opalcat ( ) posted Fri, 05 October 2001 at 12:27 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 7:31 AM

I've just gone on a downloading binge and after unzipping everything...well.. it's a mess! Is there an easy way to organize stuff in my poser folders ? I get so lost... I don't know where half the stuff is supposed to go! :O

Read the readme's that are nearly always included. go to this page for a DAZ technicians organizational tips http://www.daz3d.com/pages/faq/techtipsmain.html Try a few other sites for beginners tutorials on file extentions & organization - here's a couple to start; http://www.renderosity.com/tutorial.ez http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/iishadowcatii/website/id34.htm Download Poser Explorer 1.4.4 from freestuff to help you organize things good luck!

Been there! I know just how you feel. Eventually, when I learned how to do it correctly, I then uninstalled Poser (saving everything in the correct folders) then I reinstalled and added the folders and it was neat and tidy. Irene

I always unzip or install into a single folder on my hard drive (say My Documents), then place files myself where I'd like them to go. For example, all the clothing I have bought and/or downloaded for Michael lives in it's own folder named Clothes-Mick. Same goes for Victoria (Clothes-Vick), and P4 Male and Female. I do the same for Shoes, Jewelry (props), Hair, etc. Textures I let go where they'd like...buggers up the MAT files if you don't. Ok, so I'm a little retentive, but I can find exactly what I'm looking for in under 30 seconds ;)

Thanks for all of your replies! (glad to know I'm not alone heh)

and when you install the files in your own directory and an update is produced, you will also need to remember where the files were stored. Very messy environment it produces this Poser.

I install everything separately. I don't install anything until I checked each file, made sure it loaded and worked, and the RSR is clear. Last week, I really cleaned up. I got all my libraries corrected and organized. For example, all Fairy Wings, no matter who they are from go in the "Various Fairy Wings" Folder. All Jewelry goes in the Jewelry folder, if its a collection, it goes in its own folder, or if I have a lot of a person's models/textures then they will get there own special folder. For example Willjen has a lot of items up in freestuff. So I made a folder called Willjen, and whenever I download their item it goes in that special folder. I then make sure all Daz items are re-worded with the Word DAZ in front (quick to find). Then I re-did all my RSR files (only if it needed a overhaul). I hate grey background RSR thumbnails, they are ugly. So I pulled out my RSRConverter and did them all to make them cutout like Daz does their thumbnails. I know a little over the top, but now I am really proud of my Poser workspace. This week I have a whole folder of zipped Renderosity stuff. I am going to reorganize everything. The key to organizing, don't extract everything at once. Extract each .Zip, check it and then move to the next. Don't wait to organize, because it will become crazy, organize where you are going to put the file right then. Sorry I got carried away, I love to get organized :)

Heh heh heh Nice to see I'm not the only "organiser" around here :)

I'm just about to start cleaning out my Poser files too. First thing I will be doing before any file gets moved is to back up everything. Just in case...

okay Opalcat, Peggy, and file bingers everywhere, I want all those Poser folders cleared out and organized pronto or I am sending in Xena to make you work!! What are you standing around for, get to it. LOL, just kidding!! ^_^

Netherworks ( ) posted Sat, 06 October 2001 at 3:06 AM

A good tool to use is Wolfie's Poser Loader (should be in freestuff - utilities). When I go on a binge, I unzip files into a folder without extracting Pathnames and use the Loader to get it into Poser correctly. Templates (UV Maps) have to be moved manually, of course. Loader also have .pcf decoding built-in, which is sweet.

LOL @ Silver. I did say I was organised, but man I can't believe how much stuff I have! I'm sooo looking forward to getting my new hard drive next week so I can do a total re-install and lose all the debris :)

opalcat ( ) posted Sat, 06 October 2001 at 2:41 PM

where do those templates GO anyway?

Netherworks ( ) posted Sun, 07 October 2001 at 4:33 AM

They can go anywhere. I make a template folder for them (I have poser on a seperate drive partition). They are for your own use in making texture maps. :)

ok, the big problem for me is to keep them in libaries or to keep pz3s that don't have to go in runtime. :/ all libraries = poser slow changing libraries all pz3s = can't see thumbs, slow to get specific items phooey. :P

With pz3's I open them up straight away (into a temp directory) and save to the libraries what I want to keep. Then I back up the pz3 somewhere and then delete it from the temp dir. Pz3's drive me nuts in that they move all my settings around. I'm left handed so I have things set differently than most people.
