Subject: Invisibible geometry parts

Hello all,

I am working on a product with an object file which contains two layers ( an inner part and an outer part). In Poser Pro 2014 the outer part does not show up in the preview but it renders perfectly. Does anybody know why this happens and what I can do against it? This is really not very beautiful. Thanks for your help Irene

Maybe normals are reversed on the outer part.

euhh, what does this mean????? Sorry, but I don't know a lot in modeling.

Normals determine how light hits the surface of a polygon. If you modeled it as one piece and then split it, the outer geometry might have had the normals reversed. What program did you build the model in?

Ah, ok. I use Silo 2.2.

Try reversing the normals on the model in silo and see if that helps. There should be an option somewhere that allows you to reverse the normals, or set normals to face, or flip normals, something along those lines. I have silo but I never use it as it crashes constantly for me so I'm not sure of what its settings are.

You should be able to see the back face also of a mesh by (in Poser) going to Render Settings >> Preview, unclick "Remove Backfacing Polys'. Alternatively you can change this setting per object in the Parameter window, Properties tab. If the issue is that the normals are reversed, those polygons should now be visible. That information should help you decide what to do next.

If you need to use a single mesh which will also show the reverse side (common with Dynamic clothing), a tip is to test your FireFly materials with 'Normals Forward' turned on (in the root shader). Many materials will look better with this enabled when the back side is visible.

Thanks so much for your help. I will try all this and will see what happens. Irene

In Poser, you can also use the "Grouping tool", add the material zone to a group, and click Reverse Normals. Then simply save it out again as a new object with no welding or any of those little boxes marked in the Export dialog.

Have a creative day!
