Subject: So what are the main features/improvements of poser 11?

Winterclaw ( ) posted Fri, 04 December 2015 at 2:12 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 4:34 AM

I haven't been keeping up with Poser 11 at all. Now that I see that it is out, what are the main improvements of it this time and what are the special poser pro features? Also, why are they calling it poser pro 11 when the last version I have is PP 2014?

Also, how is the new figure that comes with it?

WARK!

Hi @Winterclaw- I'm going to move this to the "Poser" forum. Thanks for asking!

According to Poser's Product manager, it was two confusing to go with year numbers and version numbers and editions (like Game Developer). The decision was made to stick with version numbers. PP 2014 was the "Pro" version of Poser 10. The new version is 11 and is being offered in standard and Pro forms. The pro version contains most of the pipeline integration and content creation features. The comparison chart is here: http://my.smithmicro.com/poser-compare.html.

what are the main improvements of it this time

The single biggest thing is Physical Based Rendering (Superfly). There a lot of other smaller things: easy joint-center tracking in morphs (adaptive rigging), direct creation of inject files, control-handles (built-in support for "phantom bones"), Subdivision level morph targets, Autosave, etc. A fairly detailed list here: http://my.smithmicro.com/poser-whats-new.html

Thanks for letting me know and the link. From that new questions:

So how much faster is GPU rendering? Is it barely noticeable? If I turn on IDL with 3 bounces and SSS am I going to notice a difference?

The new rigging stuff sounds good, how much better is it going to make things look? Also when are we going to see characters that support it?

Pauline looks a little on the ugly side by default and everything looks like it was rendered in firefly with the most basic materials. Please tell me she's capable of better if I'm supposed to take her seriously.

Don't put PP12 in your sig. That is the next version. (Poser Pro 12) You have PP2012 (Poser Pro 2012)

GPU is only for SuperFly. In SuperFly you don't turn on IDL - it's always on. I can't use GPU because I have the wrong kind, but other people are saying things about it. Mostly it's faster but also more limited - for example, volume scatter only works in CPU. Sometimes it doesn't run at all because you don't have enough RAM in your graphics card. Sometimes it runs but slower because your CPU is a monster.

However - I like SuperFly so much I'm never using FireFly again. So - no brainer for me, GPU or not.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Go here for some SuperFly images I posted that I simply cannot match in FireFly.

Link - click me

Now - other people may show you renders and you think - meh - not a big deal. You would be right - meh. Most of what I see doesn't look like it's worth the trouble. This is because of operator error, not because the new tool is weak.

I haven't changed that signature in ages. Thanks for reminding me to update it.

Bill, why do you like SuperFly so much? Does it produce more realism? Is it easier to set things up? Both?

Both. Also the lighting really works. No Splotchies. Indoor situations are finally possible.
