Hey everyone--

I wanted to let you know that we've added a site search underneath the Community dropdown menu. You may search for members, news articles and gallery images! Hooray!

And, the other search box is used for Marketplace Items.

Please let us know if you have any questions! Thanks!

oh! i was just coming to ask a question about this very thing that i noticed yesterday you guys had implemented...

there is an "All" box at the very top of the search page, but if i put into the box, for example, the word 'pearl', i only get a return for users who have that name, in whole or in part, and also news articles. the other areas, such as the MP, the galleries, freestuff, and tutorials, i first need to click on their respective tabs and then i'm taken to those specified areas where i can then put in a word for my search.

would there be any way to just consolidate the results from a search to truly search "all" as implied at the top of those boxes to that one area? i was confused for a few until i realised that i had to navigate to each aforementioned areas to get full results.

no biggie if it can't be programmed that way, but it would go a long way in simplifying things for the end user.

Giana ( ) posted Tue, 25 August 2015 at 4:44 PM

ok, i just realised that you need to type in, say 'pearl' and search all, and THEN click on the different tabs AFTER that. my bad - it just wasn't obvious to me...

i like the fact that whenst i'm spring-boarded to a different area, that the search auto-pops for me.

i do, however, need to go back to the 'site search' if i want to get results for each area though [not criticism, just observation]. i'm assuming it's set up this way so as to not overload either the search function itself, or overwhelm the user with massive return of results, yes?

auntietk ( ) posted Tue, 25 August 2015 at 11:40 PM

I'm having a terrible time figuring this out. I tried putting in a search word and clicking "gallery images," and it took me to the "What's new" page.

Giana ( ) posted Tue, 25 August 2015 at 11:45 PM

it did that for me, too...

put in your search word, hit enter, and THEN click the galleries box/tab/link/whatever

auntietk ( ) posted Tue, 25 August 2015 at 11:50 PM

Thanks, Giana. Got it.

Basically, though, it's the same as what it was before. (Wow ... this is getting confusing. By "before," I mean last week, not "before" as in the old website.)

I still can't do a search in my own gallery for something specific. Somewhere around here there's a Forum thread I started about this subject where there's way more information about this issue ... rummages around in pockets ... I'll try to find it and see if I can reference it here.

I don't have many things at the top of my list, but the search feature in the galleries is right up there.

We have a wonderfully functional advanced sort feature for finding Forum posts, but the really awesome one we used to have to search the galleries is gone, gone, gone. :(

You know the one. You could put in a search word, choose between relevance and chronology, give it a date range, an artist's name, and even a gallery and genre. Boy, was that nice. I used to use it several times a week, and would do so again given half a chance.

Any hope of getting that back?

Hello,

If you enter what you would like to search or who in the search bar, it will ask you on the left side of the page if you want forums, galleries, etc. This is actually one of my favorite new features ?

Please let me know if I misunderstood and this is not what you are looking for.

Thank you,

Thanks, Kristi!

That's closer to what I was looking for than I had found before. I think I followed your instructions pretty well.

As a test, I searched the galleries, and photography in particular, for "Mark." But I can't narrow that down to my own gallery. Am I missing something?

What I generally use the function for is to make sure I'm not repeating myself. If I've got a picture of Mark in my gallery, I don't want to screw up and post it again. Or, maybe I want to talk about Mark and provide a link for people to look at the picture I posted of him several years ago.

So I found a bunch of photographs that used "Mark," or "marked," or "markup," or whatever, when it was in "relevance," and loads of pictures where the word or name "Mark" was used in the caption recently. So for that, it seems to be working fine.

But it's still useless to me if I can't filter it for a specific user's gallery.

Does it do that somewhere and I've missed it?

Tara

ps ... I keep meaning to mention this to you, but keep forgetting. I LOVE the ability to write comments on a full screen! That's a totally awesome feature. Maybe it was there before and I missed it, but it rocks. :)

Try this:
Go to your Avatar at the top, view gallery, click on the blue gallery box, type 'Mark' in the search. This should give you any gallery image that has the word 'Mark' in it.

Hopefully this is what you need and if it's not, I will take it to the programmers ?

The gallery search is my largest single problem and antietk expressed the problems with it clearly. You can't search by both chronology and any other given criteria (including artist) as you could before. The large "genre" search section over on the left does not make up for the removal of the "within last X days months years" feature that is now gone. The old way, you could find whatever image you wanted by artist, description and time the image was posted. Now you can only find "newer to older" or vis versa, making any targeted search a hit or miss proposition. The older search was faster and more specific and far less frustrating and annoying than its replacement.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but even starting by clicking the blue "my gallery" button, I still get everybody's work when I type in my search word.

CleonXXI expanded on the problem well. If you would please add his concern about the date range to what I've already said, that would be great. :) I've been here more than eight years, and have a lot of material to sift through.

