Subject: Why page numbers are important

rubel ( ) posted Fri, 04 September 2015 at 8:07 AM · edited Sat, 09 November 2024 at 11:50 AM

Sometimes, if I am looking through tons of images and I'm on, say, page 250, and I see something I like and pass it over and move on and come back say, several days later, it sticks in my mind that I saw the image somewhere around page 250. So I see how long it takes me to get to the first images I saw that day on pages 1 and 2 or 3, and let's pretend they are now on page 22. So I add that to 250 and I go and have a look around page 270, going in either direction several pages until I find that particular image, and then for whatever reason I look up the info on the image and the artist.

The way the galleries are set up today are not conducive to art. They are made for people with short attention spans whose peruse the news. I have never met a single artist with a short attention span in my life, at least when it comes to art. When I look at images, I LOOK at images. I study their composition, their color, their environment, the time of day, the setting, the objects, the light and dark of things, its gravitas or levity or the study it is making, and finally its beauty as an image.

It would take forever to scroll images to page 270. Please, at least for the sake of the galleries, either do away with that tedious Yahoo scrolling baloney or at least bring back page numbers at the top.

Thank you for your thoughts. I will bring this up. :)

KimberlyC - I hope you are successful.

Oh, and by the way - the front page of the Renderosity website where it tells us how wonderful things are now, and just above the login button, a preposition is missing. It says "We have thousands 3D model, etc" and should read "We have thousands of 3D models, etc" and so forth. Probably not a bad idea to correct that, since it is the first page many people will see.

Thank you rubel, the login page will be corrected.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend!

I'm a little frustrated by your reply, Kimberly. Several people have brought up the infinite scroll / no page number thing in the Forum many times since the switchover. They've even fixed it for us in our individual galleries, which was GREATLY appreciated!

Saying, _ Thank you for your thoughts. I will bring this up. :) _... makes it seem like this is (gosh!) the first time it's been mentioned!

I know you're working your butt off over there, but don't you have a checklist or something of issues that are already supposed to be in review?

And btw, what IS the status of getting rid of infinite scroll?

Oh ... and if we had that search function like we've been talking about in another thread, rubel could just do a search rather than try to find something by figuring out what page it might be on.

I really do know how busy you are, and I can't thank you enough for what's already been accomplished!

Still lots to do, though. Don't give up on us!!

Thanks,
Tara

auntietk - yes, I've used the Advance Search before, but I don't think it looks like that is coming back. I guess they have their reasons. It would be much preferred, but I'm not holding my breath. However, I usually remember where I see things (page-wise), and I also do searches that way. Also, I believe KimberlyC was referring to the suggestion that, if they keep that awful scrolling paradigm, perhaps they could at least think about a compromise by putting page numbers at the top. I doubt they will agree to do that, hence my wishing her success. By the way, I've quite enjoyed reading your nods and prods to the powers that be during this latest re-design. They seem to be listening to some of them.

Well, how DOES one scroll through a week's worth of gallery images now? There now appears to be a finite limit on the 'What's new' scrolling - after roughly 2 days' worth of images, it just stops; and I can't figure out how to get to older images, still in chronological sequence...

and yes, it appears to be a finite number - as new gallery images are posted, the ones at that cut-off threshold vanish.

If I miss viewing images for more than 2 days, there appears to be no way to see them (this appears to be a change implemented withn the past couple of days, as it didn't happen last weekend...)

Is there a workaround for this?

rubel ( ) posted Sat, 05 September 2015 at 5:54 AM

Colin - that is an astute observation. Once they reach their arbitrary limit, I guess they expect everyone thereafter to go to the artist's page. So, I suppose they believe that we write down every artist name and image title we come across early on. I certainly don't do that. It would take forever. I sort of remember the page it's on, and then find things that way, as I described above. And if the limit is as you say, then it means that if you don't come back to the new images for a week or two, you'd never have a clue what was there because they're gone. Yet another reason to re-introduce the page numbers.

Yes, vacation is an appropriate example of this effect - and I often used almost exactly that same method of finding my most recent place in the gallery after a prolonged absence, even taking a few days to catch up incrementally. But even more, sometimes because of work/life issues, I don't have the luxury of scrolling through the gallery every day. Not everyone's life is constructed around Renderosity (shocking as that revelation may be). Indeed, this week, I didn't have a chance to look at all, until last night. So, anything posted between Sunday night and half-past-Wednesday is irretrievably beyond my view - a 'Renderosity Event Horizon' as it were... and that's not fair to artists who might otherwise attract new viewers.

I can appreciate that the definition of 'New' art in the "What's New" setting is somewhat subjective - but there should still be a way to scroll through a complete archive, as was effectively the case up until this last revision/convulsion.

Renderosity loses a lot of its appeal as an artists' gallery if this isn't rectified.

I'd like to go directley to page 38 and 47 in the gallery and to page 29 and 63 in freestuff. How am I suppose to do that? Scrolling a whole day?

IceEmpress ( ) posted Wed, 09 September 2015 at 4:19 PM

The vendor page is still awful since it loads gradually and everyone's avatar is shown. Can we PLEASE have a page like Daz3D's where everything is loaded up at once, as pure text? This is still really bad fior vendors whose names do not start with numbers or the letter A. I prettymuch have to search for whichever vendor I want-- and I often can't remember all of the vendors that I like (I don't want to follow them-- too much clutter in my inbox)

page numbers -- in all sections of the site --

yes, and pretty please

How the heck can I go to page 10 and back to page 3 in the Gallery when there are NO PAGE NUMBERS. I have a lot more things to do than scrolling all day in the Gallery.

PLEASE do make this an urgend matter KimberlyC, so many want page numbers back.

auntietk ( ) posted Sun, 13 September 2015 at 11:41 AM

Still hoping for page numbers. Any movement on this issue in the past week?

I hate scrolling for 12 minutes to find something I saw a couple of days ago.

I hate scrolling. No one likes scrolling forever in a store. Scrolling is for tumblr.

Ditto Sabby on the scrolling.

The only thing worse is clicking through an infinite menu tree.

And has anybody noticed that the new PRIME sash color is remarkably close to the logo that is used for breast cancer survivors, or is it just me?

Yay, gallery changed to page system :)
