Subject: G3/V7 in Poser

Ok guys not trying to start arguements so plz dont but I honestly want to know a couple things. First of all I have Poser 10...not wanting to use Daz Studio, dont like it at all. Also cannot afford the money or time to upgrade my Poser. I am what I would consider and intermediate user as I have done some nice work but am not real deep in the software nor is there time for alot of learning. Between work and school time is my most precious commodity. But...I really enjoy Poser and playing around and creating. What I am curious about...I use V4, I understand V4 and all my resources are for V4. By the time I was ready to get genesis they went to Gen2...as i`m thinking not to get Gen2 they come out with Gen3 and V7 now. What I fear is that if even now I start slowly investing in something nbewer than V4 they will come out with yet a new figure set. Making what I bought for the earlier ones unuseable in the newer. To me there re a limited number of vendors and a limited number of resources that can be made. So the more diverse the market becomes the more dilute the pool of things for each figure, its like the diversification means less for each figure. Soooo Is V7 based on Gen3F? there seem to be a ton of new characters based on Gen3f or V7 and then things made for that character line. Why do they do that instead of just making everything based off gen3f? Or V7? If you buy one of the spinoffs then can you use only the items made for thsat specigic one? Or any gen3f or V7 item? Can V6 and Gen2F items be used on 3? Can V7 and Gen3 even be used in Poser 10? If not then the rest are all moot points. If they can be used then for Poser10 are the new figures of greater quality as far as use and realism..ie skin etc/ if there is no perceptible difference in how they look in Poser10 then Id be wasting my money and time. If anyone answers then thank you very much...I see some great renders in DS but havent really seen anything in Poser. Just trying to make sense of this stuff thanks Scott

Yes, V7 is based on Gen3F.

No, Gen3F/V7 does not currently work in any version of Poser. Some people have made attempts at making her work, but the results have not turned out very well as far as I'm aware.

You can use Gen1 and Gen2 and their characters in a limited capacity in Poser via a plug-in called D-SON. Gen3 currently does not work with D-SON for various reasons.

Some of the content for Gen2 might be compatible with Gen3 in D|S with various plug-ins. You'll need to ask in the D|S forum about that.

The development cycle for the Genesis figures has been about 1.5 to 2 years between each release. So based on that you should be able to expect Genesis 4/V8 in about the same time-frame.

Just a couple of minor corrections. The Plug-in is "The DSON Importer for Poser" not D-Son.

2 years between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. 2 Years between Genesis 2 and Genesis 3.

The content that is provided with Poser Companion files, when used with the DSON Importer for Poser, is limited in what ways in Poser? (Other than a lack of Collision and smoothing, or changing a shape after applying a geograft?)

For starters, the DSON software gets really, really balky once the user moves beyond 1 fully clothed figure. (This is on an 8-core Mac Pro with 32Gb of ram, so no, it isn't the computer - it is the software.) It also makes Poser itself much more likely to either lock up or crash.

At the end of the day, it is easier just to File --> Export out of DAZ and not fool with DSON at all.

According to Richard Haseltine, the most significant difference is that the smoothing modifier is not supported by the DSON importer in Poser, so there is more pokethrough of conformers than in Studio. For props and figures, the Poser Companion file is simply a script that calls the DSON Importer and tells it to load the corresponding .dsf file...

The discussion ends before even starting. Your only options are Rex/Roxie/Dawn/Dusk or the figures under development mentioned in this forum.

All of which are non starters at this point since the content just isn't there to support them. The only practical option is V4 so stick with that for the foreseeable future.

Can't speak for Rex and Roxie as I don't use them. Dawn has plenty of content but not a lot of fantasy sci-fi gear if that's what you're in to. Dusk is a male figure so you know how that goes. Support and development continues on both figures. You also have a number of clothing conversions options which many people make good use of.

I've had a lot of luck exporting Genesis 1 CR2s to Poser from Daz. Not interested in the later figures. You can save out the clothing and textures which retain the morphs. The clothing can then be used on any character you dial up on Poser on your Genesis export. I've put the same Hercules armor on an ogre, mouse or child. Fits as well as it fits in Studio as far as I can tell.

Depends on your needs and preferred workflow.

I have found, that Poser significantly decreases responsiveness as you add more figures, even Poser's included figures. That is not limited to using the DSON for Poser Plug-in. (In fact over on the Poser 2016 wishlist thread a different customer brought the same thing up.)

DSON Importer for Poser does not require DAZ Studio at all. You don't even have to have it on your computer.

The G3F base and the V7 morph use a completely different rigging and uv than the Genesis and the G2 line. The G3 line uses dual quaternion rigging and UDIM uv's. This pretty much ends the backwards compatibility.