This thread sort of got lost in the shuffle, and it's WAY high on my list, so I thought I'd give it a bump. I figured before I updated this thread and asked again, I'd check to make sure nothing had changed.

!!! Now it doesn't work at all !!!

When I type in something I want to search for, now my only search choices are for marketplace departments.

Could you please review the above thread and let me know if there's any way to search a gallery (mine or someone else's) given the parameters we have already discussed?

Thanks!!

yea, i remember your post, and you're right - it is lacking the "Advanced Search" features that you can find here in the forums, as well as in the old galleries.

if it's any consolation, i tried using the advanced search for the forums earlier tonight, using BWsupport as my 'search by user'. looking for posts older than 1 day, but newer than 10, used only the 'community center' as places to look, and i got absolutely no returns on the search... so maybe they're still fluffing the search functionality across all site areas? Hi Hope,

Nope ... I've still got issues. The way it works now is exactly the way it worked last week, except that the method for accessing the search has been modified. Different buttons, same result.

Please read the exchange I posted above between Kristi and myself. I've already gone into this in great detail, and don't particularly want to start over.

The way the search function works now is completely useless to me, and from what I've seen other people say about it, I'm not alone. I hope the programmers can give us something back like we had before. It was elegant and efficient and gave us everything we needed. The new search feature stops several steps short of usability.

Thanks for checking back on this! It's my absolute number one top-of-the-list issue.

@everyone the site search has changed. The top search now searches the Marketplace by default. To access the site search hit the 'Community' dropdown and click 'Site search'. However, currently this search only searches articles and users. However, after you search you can click the 'Marketplace Products', 'Gallery Images', 'Freestuff Items' or 'Standard Tutorials' in the sidebar to be redirected and searched within those areas.

auntietk ( ) posted Thu, 27 August 2015 at 1:06 AM

I realize the site search has changed, and I understand how it works. I've used the new search functions. I've seen how the marketplace search works, and how the community/site search works. I realize I'm not the only person you are addressing with your reply, but I would still like to get an answer to my question.

Is what we have now, today, the way it's going to be, or can we hope for an improvement?

i wasn't having any issues until a few days ago. here is what i also posted in the "Site Update Bug Report" thread:

i think there is an issue, at least in the galleries, regarding the use of the Gallery Search box.

if i use the Community > Site Search, and type in the word 'pearl', hit enter, and then click the gallery button from there, i am rolled into the galleries and my keyword autopops and results are shown.

however, if i am already in the galleries and type in 'pearl' myself into the Gallery Search box, i get no results whatsoever any longer. i know i did prior to the Site Search feature being implemented.

i'm using the most recent update for FireFox. the most recent update for FF was done yesterday, but this was happening prior to the update, so i think that that can be ruled out as a potential factor. i wanted to wait a couple days before reporting this in case it was just a fluke, but it's still occurring.

Thanks for all your work. I have successfully used the new search feature and am 99% sure I understand it.
This is my request for expanding the search feature to make it more useful for me and other photographers I've talked to:
I need to be able to search My Gallery frequently by topic/genre/year, i.e., beach/landscape/2012, etc. etc. to build albums and to find photos that I know I've posted in the past.

My gallery has over 1,400 photos in it posted over a seven year period. (Aug 11, 2008-August 2015)

@ Giana ... I just tried the search function and it is working as advertised.

@ Hope ...

A screen shot? No. Your search function is working just the way you say it should.

That is not my question.

We would like to be able to search a specific artist's gallery.
And a specific time frame.
And a specific word.

For example, I would like to be able to look up Houma House in ONLY my own gallery, and ONLY from January, 2013 to January, 2014, and ONLY in the photography gallery.

What we're talking about here, and what we're asking for, is a search function that is FURTHER REFINED than the one we currently have.

This is very important to a lot of people here. Is there any chance they'll work on this, or should we stop asking and go work on another problem?

Thanks,
Tara

Gallery search does not work for me either... Since the whole renovation business it stops working periodically... Or starts working periodically and not for long, to be more exact. Just... Do something - we had a perfectly working gallery that was easy to navigate and now it's a broken mess - this side is all about artists, the galleries is it's heart and at the moment it has major stutters...

auntietk ( ) posted Mon, 07 September 2015 at 1:05 PM

Just a bump on this for after the 3-day weekend.

to recap:

First choice would be a search feature like what we've got for the Forum, having everything on one page to begin with, and none of the boxes being mandatory (that gives us the most flexible search)

Search word filter for date range order by relevance or date search by artist by section by genre

Second choice (and it's a way-behind choice)

Add date range and "by artist" to the selection tree we currently have.

Those of us who live out in the country where there's no WiFi pay for data, which means every page we load costs a little bit of money, so having the search feature load one new page for each subsequent filter adds to my monthly Verizon bill!
