Subject: Ad spyware?

Wonderland ( ) posted Thu, 27 August 2015 at 7:21 PM · edited Sat, 09 November 2024 at 3:47 AM

I've been noticing that the banner ads are tracking the sites I've been to and are showing ads for them... I visited Consumer's Reports site and the American Film Market and now I'm getting banner ads for both. Neither have anything to do with digital art and clearly I already know about them, because I've already been there. Is Renderosity tracking every single site I go to so it can offer up an ad for that exact page? This seems really intrusive and is denying me a right to privacy! Thank god, I don't visit porn sites, but if I did, would I be getting porn ads? I don't want Renderosity tracking every site I visit, how can I stop this?

Also, I recently hired movers and closed an AT&T phone account and I'm now getting ads about moving and AT&T! This is scary...

(Opens adblock on THIS VERY PAGE)

Here's your problem.

https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js
https://www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js

You need to block/redlist those two. Google analytics is the tracker, while adsbygoogle processes this data and loads ads based on the datamining. What they do is PRECISELY what Wonderland described. Google refers to it as "unintrusive ads", BTW (the analytics, too)

I'd much rather see vendor ads, new products and sales. Why don't they stick to that? Those I used to click on. I'm not going to click on the American Film Market's site because I'm already using it for business (that's the ad on the top now.) I see Google gives you a choice of ads targeted to your interest, which would be fine if they gave me ads for art and photography and other interests that I checked, not sites I've already visited that have nothing to do with that like movers because I once Googled movers. That's a Google issue I guess, but this is the only site I've seen this on. I'm also not comfortable with the fact that Google is tracking and saving my every query online, and I'll have to look into stopping that. But as far as Renderosity is concerned, why not go back to vendor ads or at least Smith Micro or other 2D or 3D art related ads? Also, I'm surprised they can even use Google ads because there's nudity on this site. Google ads banned my site for that very reason.

Get Noscript, make sure to NOT allow google-analytics.com, and they will no longer track you anywhere :)

I don't think they have that for Safari and I'm on an iPad. Ad tracking is already turned off in preferences on my iPad which I use for most of my shopping. Why do they need Google ads? No one is going to click on a site they already know about. Why would I constantly need movers? I really wish they would just put vendor store sales there or ads that have to do with digital art. I'm starting to get random ads like for Tide detergent. Why on earth would I click on that? You can pick and choose the ads you want on your website, I do that on my own website--I pick ads that are relevant to the site or even a certain page on the site.

for safari you use 3rd-party firewall (e.g. lil snitch) to block google-analytics.

On an iPad or iPhone? I checked the App Store, no apps to block ads. I wish they would just use ads that are relevant to the site like they used to. On one of my own websites, I have ads and you can choose what ads to display, instead of these random ads or ads for sites you just visited...

A simple google search for "Block google analytics" and "Safari" (yes, IN quotations) brought this up. Blocks both Analytics and Adsense. Don't think it blocks ads, though.
