Subject: 1000 character limit -- captions vs stories

auntietk ( ) posted Wed, 19 August 2015 at 2:38 PM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 4:31 AM

There are many people here on Renderosity who are writing stories and illustrating those stories with images. A lot of that has been happening in the individual galleries (for example, someone posts a Poser image with a short chapter in a continuing story), and we have a Writer's Gallery that has, in the past, been set up for longer works.

1000 characters is insufficient in both cases.

It sort of goes without saying that the Writer's Gallery character limit needs to be bumped back up to where it was before. I'm sure having a 1000 character limit in that gallery was just an oversight. (Before the big change this week, the Writer's Gallery had a larger word limit with smaller image parameters. I think the image size limit was 800x800, most recently.)

As far as the limit in the other galleries goes, I'd like to see it raised. People often have a lot to say about their images. Describing the subject of a photograph or providing credits for a 3D piece can use up a lot of keystrokes.

The old limit was ... what ... 4500? Whatever the character length, it was about 750 words. (Trust me on this ... I posted a story in the photography gallery for Chip's birthday once, and I know exactly how much I had to cut it to fit!)

Text doesn't take up a lot of kb space. Can we please have it back?

Thanks for checking ...
Tara

Hi auntiek-- Thanks so much for posting this! Yes, I've made a note about this to be taken care of.

Thanks for your patience.

I agree with Tara. I post my poser image with a 4000 character text that is the episode of a long running story and that explains the image. I read with pleasure the work of artist writers in the writers gallery and they need some "room" . Every time I write an episode, it's a struggle to cut and compress it in order the get a text within 4000 characters. The now permitted 1000 characters' comment will terminate the "graphic novels" (image+ text) inside RR's galleries and obviously the writers section. I suggest to go back to the comment of 4000 characters and the image of 4000x4000 - 512k image for the galleries, plus to the old and successful format (image and text size) for the writers' gallery.

Oh, and here's something fun you're going to have to fix. Writing in the caption box (I can't call it anything else until we have more than 1000 characters) is not an exercise in how to be happy with your writing. Spacing, new lines, paragraphs ... nada. Everything comes out as a single sentence. Please get the programmers to acknowledge that the "enter" key is a valid keystroke. It means "I need a new line here."

I'm a poet. Word placement and line spacing is just as important as the words I choose. Can you imagine what a poem would look like if you couldn't start a new line or put a space between stanzas?

What's it going to look like when we get our nice big character count back in the Writer's Gallery if an author can't start a new paragraph?

The breaths between words
Those pauses that create

Anticipation

Convey as much
As any polysyllabic masterpiece

Don't dismiss our need
For the

ENTER

Key

This is what that would look like if they don't fix the problem: The breaths between words Those pauses that create Anticipation Convey as much As any polysyllabic masterpiece Don't dismiss our need For the ENTER Key

Huh. I didn't get as many spaces in that poem as I put in. There should be three blank lines in front of "Anticipation."

Dear Tara,
I've just discovered that "spacing, new lines etc." disappear if you copy and paste from Microsoft Word (but it didn't happened with the old text box). You must type it directly in the text box (maybe, I've not yet tried), or they suggest me to copy and paste the text from Grammary (you can see its ad here in RR).
Someone here at RR thinks that a poem, a tale, a novel are works people create in a flash right into the text box, and they can do it again and again if it disappear when their upload is rejected.

@ Flavia -- I have not tried any copy paste yet. What I am talking about comes from directly typing into the text box. But thank you so much for the information! -- Tara

I'm with Tara on this.
I post a lot of space art which goes with a story or highly detailed synopsis. The old limit was 4096 characters (the characters required for markup effects were included in that count) and I found that limit to be quite restrictive most times. I also found that the character counter in the upload page was often incorrect. I can not see how I can continue projects like 'Encyclopedia Galactica' at Renderosity if everything must be kept to only 1000 characters.

Site Admin Online Now!

As of this morning they raised the character count to 25k for every gallery. Which raises other problems. But, yes, this issue was fixed.

Well, that's good news.
Unfortunately, my newest project is still 1600x900.

auntietk ( ) posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 5:03 PM

Thanks for the update, Wolf! is that enough in the writers gallery for you? I thought it was way higher before, but I don't remember what the count was. I'm thrilled at the 25K limit for regular posts, but won't stop until Cody has room to roam.

Interesting that thing about text size = 25k but they don't say how I can measure them. Example: the same text in MS Word is 50k, in notepad is 4k. They told me that the use of Microsoft Word (copy and paste) into the text box in the upload page corrupts their program, so MS Word is out. Tara said that the punctuation mess come also directly typing into the text box. They suggested me to use Grammary. I'll try with notepad text. Since .txt files are very small, this can allow almost a Bible-sized text, but again HOW do they misure the 25k of size?

flavia49 ( ) posted Thu, 20 August 2015 at 6:08 PM

Sorry, I misunderstood. Now they allow 25000 characters for each gallery.

Just saw the new thread. Thanks, Wolf! :)
