this ad Disney made was the bus, the flat-front variety weren't around in the early 1980s:

A little personal history here ... from about 1955 - 1960 I lived in a gutted and remodeled school bus which except for a black visor and a grey paint job looked like this.

Ah that was great ... Ohio in the summer and Texas in the winter in a home made rv. My great grandparents were pretty clever. But Grandpa had to sell the bus  when I started first grade.

...that might come as a surprise the the people who took this picture of a bus manufactured in 1962: 1962-gillig-pacific-bus-f.jpg?w=640

The retro commercial is fake. Pixar created it and is included on the dvd of the movie. The bear didn't actually exist in the 1980s, or the commercial for it. Apparently there's a lawsuit over the bear itself tho, as some company claims Disney stole the name and concept from a line of bears they've been creating for a while.

It was a promotional video Disney made for hyping Toy Story 3. If you've seen it, you'll understand the point of the commercial. BTW they actually sold LoHB plushes that smelled like strawberries and said a plethora of happy best friend things in Ned Beatty's voice. I can't imagine who bought one for their child, though.

I love riding buses. I've been on 3 long interstate bus rides (Biloxi, MS to Los Angeles, Oklahoma City to Rajneeshpuram OR, and Madras OR to Harrisburg PA). If I ever go back to visit my family in California, I will probably take a bus.
